Interesting Players Cut by Other Teams Thread

Here's a guy I hope Idzik is all over:

Seahawks waived DE/OLB Jackson Jeffcoat.

Seattle gave Jeffcoat a relatively pricey UDFA signing bonus ($15,000), but quickly found out why he went undrafted despite winning 2013 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Jeffcoat is a good enough athlete to get another shot.

Seahawks released CB Terrell Thomas.

He got beaten out by Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon.

Definately bring him in for a look.He really couldn't stay healthy with the Giants but was a good cover corner when healthy.

RUMOR:

ESPN Boston does not have Stevan Ridley making the 53-man roster in their latest projection.

We'd be stunned if Ridley gets cut, as he's clearly the team's best inside running option provided he doesn't fumble. But the projection comes from ace beat man Mike Reiss, who is not prone to hyperbole. Ridley played just 11 snaps in Friday night's third preseason game, and did lose a fumble in the second preseason game. Reiss has the Patriots keeping four running backs on the active roster (Shane Vereen, James White, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray) and one on the practice squad (Roy Finch).

I'd take him over Green or Richardson.

RUMOR:

ESPN Bengals reporter Coley Harvey does not have BenJarvus Green-Ellis on his latest 53-man roster projection.

Green-Ellis sat out Sunday night's preseason game due to a hip injury of unknown severity. And with Rex Burkhead's knee injury not as severe as initially feared, BJGE is squarely on the bubble heading into the final preseason week. Final cuts are due Saturday. If Green-Ellis does end up waived, it's a boon to the stock of Jeremy Hill.

DUMMY:

Ravens waived RB Cierre Wood.

Wood was a priority UDFA add after the 2013 draft by the Texans and won their No. 3 RB job. But he got busted for allegedly smoking pot in the team hotel room on a road trip and was waived. Now Wood loses out to Justin Forsett and Lorenzo Taliaferro for a roster spot in Baltimore.

if he were to get cut, i'd have to think he'd have a lot of better opportunities than being the 4th man on the jets RB totem poll.

I would agree.  However, I would think when your RB depth chart is the following: Shane Vereen, James White, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray...he's better than the 4-5th best RB on that list as well...apparently not.

I agree with you.  of course, this is all based on Mike Reiss' roster predictions.  while Reiss is tapped into the Pats (as best is possible for a reporter covering the Pats), he has no idea what Belichick is thinking.  i give it more credence than if Cimini made some crazy roster prediction for the Jets, but until it actually happens, I'm skeptical.

Re: Interesting Players Cut by Other Teams Thread

The Browns' roster moves will be interesting to watch come this weekend. Due to the inescapable similarities between Pettine's scheme and the Jets, a DB coming from their camp might face a flatter learning curve with the Jets. A guy to keep an eye on is Leon McFadden, who was drafted in the 3rd round in 2013 to become the starting CB opposite Haden, but injuries and circumstances intervened and Cleveland drafted both Justin Gilbert and Pierre Desir in 2014, plus have former Jets Aaron Berry and Isiah Trufant likely to make the final 53. McFadden is likely to be one of the odd men out, and might be better than some of the guys we've got.

But he was going to seamlessly replace Brady and bring another 15 years of stability and championships to Foxboro.

I had opined that Mallett would have developed to be good enough to be another Matt Flynn.
Apparently his ceiling is a lot lower than I suspected and a LOT lower than Mike Mayock's opinion of him back when training camp started.

And just think, only a few weeks ago the Pats wanted a 1 or 2 pick for him!   hahahaha!!!

Report: Saints set to release linebacker Victor Butler

Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 25, 2014, 10:33 PM EDT
Victor ButlerAP

The New Orleans Saints signed linebacker Victor Butler a season ago with the hope he could become a significant contributor to their defense.

Ultimately, he may never play a down for the team.

According to Kristian Garic of 870 WWL in New Orleans, the Saints are planning to release Butler as a part of their cuts to get down to 75 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Butler suffered a torn ACL after colliding with running backMark Ingram in practice in June 2013. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list with the hope his knee may somehow be able to recover in time for him to play down the stretch. That hope never materialized and Butler spent the entire season on the physically unable to perform list.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Butler returned to practice Monday after missing a significant amount of training camp with another issue, though this one was undisclosed by the Saints. The move to release Butler will save the Saints $1.5 million this season.

Butler’s last game action came with the Dallas Cowboys in 2012, where he appeared in all 16 games and recorded 25 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.
