Jets Offered More Money Than Seattle To Get Sidney RIce

Jets Offered More Money Than Seattle To Get Sidney RIce

Apparently the Jets offered Sidney Rice more money than the Jets but he declined for less money to stay in Seattle. What do all the " Off with Idzik's head," crowd have to say about that......? Idzik is really trying to build a competitive team while keeping the future in mind and as the priority. I just really cant understand why some just cant see what this guy is doing and want to go back to the SOJ way of doing things. I know he does have enough of a track record yet but the guy is brilliant in his approach and methodology. What do you guys think?

I don't think there is one person here who feels that harshly about Idzik. Most are very happy with him and some may disagree with a move or two he's made or not made. Bet if you polled everyone I'd be surprised if ANYONE wants him gone.

Noone NOONE wants Idzik gone...if they do..they dont know football

Rice probably stayed in Seattle because it was a one year deal on both sides..why would he uproot himself and family for one year unless the money was that different

I agree! Idzik has a plan and is sticking to it. He will not overpay for a FA (as our last GM did). he seems to know talent (as our last GM didn't) and he is not throwing away money on average players or troublemakers (as our last GM did with Sanchez, Holmes, Hunter). I also believe most on this board are happy with him.

It blasts the theory out of the water that Idzik is cheap and doesn't use FA enough.

As GM, he has a short list of players he's willing to spend money on. And in some cases, big money on. He's not sitting back in his office burning up the phone lines trying to sign every above average FA that becomes available. That would be reckless, shortsighted, and a path to hell for the Jets cap-wise.

It's just some fans want that Tannenbaum'esqe GM.  Where they rule the off-season headlines and appease the masses. Yet, those GM's have no clue how to build a team, create continuity and build a team first locker room.

By all accounts many thought Idzik should have over spent or traded picks away for certain players that were either locker room headaches or one year wonders.
Hysterical, aint it banghead

As far as paying more money, the cost of living and taxes in NJ are much higher than most other states(not to mention moving expenses). So paying more than other teams is not really a negative thing or should be taken as a reflection of our team.

I don't even see why Idzik offered more money for Rice then Seattle, for what?  That right there upsets and disappoints me!!!  I'm glad we didn't sign Sidney Rice, he sucks!!!  He plays soft mentally and physically and way below his potential which is a recipe for disaster.  Plus he is past his prime and he may not have ever even played in his prime.  I'm glad he signed with whomever and very disappointed that Idzik would offer Sidney anything more then a 1-2 year minimum contract.

Agreed.  The cost of living is higher to live in the NYC area than...anywhere else.  The NYC teams are always at a disadvantage from that standpoint (plus NY taxes).  You can live in tax free states, and the cost of living has got to be 1/5th what is costs to live in NYC in almost every other NFL city.  The Jets contracts always better be a little higher, or it doesn't make financial sense to come here.

So, in other words, players like Coleman and Rice have turned down higher offers from the Jets, and have chosen other teams that they feel are better fits for them?

So it wasn't a simple matter of Idzik being cheap and letting players get away?

I'm giving Idzik some time before I anoint him or destroy him. I think it's too early in his tenure. Some things make me think he could be a very good GM and I also think he may be an idiot. This is a huge draft for him, so let's see what he's able to do. We have some glaring holes to fill and I do not want to be going into this season w/ a bunch of those holes unfilled. He has a lot of draft picks to either take quality players or move around on the draft board and make some good picks.

Guy's, there are 31 other teams competing for the same free agents. Every time a free agents name pops up, within hours someone on this board is posting how bad we need that player. We can't get every player on our wish list. Honestly if I was Sydney Rice, I would not want to leave Russell Wilson QB and the Super Bowl Champions either. Stop crying about spilled milk ! You win some and lose some. Give Idzik some credit, he signed the best free agent WR in Decker, the best RB in Chris Johnson, & the best QB free agent in Michael Vick.

In Idzik I trust.

Exactly. This isn't fantasy football. There are a myriad of reasons why players sign with the teams they do. It's not just about money.

Re: Jets Offered More Money Than Seattle To Get Sidney RIce

I wish we locked him up, but bar none, the most exciting things about Idzik & Co. going after a long striding speedster who takes the top off a defense is that it shows that Idzik sees the need for such a player.

We have a good/could become great slot in Kerley
We have a Big Target, gotta get yards border line #1 target in Decker
We have a hole in the speedster category that rounds out the unit

It definitely gives fans insights as to where the braintrust's minds are in terms of building a team w/o said holes.

The best 2 year WR option out there, was Steve Smith from the Panthers, who has signed with the Ravens. He is a stud !

Don't know who this is directed at, but if it's me, I'm saying Sydney Rice and Kurt Coleman weren't coming to the Jets regardless of what they were paying. Coleman felt great about his Vikings visit, and Rice obviously loved Seattle, and probably playing with Russell Wilson. They took less money.

It sheds light on what actually happened, instead of what fans wanna believe happened. (Idzik's cheap, incompetent, let's FA's walk without a decent contract offer, ect).
