ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
"Based upon their current salary cap situation, the New York Jets can't afford to use their franchise tag at all this offseason. However, given the cuts that the club is reportedly considering -- including Calvin Pace, Bart Scott and Jason Smith -- they will have a little bit of wiggle room if they wanted to lock in one of their impending FAs. The name most commonly mentioned as a franchise tag candidate for the Jets is TE Dustin Keller . The franchise tag for TEs this offseason has been projected by NFL.com to be just $5.962 million, and Rivers McCown of Football Outsiders believes that this is a reasonable price to pay..." http://mbd.scout.com/themes/scout2/post.aspx?s=65& amp;f=1875

It makes sense if you want another year to evaluate him fairly

If true, it will be interesting to see how he is used and to what extent in Marty's offense.

I like it, he's above average, and if we let him go who the hell is the TE? We have enough holes, tag him, and see what he does this yr.

He's not my favorite player but for 6 mil and with a new OC where TE's do pretty well I think you have to do it. We have enough holes to worry about.

Re: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
tagging him wouldn't prevent me from drafting a TE this year (Williams TE Bama rd 4 or later).

Re: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
This reminds me of a Tannebaum move - showing how clever he is in protecting the cap over what the team desperately needs. I'm not convinced the money could be spent better elsewhere. I'm ok with Keller, but he's not worth that amount of money if it will deter them from signing players in a more crucial position.

RE: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
I would be surprised if the Jets did not Franchise Keller. His stats would be much better if we had a QB that could put the ball in front of him and let him go rather than constantly throwing the ball behind or too high leaving Keller exposed to a big hit.

Re: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
Not sure about this. I'd think it'd be pretty hard for Keller to get a big payday considering he was injured for most of the season and when he did come back he did absolutely nothing. If its possable I'd hit him with a transition tag instead. Here the definitions between the two... http://football.about.com/cs/f...chisetransi.htm• A club can designate one franchise player or one transition playerin any given year. • The salary level offer by a player's old club determines what type of franchise player he is.
• An "exclusive" franchise player -- not free to sign with another club -- is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of April 16, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.
• If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, he becomes a “non-exclusive” franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match. The signing period for non-exclusive franchise players to sign with new clubs is March 3 through November 9 (10th week of the season).
• A transition player has received a minimum offer of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.
• A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation. Transition players can be signed from March 3 through July 22.

He's not great but he has been reasonably productive when on the field, and this team is sorely lacking talent on the offensive side of the ball.

RE: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
I'm kinda meh on him... I would be ok if we keep him with the Tag but wouldn't lose any sleep if he's gone.. TE seems to be the latest fad position these days... lets not get caught up in it and overpay when we have so many holes

Celek tore it up with the Eagles in the WCO, and Keller is a much more gifted athlete. If you thought he was "so-so" in whatever you called Schotty's & Sparano's offense, wait'll they get a load him in Marty's.

RE: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
Schotty did technically run a WCO just the Air Coryell variety where MM ran more of a Bill Walsh discipline WCO

RE: ESPN Insider believes Keller may be tagged
I like Keller, and think he would be a solid piece to the new system. As for franchising, maybe...is transition tagging him a possibility? It would be for less, and the Jets would have a chance to match any deal, but they would not get compensation if they did not match.
