6th WR?

I know a lot of people thing we'll carry 7 WRs. It's possible, but let's assume the Jets will carry 6? Which of the following combos is the most likely group?

Most likely Jets WR corps to start season is....

  1. Poll closed on 08/13/2014
  2. Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Salas, Saunders: 11 votes
  3. Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Saunders, Ford: 3 votes
  4. Decker, Kerley, Hill, Salas, Saunders, Ford: 0 votes
  5. Decker, Kerley, Nelson, Salas, Ford, Saunders: 0 votes
  6. Decker, Kerley, Hill, Nelson, Saunders, Gates: 0 votes
  7. Decker, Kerley, Hill, Salas, Saunders, Gates: 0 votes
  8. Decker, Kerley, Nelson, Salas, Saunders, (New Player): 0 votes

Re: 6th WR?

Obviously voted on #1 because I think Saunders has been more involved in the passing game than Ford so far.  However, I could easily see scenario 2 happening as well, I just think scenario 1 is more likely.

Re: 6th WR?

I'm sorry, but I can't get excited about Clyde Gates making the team. He's like Clowney was a few years ago, All-Pro in shorts & training camp, then he fades away once the season starts.

Now with Evans going to Injured Reserve, I think it opens up a slot for Salas. Here are my WR choices:

1) Decker
2) Hill
3) Kerley
4) Nelson
5) Saunders
6) Salas
7) Ford is on the fence.

Go Jets...Cyborg

Agree totally on "please don't hit me Gates." Evans was having a poor camp so I say send him to IR and give him a year to develop...

Re: 6th WR?

It looks like people think Ford will be the odd man out or that people think we'll carry 7 WRS

Should be fun to watch

The fly in the ointment could be my boy Saalim Hakim who I think will turn some heads this preseason

Remember that Chris Johnson is also a historical 40-60 catch per season guy.

not sure they will let a rookie handle both PR and KR......and I don't want Milliner doing any of it. Ford's survival has to be tied to special teams.

Re: 6th WR?

I went with the first group but think Fordwill make roster if he shows something on KR. I think we keep 6 for sure and I'd rather have Ford or Salas or the rookie as a seventh guy than have Simms or Boyd on the final 53.

Eventually it is going to set in for people how meaningless the backup and backup to backup WRs are on the #Jets roster this year

Three TEs who are going to be used as WRs, a RB or two who is going to be used as one. There will be about 3 targets per game to go around..

...for WRs not named Decker and Kerley

So ultimately all the time spent debating Salas, Saunders, Ford, Hill etc is debate around bit players in the NYJ 2014 offense

Re: 6th WR?

I went with the second option, mainly because I think Ford will beat out Salas for a spot because of his return ability. Evans likely gets dumped on IR for the season (which might save him from being either cut or picked up by someone else off practice squad).

Re: 6th WR?

so for argument sake lets say the team does keep 6wrs on the 53 - and again for argument sake lets say the top 3 are: Decker, Hill and Kerley AND lets also say the 4th wr on the roster ends up being Nelson - AND the punt returner is Saunders and the KO returner is Ford - following this line of thinking - then - 6 wr are going to dress on the gameday 46 - with Ford and Saunders relegated to very limited special teams duties and in essence(absent rash of in game injuries)virtually no game wr duties

all of which makes for VERY fuzzy 53 roster and gameday 46 - math.....imo - only way Ford makes the team is as the the 4th wideout - also relative to Ford - KO returning value continues to diminish league wide  - as an increasing percentage of them are touchbacks

lastly - any thought of the team carrying 7 wrs on the 53 - does NOT add up

Re: 6th WR?

Good point on Ford as it relates to him making the roster based on his return value. If Salas continues to perform as a receiver, and Ford is catching touchbacks, he may not make the team. After the top 4 on the depth chart and Saunders, it will come down to Salas/Ford/Gates.

Re: 6th WR?

Hey Joe - maybe you haven't watched the Jets the last two years, but David Nelson went from Jags cut to Jets starter. We've started Geeg Salas, Michael Campbell, and Clyde Gates.

Explain to me how Campbell, Gates, and Salas can go directly from PS to starter and why Jets fans shouldn't be paying attention to the 4-7 WRs again? Oh, because Hill is a sure handed WR with little to no injury history and David Nelson couldn't pass a physical to stay on a roster till he made our roster...nope, don't worry about those 4-7 WRs.

I'm reminded of the tortoise and the hare.
All eyes are focused on the expected winners, the hares, while the tortoise slowing plods his way to the finish line, crawls UNDER the ribbon, and chomps down on a piece of old lettuce after the ordeal.

Re: 6th WR?

Why the Wr's after Decker and Kerley aren't really going to matter much.

One of my favorite formations from last night was when the #Jets brought out Sudfeld, Amaro, Cumberland and a WR w/ Sudfeld split wide.

#Jets showed plenty of looks last night that utilized Amaro, Sudfeld, Cumberland and CJ at receiver
