The Ongoing General Manager Search (1/9 title edit)

it's been mentioned in other threads, and it is still just one report from thejetsblog, but i thought i'd start a new thread on this.  hopefully this doesn't wind up being premature and things fall apart.

Breaking News: Jets to Hire Gamble

January 5th, 2013 1:17 pm

Brian Bassett , thejetsblog.com

After just under a week, the Jets look close to securing a deal with their new general manager, Tom Gamble.

A source with knowledge of Jets contracts told TheJetsBlog Saturday that the deal for the current Director of Player Personnel in San Francisco looks to be around three or four years depending on an option clause and could be worth in the neighborhood of $8 million per year based on financial accelerators. Gamble is in the New York area today meeting with the Jets and has already cancelled his next interview which was set with the Jaguars.

While the announcement might not come for a few days, the wheels are apparently moving and the Jets seem set on getting Tom Gamble in as their guy to run the personnel side of the team. Gamble was the Jets top choice coming into the process and the Jets current head coach likely appreciates the type of team that Gamble has helped Trent Baalke to build in San Francisco. Ryan and Gamble also have personal history from their days where their fathers worked together for the Eagles in Philadelphia. Even so, there were rumors early on that Gamble would want to bring Niners Defensive Line Coach Jim Tomsula with him wherever he landed. No word yet on Ryan’s status.

Of course, there is the important question as to whether or not the Jets have adhered to the the Rooney Rule, which states that every team must interview a minority candidate for head coaching and general manager openings. As of right now, TJB can’t confirm whether Marc Ross has interviewed with the team, but it’s clear that Ross was cleared to do so a few days ago.

Note: I don’t normally break these things, so while I am 99% sure this is happening, stay tuned. More as we know it …

I think he is an excellent choice.

My thinking is a handshake deal is done and the team is just making sure to follow league rules and for Rex to make it back to NY.

I bet Gamble will be a part of Tues scheduled press conference.

I still think there is a wink and a nod between the Jets and Gamble

RE: Report: Jets to Hire Tom Gamble as GM

Seems like a logical choice to me, as SF is constructed similary or at least that was the Jets intention with strong defense and running games being the general philosophy. The big difference is that the 49ers were true to that construct, and we thought incorrectly that we were within a couple of veteran WRs away. If we get Gamble, don't be surprised with an Aldon Smith type pick followed by either an OL or a QB to groom for the future.

If I'm a relative or friend of his, I'm telling him to cancel it. All signs are pointing to Gamble getting the job.

I think Ross would do well in Carolina.

If I'm a relative or friend of his, I'm telling him to cancel it, it's just a waste of time, and let them go find another black dude to help them get in the clear.
You see it happen so many times its the unintended effect of the rule. It does put guys like Ross in a tough spot.

I'm not him but IMO better to get some practice at interviewing and be seen. You never know if you you make a good enough impression word will spread around the league and get you next hopefully real shot.

Either way still need to interview a minority candidate...if anything it gives Ross more interviewing experience because I have no doubt if he is not a GM this year he will be in the next 2 or 3 years

I absolutely love the Gamble hire if it's legit...he was my top choice this offseason and the hottest candidate in my opinion, he also was a coach on the Jets in the past so he is somewhat familiar with the organization, and I believe he is also from the New York area...he also has known Rex for 20 years since he knew Buddy Ryan so that also probably made it an easier sell to consider keeping Rex around for at least another year...this is a HUGE step in the right direction when this hiring is final...only other people I wanted the Jets to consider were Dave Caldwell (probably heading to Jacksonville) and Marc Ross so I would've been happy with any of the 3, but Gamble was definitely my personal preference

Firstly the Ross interview is not a waste of time until Gamble signs.. But rules like the Rooney rule are good.. If Ross interviews well he moves closer to a GM job somewhere, generally speaking word of good candidates spreads quickly.. Getting a look for a promotion is always a great thing, as long as the candidate takes it seriously.. I'm sure Ross will..

It'll be interesting to see if Gamble takes the interview.
