If Alex Smith becomes available after the season?

If Alex Smith becomes available after the season?

Due to the boiling controversy regarding starting QB's in SF, if Alex Smith loses his job...

Do you as the GM take him for the Jets starting 2013 QB assuming (big assumption) you can get another team to take Sanchez's contract off your hands?

He does play the way Rex envisions his QB to play; manage the offense and limit mistakes. He has a similar skill set as Sanchez without the penchant for making killer turnovers.  Plus he's more mobile.  I would take him for the Jets?  How about you?

I think the knock on him is that he has trouble with the deep ball...not adept at pushing the ball down the field

Smith to the Jets makes sense...if Harbaugh comes with him. It's no accident that this one time "bust" all of a sudden learned how to play.

Smith has shown more mobility, but don't forget that Rex put a collar around his dog after he hurt his knee in BUFF in '09.

Would he be an upgrade yes

Why should we settle for a game manager type QB. Why not shoot a little higher if we are going to move on.

I have said it a bunch of time I would love a big strong armed QB to run my team. It seems to me there are few that fit that mold that we can get in a reasonable spot in the draft.

Draft one to groom if he is not ready to start and pick up a serviceable vet to stop gap.

Draft a guy in rd 2 or 3 (Bray, Wilson, Klein, Glennon, etc), and stick him behind Sanchez, Matt Moore, Matt Hasselback, etc for a year.  Let there be a QB competition in the preseason and if the kid losses out then let him sit a year.

Re: If Alex Smith becomes available after the season?

Oh, and this whole thing is about 2 points -

* Harbough feels Kapernick and Alex Smith are at the same level and kapernick has a higher upside.

* Alex Smith is a free agent this summer and will want money...that the 9ers don't feel he deserves.

* If your young guy is greater than or equal to the vet wanting money and you have a chance to groom him now and win, you play the young guy who will be leading this team for the forseeable future (and he may have caught lightening in a bottle).

* Harbough made Smith and doesn't want him...neither do I.

I am more inclined to want a FA if we move on with this admin. If the admin moves on, then get a team who can pick one...I'd be good with that.

Why not do both?  Sign Smith for a short deal and draft a young guy to groom for later?
At least the Jets would probably be a better team next season (if Rex is still HC) with Smith rather than Sanchez.

Why would a guy with a 100+ QBR sign a short term contract?  When (not if) he leaves the 9ers, he'll want a long term deal.  I could see a team that doesn't get Geno or Barkley looking at him...like the Iggles, Jills, Browns, Jax, etc.  It will be interesting but I don't see him signing a 1-2 year deal and will likely be looking for a long term deal and get something like 3-5 someplace.  I could be wrong, but I don't think he signs another 1 year deal.

RE: If Alex Smith becomes available after the season?

Jets would need a superstar QB to elevate them beyond the limits of their roster talent in 2013.........so Alex Smith does not make sense when you know his ceiling and still have a year to see if Sanchez can surpass that.......while at the same time looking at the draft for Plan B in 2014.

any chbance they can bring in Rivers in 2014 if they get Norv in the offseason to be OC?

Hard to believe Smith was in SF when Pennington was still our QB. He is about to lose his job for a 3rd time. Pass.

What about Matt Flynn in Seattle? He has a cannon and we could pick him up for a song because of his salary.

Only if Mark and his bad salary is included in the deal.  The cap hit we're taking for Mark is too much, let alone Mark and Matt.

What if we could swap Mark with his old HC and get Flynn for the immediate future and still draft a QB like you suggested, would you be on board?
