Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Giants

LGBT Advocacy Group Blasts Giants’ Hiring Of David Tyree

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) —David Tyree’s tenure in the Giants’ front office is off to a bumpy start.

The Super Bowl hero was hired as New York’s director of player development on Tuesday. The Human Rights Campaign ripped the move, criticizing the Giants for bringing on a former player who once tweeted “there is no scientific evidence to support the claim of being born gay.”

tyree also said in 2011 that he’d trade his championship ring to stop gay marriage.

“when did tyree decide to be straight?” human rights campaign president chad griffin said in a statement, according to espn. “the idea that someone can change their sexual orientation or gender identity is ludicrous, and the new york giants are risking their credibility by hiring someone who publicly advocates this junk science. his opposition to basic legal equality aside, david tyree’s proselytizing of such dangerous practices goes against the positive work the giants organization has done in recent years.”

in a statement, the franchise responded that the retired wideout “was expressing his personal view, and that is not the view of the giants organization.”

tyree received support from lgbt advocate wade davis ii, a former pro who serves as executive director of the you can play project.

So , who does have a problem with DT joining the GIANTS ?
Not me !

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Tyree is very qualified for the position.  He has worked through tough times in his life.  He is a highly respected player and he certainly knows the challenges that players face on and off the field.

I hope that there has been some conversation about imposing his religious beliefs in the work place.  He is certainly entitled to his belief.  I have to believe that he is aware that evangelizing would undermine his effectiveness as a mentor/advisor.

Admin Note:  I am thinking that this discussion belongs in the Gabes Corner forum.  If the discussion gets some legs, I will likely move it to that forum.

I think it was a bad move by the Giants. Its a fact that at some point there will be gay player(s) on the Giants, there already could be, and they will not like having to meet with someone who basically hates them. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, obviously, but Tyree went out of his way to make his known to many people. He also is extremely religious and talks about it all the time. I would not want someone that fanatical being in a position that they have put him in.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

I don't agree with DT's position but I fully acknowledge that we live in a country where he has the right to express it. He hasn't done anything illegal. To me, this comes down to whether or not his actions (as an employee of the NY Giants) are influenced by his personal beliefs. I am quite certain each of us brings specific personal biases to the workplace everyday. Some of these biases might be more controversial (and less politically correct) than others but we all have them. The question in this context is not "Do you have any biases?" but rather "Do you have any biases that will negatively impact the way you perform your job?" I clearly understand that the NY Giants have a brand and that they need to make player AND front office decisions based upon who might damage that brand. In this case, the Giants hired DT believing he was the most qualified candidate and would be able to put his personal biases aside to deliver on his charter. DT is a law abiding citizen who holds a belief I disagree with (strongly). I would imagine there are a percentage of fans that support DT's position on homosexuality and gay marriage. This is the way it works in our beloved country and all polarizing issues have sides. The core question remains: Can and will David Tyree put aside his biases and support ALL NY Giants players in the manner defined by his job description? As long as that answer is yes AND he remains on the right side of the law, I am cool with it. God Bless America...even the zany parts. :-)

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Everybody just chill for a moment.

1.  David Tyree is a Giants Super Bowl hero who'll be remembered forever.  This wouldn't even be a discussion if not for the gay backlash.

2.  Look at the position the Giants put Tyree in.  It's not one where they'll be media people will cover him doing his business after today minimum/the week maximum. Again outside the gay backlash, this is a corner page blurb on the Daily News.

3.  This story and the media's reaction makes people think Mara/Tisch don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Well they do.  I'm sure they asked him about the "trade his SB ring to make sure two men or two women never do" comment.  That's their biggest beef about his comments IMO.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

All depends on the individual seeking advice from a mentor /advisor .I am religious and would seek the advice of someone of like mind. I would prefer receiving that counsel over that of anyone in LGBT. Being fanatical in any way never works well.Lets just not confuse what we perceive to be the results of this appointment before hand.

Also :

The New York Giants hiring of David Tyree has been the cause of complaints from several gay and human rights organizations due to his famous proclamation that he would trade his Super Bowl title to block Gay Marriage.

Jerry Reese spoke out in defense of the hire today. ‪#‎NFL‬

Poll: Do Tyree's personal beliefs bother you or is it all about what he brings to the team?

Stance on gay marriage has some upset with the Giants' decision to hire Tyree.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

It is a bit of a double-edged sword as not hiring him because of his beliefs would be as much of an issue as not hiring someone because of their sexual orientation. As mentioned before, it all depends how he lets his beliefs impact his job.

If he allows his beliefs to negatively affect his performance (by either refusing to work with a gay player or actively preaching an anti-gay agenda) than he should be terminated immediately. And along the same lines, if he continues to make anti-gay public comments while an employee of the team, they have a right to fire him.

So I figure we will just see how this all plays out and if he can keep his prejudices to himself.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

This is semantics but How is David Tyree a racist?  Gay people are not a race to begin with. It's like someone saying he or she is racist towards Jews.  Jews is a religion not a race, so you can't be "racist" towards Jews.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Well.......certainly not the PR the Giants want to deal with at any time.

Again, if it infiltrates DT's ability to evaluate talent properly, then I think it's absolutely something the Giants have to take under consideration.   I think they will only be able to observe this over time.

DT has a right to his opinions, whether or not you support them.    There is clearly a divergent belief on the topic and we all have a right to carry that, so long as we respect each other's well being.

Hopefully this will be the last of something like this we'll have to deal with for a long while.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Because someone believes marriage should be between a man and a women is not "racist" or a "bigot." He's not saying a gay person shouldn't have a job or be respected, or be beaten, he's saying he believes they shouldn't be married. Why is this a problem?

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

I think gay organizations have taken a 'in your face' stance. If someone disagrees with their stance they are demonized.
I think rather than force people into beliefs that are offensive, there is a middle ground.
I start from the premise that I don't believe homosexuality is inherited but I don't believe it has major ramifications
for society. It is an 'obsessive/compulsive' affliction. Just like alcoholism, drugs, sex, internet, over eating, over working
addictions.

It might be better if the gay community pushed for 'civil unions', which would give a gay couple the same legal &
financial rights that a married couple has. "Marriage' is a concept that is older than the US and derives from
a religiously sanctioned union between a man & woman. I think most of the religious types would be more accepting
if it wasn't called marriage.

I think most people in the public eye would be doing themselves a favor if they kept their opinions to themselves.
Once you make a statement, half the population is then going to dislike you whether you are Charlton Heston,
Clint Eastwood, Alex Baldwin, Barbara Streisand etc etc. Today, over intellectualized people suffer from
'ego inflamation', it's a process and everyone 'thinks' they are smarter than everyone else.

I think these subjects can be discussed civily in another part of the forum leaving the football forum unblemished
with opinions that never change anyones beliefs but just take away from the comradre of being Giant fans.

But, I think in another part of the site, opinions should be allowed to be 'aired out', without getting personal.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

Has Tyree ever done anything anti gay?
Not as far as I know.

He just spoke out about how he feels.
Are the Giants front office that dumb to put a guy in there that would jeopardize anything about this team?
I don't think so?

This is not simply a hire because of what he has done in one Super Bowl. The Giants, including Mara and Tisch must feel Tryee is the right man for this job or he wouldn't have been hired.
Obviously if his off field beliefs interfere with his job performance then he will be out of this job, but let's give the guy a chance.
There is no 'I' in team

My bigger concern about this was answered by him in the key interview with Giants brass before they hired him.

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

It is my understanding the the director of player development works one on one with players on off field issues.  The positions that oversee the scouting of college and professional personnel (players on other teams) are;

Senior Vice President of Player Personnel: Chris Mara
Vice President of Player Evaluation: Marc Ross
Director of Pro Personnel: Ken Sternfeld\
Assistant Director of Pro Personnel: Matt Shauger
Executive Scouts: Joe Collins, Jeremiah Davis, and Steve Verderosa

Re: Lets discuss this , the civil way !

+1 Thanks Gordon. I think it is important that people understand exactly what DT's job will be before anyone implies he cannot do it. Suffice it to say, while important, he doesn't have the launch codes on player personnel decisions. As long as his personal biases do not prevent him from equally supporting ANY player who needs help, this should be a non-issue.
