Mo Wilkerson......

"After Joe Klecko, Mo Wilkerson is the best all around defensive lineman to ever play for the New York Jets"

What is your response to that statement?

  2. Strongly Agree: 1 vote
  3. Agree: 9 votes

RE: Mo Wilkerson......

1. Way too early
2. Gastineau probably is 1A with Klecko, but he was just a moron so he gets downgraded on personality. Easily #2
3. Shaun Ellis was pretty good.
4. I'm sure old timers will say Philbin. Before my time.

Disagree now. Hope its very academic that he is best Jets DL ever 10 years from now.

RE: Mo Wilkerson......

DE's -
Klecko - Pure strength and sneaky fast.
Gastineau - Relentless pass rusher, could not be blocked.
Wilkerson - We need to lock him up financially now, because he's going to be big time !
Shaun Ellis - When he was'nt stoned, he was great !pimp.gif
Philbin - He would not make our current team because of his size today; however, he gave 110% effort on every play.

NT's-
Jenkins - Best NT we have ever had. Klecko was also All-Pro DT.
Harrison - Big Snacks, can bring it for a big guy. Very fast and strong.
Ellis - He's got back problems, and stands straight up on the snap. He was our # 1 NT but Snacks beat him out in practice.

Go Jets...Cyborg

IMHO.....the real reason Mark Gastineau was as good as he was is because during his best seasons he played next to Joe Klecko.  the best "D" lineman the Jets ever had.

Given time, he may be. As stated above, way too early.

RE: Mo Wilkerson......

Hard to put Mo ahead of Gastineau. His ability to get to the QB was special but he get beat a lot of run plays to his side. Especially by the Dolphins.  I was always a big Gerry Philbin fan. Too small now but in his era he was very good.

Wilkerson is in that company and has the potential but just too early ...

the 'true' Sack Exchange days had Gastineau and Klecko on the ends.....with Lyons and Salaam in the middle.  That was the most prolific lineup for any one season.  Where Gastineau benefitted most was he got to face the weaker side OT  and he could usually dominate on speed around the corner.  As pointed out by another poster, smart teams ran at Gastineau....he usually took himself out of the play.

Re: Mo Wilkerson......

Very well could be someday, but WAY too early to tell right now. As others have said, he has to clearly outpace the likes of Mark Gastineau and Shaun Ellis before that can happen. No small order....

Agree 100%. Klecko played both the run and russed the passer.

Gastineau was a one dimensional player (albeit great at that).
His speed rush was almost always an outside rush and teams took
advantage of that by running inside of his rush.

Need to be careful about building this guy up like they did with Revis.  You saw how that worked out.

I's like to retract that last NT post. Kenrick Ellis has show signs of greatness, for about 2 plays a game, if he's playing ? Pouha deserves to be my 3rd best NT not Ellis.

Plus Verlon Biggs DE is right up there with Philbin.

Go Jets...Cyborg

That and he was always all coked up, like L.T.
Drugs can make you powerful crazy good when you can't feel the fatigue during games.
Coca does that. South American natives chewed the leaves for centuries to combat short rations, altitude sickness, and fatigue.

Re: Mo Wilkerson......

I look at Wilkerson and see a lineman that's off to a good start in his career and could end up being a 10-year starter for us but isn't the dominating presence most keep making him out to appear as. Multiple sacks and/or tackles against teams like the Jaguars or Bucs are nice, but I want to see this more against the who's who of the NFL. From October to the bye, we'll be playing some tough teams, four of which will feature a top 10 QB. I'll be on the lookout to see how he does and before any of you who already believe he's exceeded expectations, and is deserving of a huge extension in the offseason, comment on what I said, please do the same, to see if there's at least some truth to it. Honestly, I've been more impressed with Snacks and Richardson's play than any of our other linemen this year. That said, no, he is not the best since Klecko, although I've never seen him play. I've seen Ellis play and I thought his overall game (in his third year) was better than Wilkerson and he's easily the best I've seen in all my years rooting for this program, 13.

Agreed. I remember Gastineau being not-so-hot against the run. He was, comparedto Wilkerson right now, a better pass rusher than Wilkerson. Salaam was underrated and the guy everyone always forgets. Lyons and Klecko were very solid players.

DanFran - to say Klecko was a very solid player is like saying Michael Jordan
was a decent basketball player. I think it's a travesty that Klecko isn't a hall of
famer, and while they both were great in their own way, I would take Klecko
on my D-Line over Gastineau any day.

Also, responding to the thread in general I loved Shaun Ellis,  but from what
I've seen so far of Mo, I think he's already better. He really brings it on every
play, and if I were an O-lineman, I'd be more worried about blocking Mo than
Shaun. But both of them were really good agains the run and pass.
