This year

This year

After watching tonight's game I have absolutely no idea how the Giants will do this year.  I was disappointed in Eli and the offense again.  They still look pretty bad to me.  Hopefully they find themselves against the Lions.

Go Giants!!

I think 8-8 will be a good year for this team.

I'm starting to think that might be optimistic. I am very interested in seeing what the third down conversion rate is against Detroit. I wonder if we can hit 25% in the first game. banghead  Denver was first in the League last season at 48%. Giants were 30th at 32.7%. I am genuinely concerned that this team might not break 30% for the season.

Re: This year

As usual......the preseason doesn't really officially determine how your team might play during the regular season.....but there tends to be a tone set one way or another.   I def feel better about this year's team compared to last year's team.

Umm.......the offense is def a work in progress.....which is kind of a problem.    But......i think it will help to get into the regular season.....have a set roster....and let everyone further assimilate.

The thing I think will be better offensively......the run game.    I think we have some nice pieces in the run game and I think our OL actually blocked for the run pretty well once we got away from game one.   It didn't always show in the numbers.....but I thought there were holes or at least saw the pile push forward with somewhat regularity.    I like the combo of RJ, AW, and PH.....and I think we are probably as deep at FB compared to anyone in the league.

The passing game..........all of us remain concerned.   I just wonder about our overall talent at the WR position and we will get very minimal production from TE.    Although........I would just assume live with what Fells and Donnell can provide us and maybe keep the JPP of TEs around.....at least he seems to be able to block.   Kellen Davis just looks bad.

I am with you guys on the overall outlook.   It's hard to see this team with a ceiling much beyond 10 wins.   The best thing going for us is our division is pretty weak.......and we play the AFC South, which is not bad.....but not great, and prob has 3 teams that will be lucky to finish above .500.    We just have to survive against the NFC West.

Re: This year

If the Giants can get to their Bye week at 4-3.......I feel like we have a solid shot at making the playoffs.   And if you look at the first 7 games.......they aren't against easy teams......but there are few world beaters there.    The Cards and Eagles are the most difficult and of course the other divisional games with the Skins and Cowboys are in there.     I would not want to be worse than 4-3 with the next 3 games being against the Colts, Seahawks, and Niners.

Big challenge for the Gmen............they play their first 4 games over 17 days.   eek       Then they play their next 4 over 41 days........so they will have a chance to catch their breath.

I think we will need the defense to keep us close in the early weeks.......and hopefully the offense can catch up by midseason and we'll have a halfway decent team.

Hoss - I am wondering how you can be so hopeful for the run game while acknowledging the huge problems with the passing game. I find it impossible to believe that ANY D coordinator doesn't stack the line and dare the Giants to beat him with the pass. Yes, there is some good work being done on the ground. But with a passing game SO awful, all the D has to do is setup to stop the run. If the Detroit defense doesn't show up on the very first Giants offensive possession with 11 guys on the line, Jim Caldwell should be worried about his job. No way a team faces the Giants after this preseason without setting up to stop the run. Easiest decision in the NFL today. Put the ball in Eli's hands, blitz, and dare him to beat you, dare the line to stop you, dare the WRs to be at the right spot, and challenge your DBs to jack up their interception numbers. If I was a Detroit DB, I would be drooling over this game.

Re: This year

I do not anticipate a good season. The defense, I believe, will be good, but the offense, because of the offensive line, is going to be bad.

If the team stays healthy, catches a few breaks....7-9 or 8-8. If things fall apart and injuries set in...could be a real disaster and a 4-12 season with a very high draft pick next year (hello DE as no way they go OL with a top five pick).

In an attempt to be optimistic before the season even starts to give ourselves SOME hope, I will say that a key to making the playoffs this year will be to win in the division. They can't afford to go .500 in the division anymore. They need to win most of those games. Sweep the Cowboys and Redskins and split with the Eagles for a 5-1 divisional record. That would put them in a good position to either win the division (which isn't a hard division) or make the playoffs as a wild card. I don't really see a wild card coming from the NFC East though so I think you have to win the division to get in.

Bottom-line, I don't expect this team to make the playoffs but I will be rooting for them with all that I have.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

Dweez......I can't blame people on this board for not feeling great about where we may end up this season.    I will need to see this offense fail miserably in action during the regular season with Eli at the helm before I really throw up my hands.    I really believe the OL is better......even if it's marginally better.   I also truly believe Eli is feeling out this offense and trying to figure out who he can rely on and what his new go-to plays will be.    I would still welcome teams crowding our OL and attempting to tee off......I think they will get burned within this offensive philosophy.    I think Eli's experience last season was more of a perfect storm than Eli regressing.    I feel like we can do enough with this offense in a few different ways that should keep us productive.   But I don't deny that the skill position guys at WR and TE certainly have something to prove.

The other thing dweez.......let's be honest....the Skins and Cowboys are just not that great either.   They are kind of like us.....they can do some things well.....but their overall teams are just not that great.   We play the AFC South,.....which isn't that great.   And the Falcons and Lions haven't been the most complete teams over the last couple of years.    I know the Falcons are not that far from their NFC Championship level.......but I don't know that they are a well-rounded team anymore.     If we split with the nFC West.....that would be awesome.    So I think the Giants can get away with not playing at a top notch level.   I haven't felt that way in prior seasons.    And i frankly think our defense has enough depth and enough secondary depth to at least keep the opposition from hanging some ugly numbers on us.    The Lions will be a great test.    I don't think the Giants will be sharp, but I can't just waive the white towel if one game goes badly.   The Lions might be one of the top 4 teams on the Giants schedule.

Believe me.......in NO way do I view this as a Super Bowl team dweez.    I'm just hoping for a fun season where we have some entertaining games......the offense and defense have spurts of success, and in a perfect world we sneak past the Eagles and win the division.    I think that's this team's ceiling.   Plus I would like to see Eli prove his critics wrong one last time.   I think he has it in him.

Re: This year

The offense is a work in progress.  It might suck all year, but, because it is new, I think it will evolve substantially as the year goes on.  With pre-season out of the way, the starters will get all the snaps.  Then we will see if things start to come together or not as the season progresses.

I don't think the team will be bad because of the D.  It is possible to win with strong D in this league and I think we have one.

That would be a miracle at this point.  I do think the offensive line will come together, but my main concerns at this point are Eli and the defense.

Eli - is he finished?  I understand not being comfortable, but he has looked like Dave Brown so far this pre-season.

Defense - yeah, they have played well.  But Fewell's crews have played poorly since he arrived, and right now my gut is last season was an aberration due to playing really bad quarterbacks.  I hope I am wrong.

Re: This year

Some random thoughts for this season..watching his movement at times gotta wonder if Eli came back too soon after the ankle injury, being the guy he is they wont ever make an excuse for him...Ironic we go away from the downfield passing game and they begin to litter the field with flags on every deep play,,I wish Coach Pope was still here working with the t/e s ..Fewell is going to have to play AGGRESSIVE until the offense gels

Re: This year

The offense has looked putrid in the pre-season, but what exactly does that mean?

Since we have a new off coor and a new system, do we really show our hand in the pre-season?  I don't know the answer to that question.  I think we might try a few things, but by and large (I hope) we are holding back for week one.  Does anyone have any thoughts or comments on holding back  a new off. in the preseason?  I know the Eagles did last year and was criticized heavily for it.
