Pettine to interview in Buffalo (Hired as Bills DC)
From the NY Post
Bills want to interview Jets coordinator Pettine: report POST STAFF REPORT Last Updated: 5:20 PM, January 7, 2013 Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine may be leaving the team to join a division foe. Footballscoop.com reported that the Bills have requested permission from the Jets to interview Pettine to become their defensive coordinator. Pettine’s contract with the Jets expires soon. He is expected to leave the Jets after four seasons as the defensive coordinator under Rex Ryan. The Bills just hired former Jets assistant Doug Marrone as their head coach. Marrone, who had been the head coach at Syracuse, is now working on assembling a coaching staff with NFL experience. The Jets defense finished eighth in the NFL this season. It had finished ranked first, third and fifth previously under Pettine. There has always been a question of how much credit for the defense’s performance goes to Pettine and how much goes to Ryan. Pettine may want to get out from under Ryan’s shadow to prove himself in hopes of landing a head coaching job.

That was my belief as well when I initially heard the news...makes sense he turned down the extension in case he would be considered for any HC jobs plus coordinating for an offensive minded head coach will give him more credit when the defense performs well since he will be running his own show now...shame to see him go, but I saw it coming last month just didn't know it could be the Bills I assume Dennis Thurman will be promoted to DC or Gamble will bring Jim Tomsula over from SF to take the reins as d-coordinator

I can't believe he would make a lateral move like that. Especially to a division rival. And if you are the Jets, do you really want him in Buffalo?

Jets don't really have a choice in the matter since his contract is up at the end of the month and he declined an extension...supposedly I had heard something happened b/w him & Rex...plus it makes sense to get your due as a DC under an offensive minded HC, since you can say you were running your own defense and not just mindlessly running Rex's scheme for him...not like the defense has been all that great, good yardage numbers but the past 2 years they've given up A LOT of points per game...almost 30 if I'm not mistaken, maybe mid 20s

Makes zero sense. Is he mad about something?

RE: Pettine to interview in Buffalo
It makes total sense if you knew that Pettine was apparently the guy leaking information to the media to the point where the Jets were supposedly forced to monitor his communications (according to thejetsblog.com)...friction was also said to have built up b/w him and Rex, and I assume the contract extension offer was purely a formality...

This defense was put in horrible positions more than just about any other team in the league. Given the offensive situation, and considering the lack of talent of the linebacking corps, in addition to losing your best defensive player for the year, this defense was pretty good.

Yeah, not bad all things considered. Buffalo makes no sense cause now hes gonna up there and face the same situation all over again.

RE: Pettine to interview in Buffalo
Yeah I'm not saying the defense was bad just that it will survive without Pettine...plus we didn't hold up well against the run, I acknowledge the fact that we're put in a terrible position a lot but that doesn't explain it all...we performed well for missing our top guy and I'm not bashing our D, but we'd be a lot better with someone that can sack the QB since we were bottom of the league in that and got torched in games even when Sanchez didn't throw picks in our own territory

If he doesn't come here I would be surprised. I don't know if it would be a good or bad thing-have his defenses played well?

RE: Pettine to interview in Buffalo
I said this before in other threads...when Mr P took over the calls last year the D played way more zone and was less agressive. rex called plays this year and they played much better... so I say don't let the door hit you on the way out and I wonder how is NYDaily news BFF is gonna deal without his "source." Pettine hired as D-C in Buffalo... As expected, the Bills have hired Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator. Pettine had been with Jets previous four seasons.
GOOD LUCK.

RE: Pettine to interview in Buffalo
Good riddance if he was one of the main sources of the leaks...Dennis Thurman will be fine running our D and deserves the shot
