Re: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

Unless there is a miraculous turnaround I don't see him returning. The team has regressed over the last few weeks and today seemed to mail it in in the 4th quarter.

I have always been a Rex fan but he still struggles making in game changes when something isn't working. He is very stubborn and won't scheme to cover up the fact that he doesn't have man cover corners.

Loyalty is good in football but Rex takes it too far and it has cost him. Ed Reed shouldn't be playing anymore and he stuck with Sanchez, Scott, and a number of others in the past.

Re: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

Rex has flaws, who doesn't. I would still rather see him on sidelines than someone like Mangini. Looking at him was depressing.

Only thing I would say in Rex's defense is that he is cooking with ingredients he was given.

I don't see YET team falling apart or secret insider sources backbiting and I don't see players who are not trying. I see everyone trying, but lack of talent causing the team to fall on its face.

Also, I would say that there is NOTHING Rex can do about HIS 3 OF HIS HIGHEST PAID AND BEST PLAYERS not coming through for him - Cro, Holmes and Brick. These guys are paid like pro-bowlers and in the past played like pro-bowlers, but all of a sudden you stop contributing and start hurting the team, there is NO COACH IN THE WORLD that can do anything about it.

Furthermore, Rex always is encouraging to his players and that is why they love him. However, you put a GIANT HOLE in the defense in terms of Milliner where every team is game planning, to either go deep or take 5 easy yards, it makes life impossible.

I am one of the people complaining about not adjusting schemes to help crap CB play, but really, it is not like we have pro-bowl safeties.

Only thing we can do is play NICKLE all the time. Then at some point team would start running on us and that would be the end of that.

Re: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

50 / 50% Rex makes it. Depends on the last 4 games.I've come to the conclusion that Rex is dumb as a rock !

I wonder if Urban Meyer / Ohio State would be interested in a NFL gig. He and Nick Saban are the two best College coaches; however, Saban has been there and done that with the Flippers. Meyer's is only 49 and he's a football genius. He loves both offense & defense and is respected by his players.

Replacing Rex means more than just replacing the HC. You're basically starting over, often times with a new philosophy, new players, and the dreaded "re-building".

I like keeping continuity, but I just don't see this team going the right direction. It seems like there's not enough accountability, and an unwillingness to deviate from what's not working. And let's be honest: this team is lacking skill players on offense. On the other side, Dee Milliner has been shockingly bad. What a huge disappointment.

Idzik will find his guy this off season. And with that, comes a few painful years of mediocrity to get enough quality players in here to make it work.

RE: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

We have to remember that the Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is one of the hot coaching names out there right now and he might be an attractive option for Idzik who as we know came from Seatle. So, having that viable option might make a change more likely

Re: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

The Jets need a true HC, not a defensive coordinator or offensive coordinator playing head coach.  Rex only cares about the D, so go back to being a defensive coordinator then.  The HC needs to have all vested interested in all aspects of the team and Rex just isn't there.  He gots to go and takes Sanchez and Holmes with you Rex!!!!

I would say this: while I've been a Rex supporter, he's never had a decent offense in his 5 years. At some point you can't keep blaming the coordinators.
And his defenses have gotten worse every year.

In last 5 years, we literally have had 3 complete BLANKS in draft and this year, if not for Sheldon Richardson, we might have been staring at another BLANK.

I define BLANKS by either players not being on the roster (which is true for year of Sanchez and year before that) or players being on the roster and NOT being asked to contribute....

From year of Kyle Wilson, he is the only one who allowed to step on the field once in a while.

There is absolutely nothing Rex or anyone do anything about it.

We only hear rumors.....WE DO NOT KNOW how many of the picks Rex had direct influence in, and how much is on him. I know after we draft a player, Rex always tries to sound enthusiastic about them and pumps them up....but that is just Rex being Rex.....

So sure, he has influence in draft.....but as a TEAM we are failing to make good choices....

HERE IS A COMPLETELY RETARDED IDEA AND I HOPE SOMEONE FROM JETS' FO READS IT

Cross check your big-board with SI.COM's list.....if delta is too big, cross of their names....I am telling you, those guys are lucky or whatever, but the way they list player per position, most teams take them in that order.....teams that reach, are the ones who have sucky drafts and continue to suck.

Re: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

Hard to know what management is thinking. I thought Rex should have been fired last year. That was based on how the team had regressed from year to year, how badly the drafts had gone, Rex's constant clock mismanagement and foot in mouth disease, and the undisciplined nature of his team. So as I say I was against him coming back this year. Now accepting that he did come back, and giving him a sort of clean slate in my mind only, I come up with the following:

IMO, Rex was less the impetus for the moves this year than in year's past, so really cannot be blamed for the poor talent on offense, that's Idzik's problem;
With Morningweg (sp) taking more of the offense Rex has spent more time working on the defense, and the defense has been very good;
Way less clock mismanagement;
Rex not boasting like a fool;

With all that, I'm more willing to bring him back this year than I was last year! Weird I know, but this team has got to get some offensive talent. They have none.

RE: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

what buoyed Rex's chances early is what is sinking him now........his defense. We were all fired up about the front 7 and the world of possibilities. Now when you look at the secondary you see a complete mess. Ultimately you have to come back to that preseason decision to play Sanchez in mop up duty. He'd look pretty good right now.

While I have liked Rex and supported him being retained....I have all along stated it will come down to the temperature of the team at the end. A bad finish will flush him.

you contradict yourself here.

They aren't his ingredients, but you don't think he picked Milliner and Wilson or pushed hard for them?

You don't think landry and reed are his picks to play safety?

The secondary is 100% made up of Rex Ryan players.

The defense gave up 19 and 23 points the last 2 weeks, that's not 1/2 bad. This in spite of constantly being hung out to dry by the offense. Even though we didn't play GREAT on defense against Miami, we certainly played well enough to win

While the defense only gave up less than 24 points the last two weeks and probably played well enough to win they are also the side of the ball that are littered with former number one and two picks and a head coach that devotes most/all of his time game planning.  They play well at times but also give up way to much based the focus and devotion this organization has given to it.

Things are just going bad and everything is under a microscope. At some point you need to find the most common denominator for the troubles this team has had. At this time it points to Rex. Not doubt Tanny deserves a lot of the blame and first year GM Idzik has had an inauspicious start to his tenure. While there are no guarantees with a future head coach unfortunately that's the way of the NFL. Rex will most likely be fired after this year.

Well, unless Idzik is going to be able to talk him into staying here as a DC, you can Rex you need a DC AND a HC.   I don't think they are going to be too quick to fire Rex, but we'll see.

WHY WE WILL LOSE REX

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/

Ryan, loyal to a fault, believes Reed can do no wrong, quickly dismissing the notion of cutting the safety's playing time.

"He's going to be starting unless he's injured," said Ryan, who coached Reed during their years together in Baltimore. "I think Ed gives us the best shot."

Reed, 35, looked old and slow on the Hartline play. Then again, he is old and slow.

"If you look at it from a statistical standpoint, I can understand the question," Ryan said. "We all saw him miss the tackle on Hartline's touchdown. But Ed did his jobbanghead, I don't think there's any doubt."

Does that mean Tannehill would've thrown for 400 yards instead of 331 if it weren't for Reed patrolling the deep middle?

Ed is not a CB and as such cannot provide man coverage if the CBs blow it badly enough. Right now there is too much ground for him to cover.

RE: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

We need some long term stability on the team. Going from Herm Edwards to Mangini and now Rex in the last 10 years is not good.

We've had Pete Carroll (Seahawks) for one year before we ran him off, and look @ what a great coach he's turned into. We had Bill Belichick for 24 hours and let him slide to a contender.

I honestly think the best coach out there right now is Urban Meyer from Ohio State. He has turned 3 average programs around to winning programs. He is only 49 with un-limited potential.

If I was Idzik, I would ask Woody for a blank check and make Urban Meyer one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL, thats the only way he would come to a troubled NY Jet team.

Stop the bleeding Woody and hire the best.noidea

RE: Likelihood Rex will return in 2014?

I have been a Rex supporter since he has been here but listening to his Monday Presser convinced me he needs to go.  All of you should listen to it ... #1) he sounds defeated, 2) he makes no sense and contradicts  himself regarding benching's and decision making; 3) he simply has no answer.

Like Rex why is your OL having problems now? Well there are a lot of contributing factors...like what - oh 8 man fronts, not asked but should have been - was how come your not making in game adjustments by MAX protection or what about the missed assignments Rex or poor play by RG.... Why not try someone else and bench people - send a F message.

His explanations: on Geno sounded an awful lot like the comments he made last year for Mark, i.e., well he gives us the best chance to win!  Say what?  When ask why he shouldn't sit he said he needed to play to get better... sigh, maybe my eyesight is failing but WT* did he see on the tape that we didn't see on Sunday? Then he has the gall to say neither QB played well... well Rex what about the other QB that has been inactive...  yet he goes with someone that is totally lost.

AS for Reed when a questioner asked about the play of Allen vs Reed, Rex dismissed it by saying Reed would start. And that the there were different D schemes... again a non answer and just sounded foolish.  Loyalty is one thing but when it is detrimental to the team then that is a bad decision and I say Mr. I should step in and tell him to make the change.  What I see now is he is letting Rex hang himself with his questionable decisions.

When asked about benching players not performing his answer was boarder line gibberish and sounded clueless.

I don't know what will happen here but like Geno I have no faith in his ability to lead this team esp. watching him today.  If this is what he shows the team then look no further for why the team has played so chitty the last three weeks... Maybe just maybe he has lost this team and he knows it... the message just isn't getting through anymore.

I say enough already.  Oh and one more thing, as a JET FAN I thought this presser was an embarrassment to the organization and to us.
