Invite to Chargers Forum: RE LaRon Landry Discussion

The Jets and Chargers have a healthy rivalry, and a topic has come up on our forum that I thought I should send an invite to you guys for discussion.

My argument is that a big problem with our team is that our D has a complete lack of an Intimidation Factor.  We have zero identity, and zero players that are feared in the NFL.

My personal hope is that we can lure LaRon Landry from the Jets, and I feel that he will test the market.  Ever since we allowed Rodney Harrison to go to the Patriots, we have never been able to adequately replace him....  I feel that Landry is that guy.

So here are my questions (and feel free to drop by using the link below to join the discussion):
1.  Some feel that Landry is a "huuuuuge liability" in coverage.
2.  Most feel that Landry's style of play draws "waaaay too many" penalties.
3.  Some feel that he did not contribute to the Jets' top 5 pass defense and that it was all because of your top CB's.

Any truth to these arguments?

Do Jets fans want to keep Landry?

How big of a loss would it be if Landry moved on?

Thanks and by the way, this thread is in a normal forum (not trash talk...).  We come in peace!

Welcome to the board.

As far as Landry is concerned, I'd love to be able to resign him, but I don't think we'll have the cap space. He does play better around the line of scrimmage than in space, but he did make some plays in coverage for us. He cut down on the penalties as the year went on.

His heel is a concern, but I also believe PED use should be as well. There is supposed to be HGH testing this season for the first time. I would definitely include language in the contract to protect the team.

Laron Landry was a beast this past year. Odds are he will leave the jets to the highest bidder. While he can be a bit of an injury concern. When healthy he's shown that he is one of the top safeties in the league. I'll miss that guy.

Was a good player for us at the line and for the most part in coverage.  He definitely intimidates players going over the middle.  Definitely had a Pro Bowl type of year.  He'd be a nice pickup for San Diego.  I'd be more worried about Rivers than your secondary though...

From espninsider.com top 10 buyer beware free agents.

LaRon Landry, safety

2012 team: New York Jets

On the back of what ended up being a Pro Bowl season, Landry has positioned himself to get paid. He won't be taking a hometown discount with the Jets because in his eyes his stock is at an all-time high after he proved he could handle the rigors of an NFL season by playing 96.6 percent of the Jets' defensive snaps.

Only the tape doesn't back up his performance. Eighty-eight tackles represent a big number, but his 4.7 run stop percentage was only 14th among safeties despite his spending 46.2 percent of his snaps in the box. He also got beat for 16 first downs and four touchdowns, the 11th-highest number of all safeties in coverage. Sure Landry can put a big hit on a receiver at times, but don't let those big plays fool you. He's not an elite, difference-making player, and he misses too many tackles (his 13 were 12th highest among safeties).

yantha, Welcome to the Jet board. I will take a shot @ your questions about Landry.

He is a great SS that is very physical. He is average in pass coverage because he sneaks into the box too often to hit someone.

The guy never smiles, just loves to knock peoples jock off !

He has gotten a few roughing and unnecessary calls against him.

Yes, we want to keep him, but our Ex GM left us in Cap Hell, so might not be able to afford him.

Yantha, stick to your day job, because your draft board is terrible.noidea

Go Jets...Cyborg

Welcome to the board Bruh.pirate
My take on Laron Landry is that the guy plays like an old school football player.  He will decapitate any opposing player that comes his way.  He played lights out for us.
The only reason i don't want the Jets breaking the bank for him is that his Achilles tendon is one wrong twist from snapping.  He's been plagued with injuries before in Washington with that same problem.  Physicians have repeatedly stated he needs the surgery but he refuses to do so.  IMHO, that is a big lingering risk teams have got to think about before giving him such a big guaranteed contract.

Re: Invite to Chargers Forum: RE LaRon Landry Discussion

Landry rates out at the 10th spot in a safety-deep FA class.  Not good timing considering the depth of safeties coming out in the draft is similarly impressive.

That being said, I would love to see Landry come back to Green and White.  Rumors are afloat that we will move on from Revis while we can cash-in on his value...not a bad thing considering our combo of Wilson and Cro helped contribute to the league's #2 ranked pass defense.  However, a huge part of that, I feel, was the intimidating presence of Landry.  Sometimes "attitude" alone is a contributing factor that cannot be measured in statistics...and Landry has attitude in folds.
