2013 Draft Results

Overall Football Traits

Production12009: (12/12) ROT                                              2010: (12/12) ROT 2011: (12/12) ROG                                             2012: (14/14) LOT
Height-Weight-Speed3Possesses adequate height but arms are on the shorter side (32).
Durability3Four-year starter and 50 career starts is a school record but shoulder problems could be an issue. Underwent surgery on left shoulder following 2011 season and unable to participate in most of 2012 spring practices. Reportedly injured the shoulder wrestling in high school and it got progressively worse over time.
Intangibles2Son of Stefani and Bill Winters. Four-year starter. Solid work ethic and has developed into a leader. Wrestling background.

Offensive Guard Specific Traits

Pass Protection3Sets high and can give too much ground but anchors well for the most part. Big and strong enough to get away with less than perfect technique. Keeps power rushers honest. Violent and excels at slapping defenders' hands down as they work upfield. If they are leaning they end up on the ground. (See 13:13 4th QTR 2012 Kentucky) Flashes a strong punch and reloads quickly. Can lock out and shuffle. Adequate lateral quickness but doesn't move well enough to protect the edge at the next level. Short arms are an issue on film. Can strike defender with top of helmet before makes contact with hands. Lunges and misses. Oversets to the outside and struggles to recover.
Run Blocking3Quick first step and wide base initially. Drives legs once locked on and flashes the ability to move defenders off the ball. Flashes the ability to shoot hands inside and control defenders but struggles to sustain and spends way too much time on the ground. Inconsistent hand placement. Struggles to keep pads down after contact and leans into defenders. Turns hips and tries to toss defenders instead of driving them. Smooth and quick when asked to pull. Runs over linebackers and defensive backs in space but he doesn't sink hips and tougher linebackers can jack him up in the hole. Also has some problems reaching assignments. Needs to clean up angles and below average body control. Initial footwork is sound and can wash defenders down the line as zone blocker. Balance is a concern however.
Awareness3Appears to have some problems locating assignments on screens and in space but generally assignment sound as a run blocker. Can adjust on the fly against defensive line movement. Average recognition and discipline in pass protection. Chases defensive ends. Fails to pick up some blitzes and line stunts when overcommits initially. Starting experience at guard and both offensive tackle spots.
Toughness2Aggressive both in the phone booth and at the second level. Does not back down from challenges and finished strong against Alabama in 2011 with the game out of reach. Effort is above average and can block through the whistle but effort is a touch inconsistent. Doesn't always seek out contact when no one comes to him in pass protection.
1 = Exceptional2 = Above average3 = Average4 = Below average5 = Marginal

I always love o-lineman. But I gotta say, we sign Peterman and Colon, and now Winters? All 3 guards.

I was hoping for a safety but I'm good with beefing up the line.

Vlad's probably on his way out after this selection and the Detroit guy-signing. We're cutting dead weight and it feels f'ing good.

Wanted one of the Moores, Rambo, Thomas, or Rodgers...wouldn't have minded Franklin or Taylor either...but with the amount of talent in this draft one of these guys will be there in rd 4...which is absolutely amazing.

Love this pick too, BTW.

We could come away with four starters and a potential franchise QB. No one can complain
