Oakland Raiders to drop capacity at O.co Coliseum

elling tickets hasn't been easy for the Raiders since they moved back to Oakland in 1995. Now they're making a move to lessen the threat of television blackouts.

In what the organization is calling a "capacity adjustment," the Raiders are planning to block off 28 sections of the upper deck at O.co Coliseum, according to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. This will include sections 335 through 355, derisively known by locals as Mount Davis.

The Coliseum's capacity for Raiders games will drop from 64,200 to 53,200, making it the facility with the fewest seats in the NFL. Soldier Field in Chicago previously owned the smallest capacity title at 61,500.

"Our hope, our desire, is a new stadium at that site," RaidersCEO Amy Trask said. "This is the tool we're using this year to create that vibrant community of season-ticket holders."

That's a fancy way of saying the Raiders are sick of holding their breath week after week. The team already made a substantial effort to curb TV blackouts this past season by taking advantage of the NFL's new 85 percent threshold rule. That allowed theRaiders to televise all but one home game in 2012.

Of course, the Raiders' best solution for pumping life back into their stadium and fan base is to put a decent product on the field. Oakland hasn't qualified for the playoffs since the 2002 season. If you build a team, they will come.

ANOTHER OPTION

WIN!!  I truly believe folks that live close enough to attend games are tired of wasting their money on disappointed seasons.  I know for me, the thought of going out and buying more Raiders memorabilia, jerseys, hats, etc, has found themselves on the very very very back burner of my interest.

I have been a Raider fan for nearly 40 years, and one more losing season may just remove my young positive experiences with the Raiders of old.

CATCH A CLUE AMY.....  JUST WIN BABY!!!

All this means in closing Mount Davis is that the team is looking to make it's case for relocating to southern California once again .

That Mark able to show that the lower attendance numbers last year and the amount of games that were blacked out or nearly blacked out the economic stability is much greater in the LA market then in Oakland for the team is future .

Will suck for all of the Oakland area fans to see the team move on them twice now but for the LA Raider area fans should be much better for them to go to games and also able to draw in some free agents with the LA drawing power now over the Oakland/Bay area .

Weather a lot nicer then the Bay for much of the year , the fact that they can maybe parley their ambitions to get into the acting world is easier to for movies,TV, commercials and whatever else might be of interest for them in this area too .

Sucks that they couldn't find someone worthy enough to just give the seats to. They couldn't give 2 tickets to a random game to any teen in Oakland high schools with a 3.0 or higher GPA? Seems like a good way to get some positive publicity in your own neighborhood rather than let the seats go to waste.

Yeah this doesn't look like Mark will be looking to get some deal to have the AEG group buyout the smaller owners is share then that leaves him with the still controlling interest of the team .

But then again I could see him sell off a portion of his shares too to raise money to pay the tax upon Carol's death too . But is this going to be him giving the AEG or whoever the co-owner is a say in the day to day operations of the Raiders unlike it did with AL ?

But hey if they move to LA closer for you and Gal to attend some games again .

Plus you could be there for the Lane Kiffin lighting of the torch .229031_lol.gif

Re: Oakland Raiders to drop capacity at O.co Coliseum

Who knows what the reason really was for doing this, but regardless, it probably brings the capacity down closer to what it should have been realistically anyway all these years in a shared market. From the time the stadium opened in '66, throughout the glory years, until the move to LA, the stadium capacity was 54,000.

I'm all for the Raiders using Lance to light the Al Davis torch. Head first or feet first?
