The draft

The draft

cbs has us drafting Jarvos Jones ( olb ) from Ga. with the 3rd overall pick. Just wondering your thoughts on this kid because i have not seen him play but have heard nice things about him. If we are going lb I would rather have the kid from N.D. Also, if this is the end for Palmer ( because of salary reasons ) do you think we take a flyer on Matt Flynn being that Seattle will probably cut him and that there is real no sure fire #1 q.b in this years draft. Thoughts anyone?

Re: The draft

Jones is a BEAST but we have Burris and should resign Wheeler.

UNless they want Jones to be in a 3-4 OLB spot rushing the QB and put Burris in a 3-4 OLB spot with Wheeler and another LB in the middle?

Te'o or a CB would fill the biggest need and if they draft a CB they should trade down and get Johnathan Banks in the 12-18 range

Never argue with an idiot, people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Re: The draft

I like Jones but as stated unless we are going 3-4  we need a middle LB. damn looking at the Roster and who I think will be gone we will have a lot of holes to fill. It is easy to cut guys it is hard to fill the positions with a upgrade..

RE: The draft

Let me start off by saying I don't know anything about college prospects. I don't know who's the best out there.

However, I don't get the thinking that this kid is a beast but we should pass on him because we have two serviceable guys. Of the guys available at our draft position, if we think he has the best chance to be dominant, take him. This isn't Patrick Willis or a young Ray Lewis at LB, we're talking about a journeyman veteran and a 4th round rookie. Trying to fit holes with high picks instead of choosing clearly dominant players is how you end up taking Purple Drank over Megatron. The Colts didn't worry about who was their QB with the 1st pick last year, and now instead of having a HOF QB for two or three more years they may have one for the next fifteen.

A successful top 3 pick should be a perennial pro bowler and future HOFer. Just contributing in the league is not good enough to be drafted at #3. In fact, from the merger to 1990 every draft except three (1977, Tony Dorsett at #2 is the only HOFer, 1984 and 1986 had no HOFers) had a HOF player available at #3. Since 1991, available players have been guys like Brett Favre, Ray Lewis, Tony Gonzalez, LaDainian Tomlinson, Champ Bailey, Ed Reed, 5-10 pro bowl appearances and decent HOF chances once they are eligible. If you see a guy with that potential, are you really going to pass him up because you already have Miles Burris? If Manti Teo looks like that type of player, get him. If Jones does, get him. If it's Lotulelei or Geno Smith or Johnathan Banks or even a punter, get him. If you can trade down and get more picks then great, but don't pass up on a guy you think is going to be a stud. At this point we just need talent, who cares where it is on the field.

As for Flynn, if he gets cut and we have a chance to sign him without breaking the bank, do it even if you have to slightly overpay. We know he is a capable backup, which is more than we can say about Leinart. That would also give us two potential future starting QB as well. I would imagine he goes to Arizona, Jacksonville, KC, or some other place where he has a better chance of starting though. If they don't want him, maybe he goes to a contender as a backup. I don't see him coming to a bad team with an entrenched starter unless that's his only option or the money is way different.
