Supplimental Draft - Jets showing interest?

Supplimental Draft - Jets showing interest?

LaKendrick Ross is a small school defensive tackle prospect from Virginia University of Lynchburg, who – having been declared academically ineligible last season – is now entering this month’s supplemental draft. According to TheJetsBlog’s Jake Steinberg, the Jets may be interested in him.

Ross caused a stir recently when he ran a sub-5.0 forty at 365 pounds and did an astonishing 47 bench reps at a private workout. Jake has also profiled Ross for Vice Sports, where he reports that Ross’ agents have fielded over 80 calls from 28 NFL teams since that workout.

For the past several years, NFL.com's Henry Hodgson has been the go-to voice for the supplemental draft.
In the Mock 2014 supplemental draft, Hodgson has the Jets taking the first selection of a player, spending a 6th rounder on Ross at #175.
The pick would cost the Jets their 6th round pick in the 2015 regular NFL draft next April/May.

Don't bother looking for video highlights, his best highlight is from his 2011 senior year at I.C. Norcom in Portsmouth, VA - where he looks like an extra out of a Conan the Barbarian movie.
This isn't yer typical Big Fugly DL player, his I. C. Norcom video shows him as chiseled as a Mr. Olympia contestant.
He already had an NFL body in high school.

PHOTO - not particularly enamored with a kid stupidly flashing gang sign and thinking that's something kewl to be doing when you hope to make the NFL, nor the fact that he was held academically ineligible at Lynchburg last season - but kay-REIST, what a MONSTER this kid is! eek.

He would make for an embarrassment of riches along the defensive front. Although I guess we could trade KEllis for a pick. The only question I would have aside from the grades and gang sign(which admittedly I know nothing about,)does Rex have a 6 man front scheme in his playbook?

well douzable is on a 1-year contract and ellis is a free agent after this year.  so if they really like him and can get him for a late pick (say a 6th), it could make a lot of sense.

Is he trying out for the NFL or his place on Olympus?

6'-4"/366# at his Pro Day workout, which is a teeny bit on the tall side for a NT/interior DL, in HYATT™'s opinion, but the strength and reach, (video shows he's got decent arm length), is unquestionably there.
Quickness & acceleration too, as evidenced by that sub-5 second time.

1.81 unofficial 10 yard split
SUH & Raji both did a 1.69 at the Combines
Kris Jenkins did a 1.75 back in '01
Geno Atkins ran it in 1.68
Henry Melton did a 1.58 on Pro Day
Haloti Ngata hit 1.73
1.81 isn't a good number, but it's unofficial, hand-timed, and it's likely Ross hasn't had any of the professional preparation for his Pro Day that most draft prospects all get well in advance of March Combines testing.
Shaving off 1/10th of a second is pretty easy with the proper pre-training for most college prospects, which hints at Ross having approximately a 1.71s time in the 10 yard split, if he was being tested on an equal footing with other top NT prospects.
It does bear watching however.

Wing span of 83.5 inches - arms of a 6'-11" man, which probably puts his arm length around 34.5" & just 1/2" less wingspan than Julius Peppers' 84".
J.J. Watt's wingspan is 82.5"
Jadeveon Clowney, this year's top DL draft pick, stretched in at 83"
We all know Peppers is a bit of a freak with those long, rangy arms but he's also 2" taller than Ross, at 6'-6".

Cy would be happy, because Snacks/Ellis/Ross means the Jets have the goods to run multiple 4-3 fronts without resorting to offsets, &/or using Coples as a DE &/or rotating Richardson and Wilkerson throughout the mix.
OR
It'll help the LB corps out too, which is something of a weakness for the Jets, by reducing the need for 4 of them all-game.

What does an opposing OL do when faced with this 8 man box?
Order coffins for their QBs, RBs, & OL after they scrape them off the DL's cleats?
It's like like lining up across from a stampeding herd of buffalo. tongue

Wilkerson_______Snacks______Ross _____Ellis_________Richardson

______Davis/Pace______Harris (2)____Harris (1)____Coples/Pace

Dowling___________________Wilson/Landry___________ _______ ___________Milliner

Re: Supplimental Draft - Jets showing interest?

Before we nominate Ross for Canton, let's remember a few things:

1) There is a reason he's @ Lynchburg College ? My Daughter graduated from there, and it's a tiny College with a small time football program.
2) There are hundreds of huge strong athletes out there, that can't translate to a big time College program & the NFL.
3) I'm no longer tooting my own horn about running a 4-3, because we actually played more of a 4 man front last year, than a true 3-4.

Re: Supplimental Draft - Jets showing interest?

Sounds like a player with fantastic athletic gifts, but seems to have very little football experience. Worth an invite to camp without a doubt but I'm not sure about giving up a pick.

I can't remember the name of the player, but a number of years back a DT with similar measurables entered the draft and I remember some fans hoping the Jets would draft him, enamored with his measurables but had little football experience. That DT as far as I remember ended up joining the Saints and lasted about 15 minutes into training camp(might have even been minicamp) and I don't think played in the NFL after that.

Not saying its the same situation, but measurables aren't everything. Being an NFL caliber NT is an incredible demand on the body and not many can handle it.

Mostly I think HYATT™ is longing for the next Kris Jenkins or Gravedigger Brown.
There's a certain fascination in watching big men dance with power and agility.

No players were selected in todays Supplement Draft, by any team. I guess Josh Gordon (last player picked) scared every team away !noidea

Ross might be worth a UDFA signing. Just because he came from Lynchburg doesn't mean he doesn't have potential.

He'll sign somewhere, we have the cap space to pay him a little more than some other teams if we think he can play

True. I was unfortunately very high on Terrence Cody a few years back. We all have our hits and misses.

Man I wanted that bama bust Cody too, now I'll never want a Bama defensive player again after Cody, Upshaw, Kirkpatrick, McLain, Kareem Jackson, the list goes on and on.  Mark Barron and Milliner are two of teh few who made any impact recently in the NFL.  But Cody was the beginning of showing teams Bama defensive players are = to USC offensive players when it comes to the NFL draft.

Yeah, missed the boat on that one. He's a serviceable NFL player for the Ravens, but not meritous of his pick. I'll take Snacks over him any day.

Thinking back to that draft and where we were picking,, I really liked Jared Odrick, Nate Allen in rd 1... Jason Worlids, Jarron Gilbert and Eric Decker in rd2..   God I loved Navarro Bowman and every expert thought that he was too small....

Serviceable? In 56 games played he has 85 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 FF, 2 pass defensed, and 0 INTs.  He's the definition of a jag (just another guy). He makes TJ Barnes look like Ngata. crazy We can only hope. devil
