I'd go for option C and I think the team will as well - though it may not happen by week 1.

The bigger question is, are we rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship? Time will tell and Beatty is still a key.

A) Firing Squad

B) Gallows

C) Electric Chair

If Beatty can hold up his end, the line will be fine.

Ha, JDub beat me to it. I was going to say "The 1990 offensive line".

But seriously, I think that Beatty, Richburg, Walton, Schwartz and Pugh offer the best chance of success. I also feel that this line is NOT the final product that we need going forward over the next few years. I think another tackle and guard need to be brought in as starters (to replace Beatty and Richburg (with Richburg moving to center ultimately). Even Schwartz cannot be counted on to start for too many more years, so a replacement for him is needed soon. I said on another post that I wish they'd invest two high picks on the offensive line in each draft in the next year or two, but that probably will never happen.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

Re: Which OL do you want to see come Week 1 in Detroit?

There seems to be some kind of disconnect in the organization.  Coughlin wants to run the ball, he never stops talking about it, and yet the Giants signed J.D. Walton to be the starting center.  Walton's weakness is run blocking.

That kind of nonsense can't go on, but it is going on here, and it is troubling.  Nothing was as troubling as starting David Diehl at RG last year.  If an organization can't figure out that David Diehl should not be starting at RG -- in fact, Diehl should not have been wearing a football uniform last year -- then you can begin to see how the problem of player evaluation on the OL isn't going away overnight.  The Giants finally figured out that David Diehl couldn't play football, but then they sign J.D. Walton to be the starting center in a run-oriented offense?  That isn't going to work.

The OL looks pretty lousy so far in preseason.  I naturally assumed that Schwartz was a starting LG last season but this wasn't the case--he played mostly RG?  Schwartz has been terrible in the preseason--I would play him at RG, where the combination of Schwartz and Pugh can lead the running game.  Unfortunately, the Giants will still be screwed with Walton at Center, who will take away from the running game and there is no way around that.

So, RG and RT would be Schwartz and Pugh.  I would keep Richburg at center, with the possibility that he could beat out Walton.  But Richburg hasn't played well in the preseason.  I would not start him at LG or RG -- he hasn't earned a starting job over Mosley.  That would leave Mosley and Brewer to fight it out at LG with Beatty at LT.

So, Beatty (LT), Brewer/Mosley (LG), Walton/Richburg (C), Schwartz (RG), Pugh (RT)

Something to think about....the Giants were very weak last season at TE and on the OL.  Did Reese do enough to fix both areas?  The small sample size so far is not promising.

Correct me if I'm wrong -- the 1990 championship Oline: Jumbo, William Roberts, Bard Oates, Eric Moore, and Doug Riesenberg.  I don't remember if Oates was still there or if it was Brian Williams at Center, but I think Oates was still there.

Pugh taking reps at LT today during practice.

We're beyond questioning this regime regarding the OL. No answers all last preseason on the OL and here we are again experimenting as late as week 3 of the preseason rather than solidifying the unit. This team needed Taylor Lewan on draft day. They gambled and lost in the draft. That's not a shot at the WR but this team needed more OL IMO. Hope they prove me wrong but this is looking like another disaster.

Oates was there until around 1996. Brian Williams did not start until his 5th or 6th season in the NFL.

What Gordon said.   Brian Williams backed up at Guard and Center in 1990.   I almost listed the 1990 line in my initial response but you never forget your first love and I was 20 years old in 1986 and to see my G-men win a championship for the first time was something to behold.    'Let Ard be your Guard!'

It's actually kind of funny. Like a comedy of errors.

Why didn't the Giants move Schwartz to RG when Snee retired?  Thats a question nobody is asking.  if RG is Schwartz's natural position, then wouldn't it make sense to move him there?  I don't see why your playing the guy out of position after it opened up with Snee's retirement.

Why even bring Brewer into the conversation?  Everyone knows he's on the bubble for making the team, and your saying put him at LG?  Sorry, can't understand that logic.

Mosley is ok, but it seems like Richburg is being talked up as starting at LG lately.  I say if he shows he's the more talented player, then let him play there until the JD Walton experiment is over with.

I think Reese did a good job at adding more to the O-Line, its just that I don't understand why people are playing out of position (Schwartz) for so long.

Sounds like they are trying Pugh at LT and Mosley at RT, because BEatty just can not get it done. I am not sure if this is to spur BEatty into action or what, but its such a waste to have Beatty drawing a huge paycheck if he can't start at LT.

Re: Which OL do you want to see come Week 1 in Detroit?

I think that the starting Oline versus the Jets Friday Night should be the following:

LT - Pugh
LG - Richburg
C - Walton
RG - Schwartz
RT - Mosley

Richburg seems like a better fit at LG than RG ala Suebert. Suebert could play Center also. Richburg excels in pulling and Schwartz looks like a natural right guard replacement for Snee. I think Mosley played well at RG but I think he could do play RT. Lets see what Pugh can do at LT in a game. And the Jets defensive line is one of the best in football so they will be tested.

I think you have to see what Pugh can do on the left side if Beatty doesnt play well early in the year or whatever.

Re: Which OL do you want to see come Week 1 in Detroit?

I do not want to be the guy that says "I told you so!" but....I told you so! Back before the draft I was screaming for offensive line help. I wanted numerous  picks in the top half of the draft to go OL and when that didn't happen I was very unhappy. I was attacked on here big time for that. People kept telling me that I was wrong, that Reese did plenty to fix the offensive line's problems and that a WR was needed more than an OL. Well, That WR hasn't played at all because he's constantly hurt. Sure, maybe he'll go on to become a great WR for the Giants down the road, but we don't know that right now. All we know is that we could have gotten a top tackle prospect or guard and we did neither. We also know that we could have got a decent prospect at guard or tackle in the third round and again did not do so. There were also other free agent linemen out there that we did not sign, instead we signed Walton (a big gamble), Charles Brown (who is atrocious and hurt now), John Jerry (who hasn't played at all yet). And why is James Brewer still on this roster? He's never once shown any potential, yet here he is!

You don't build a team with wide receivers (ask the Detroit Lions), you build the lines first. The Giants are lacking on the offensive line very badly, again, and they are not exactly glowing with talent at DE either. But hey...we have a deep secondary now! (sarcasm) I'm disappointed in how this past offseason went.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.
