What are your Top 5 Giants' defense and offense

We have five days until training camp starts so I thought this would make for fun discussion until then.

Here is my list. I am mostly going off of the teams that I have watched which started in 1988 but I have seen enough of the '86 team to know how great the team was.

DEFENSE
  1. 1986
  2. 1990
  3. 1997
  4. 2000
  5. 2007 (weren't spectacular but if you hold greatest offense ever to 14 points in the Super Bowl, you get my vote)

OFFENSE
  1. 2008
  2. 2002
  3. 1986
  4. 2011 (once they got on a roll at end of season and in playoffs they were dynamic)
  5. 1990 (they didn't score a lot but that was more because Parcells played ultra-conservative that year, very powerful offense)

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

I'm anxious to hear where some of you put the '84 and '85 teams. As I stated above, I didn't start following the team until 1988 so I never saw those seasons. I have seen and heard people say that the '84 offense was wide open and was a good passing attack but I have seen no games from that season. Also, was the '85 defense nearly as good as the '86 team?

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

I also think the 86 defense was the best ever, but as an old timer, I would put the 1956 Giants defense as the second best I have ever seen. They were just monsters.
And to add some much needed controversy here, I would rank the 1978 Giants defense as the third best. 1978 you say, we were terrible then. yes we were, but we had an outstanding defense. Front 4, Martin, Archer, Mendenhall and Gregory. LBers, Carson, Van Pelt and Kelly.. Our DB's weren't the best but they were decent enough, With Ray Rhodes, Terry Jackson, Ernie Jones and Otis McKinney at safety. With guys like Gary Jeter and Beasley Reese also on the team, we were definitely headed in the right direction. These guys played lights out and if we had any sort of an offense to go with this budding defense, we might have ended that long drought a lot sooner. Too bad about Archer. I know I cried when he was killed, he was a super star in the making.

On offense, I would go with the 1962 Giants as #1. With Tittle at the helm we were a scoring machine. After that the 2008 Giants.

There is not question in my mind that the Giants defenses from 1956 to 1963 and from 1984 to 1990 were not only the best Giants defenses but are among the great defenses of the NFL.  IMO, picking a particular year is very arbitrary.

Can anyone comment on the 1984 and 1985 team? I never saw those seasons and haven't even seen old video footage of any of those games. Was the offense as high-flying in '84 as that make it sound? It's hard to picture Parcells being that wide-open on offense. I always think of him as the guy that ran that insanely conservative 1990 offense. How was the defense in '84 and more importantly in '85?

1984 -  HB Butch woolfolk turned out to be an enigma. Parcells  benched him early in the season and went with Galbreath/Carpenter as the main backs.  HB Joe Morris finally came to life around the middle of the season, however, that team was built on Simms arm  with Bobby Johnson, Zeke Mowatt, Lionel Manuel, Byron Williams giving good performances, the surbanites started to gell and the Defense was the defense. Strong.  Carl Banks was a rookie sharing time with Byron Hunt/Andy Headon.

1985 -  HB Joe Morris exploded, rookie TE Mark Bavaro was a god send, and the Defense was stronger than 84, due in part to ILB Gary Reasons playing a whole season after taking over from Joe Mcglaughin in week 8 of 84.  They played a tough Bears team close in the 1st half, until fumbles deep in Bears territory (carpenter) and missed punt (landeta) doomed them.  1985 set up the glorious 1986 season.

I have that ever ingrained picture in my mind of Landetta whiffing on that punt on the goal line. Made the comic highlite reels for years.
We had a very good team in 85, just too bad we had to go up against maybe the best defense ever.

Harry Carson said in an interview, that after 85, they knew they were going to vie for the championship the following year, all the pieces were in place and those, like Morris, who were expected to be good, all came into form. Maybe the best Giants team ever.
