The Bears have returned to stealth mode for another free-agent signing.

On Sunday after, the Bears announced out of the blue that former Saints center Brian de la Puente has agreed to terms on a one-year deal.

De la Puente, who supplanted former Bears center Olin Kreutz in New Orlans, started 44 of 48 regular-season games from 2011 through 2013.  He also started all four Saints postseason games in the last three years.

As explained by Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, de la Puente is expected to back up Roberto Garza in Chicago.  As pointed out by Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the move reunites de la Puente with former Saints offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who’s now the offensive coordinator in Chicago.

For the Saints, Tim Lelito becomes the starting center, for now.  Undrafted in 2013, Lelito appeared in 16 games with two starts last season.

Wow. As a backup? He couldn't even get a starting job? Something tells me he isn't as good as some Giants fans were led to believe.

Agreed.  I always thought something was wrong with him not being signed before guys like Wendell and Deitrich.

I`ll take De La Puente over JD Walton any day, the last time Walton played was 2012 De La Puente is s solid veteran who was the starting center for the Saints for the last couple of seasons, now the Giants HAVE TO DRAFT A CENTER IN NEXT MONTH`S DRAFT. I still think the Giants overpaid Walton, I still think Walton is not the answer at center.

Reading comments from various Saints fans on De La Puente, it appears they don't view him as much better than Charles Brown. Not many tears being shed over him in Saints nation.
I think Walton is a placekeeper. He'll be the starting center until a rookie we pick in the mid rounds is ready.

If Walton goes down again who will replace him? De La Puente was the Saints center for the past three seasons and started every playoff game while Walton was sitting on the bench with his bum ankle. The Giants should`ve brought in De La Puente to challenge Walton for the starting job. Right now half of the Giants OL is made up of a center with a bum ankle who hasn`t played since week four of 2012, a LT coming off a broken leg and a Guard coming off two hip injuries.

You can't overhaul the entire Oline in one offseason. Getting Pugh in last year's draft was the start. Schwartz was the big move this offseason. There will probably be an Olinemen or two drafted this year as well. The signings of Brown and Jerry added much needed depth since Brewer, Mosley and Hermann showed next to nohing last season. Its far from perfect. But its going to take a while to rebuild the Oline properly.

Re: Bears sign De La Puente

Don't count the new O-line players out before the season has started. Walton has been a solid starter and now that he's healthy, he could be one again. I am worried about the LT spot because, even when healthy, I've always seen Beatty as a question mark; he just doesn't have the 'right stuff'. Snee is also an issue as he'll never be able play at the level he did a few years ago. However, this doesn't mean with the right blocking schemes and some hard work that this line can't jell and perform at at acceptable level.

Acceptable level isn`t good enough for me.

Why as a backup? When your starting center is team captain Roberto Garza who`s been a monster at center for the Bears you come in as the projected center. Why do I say projected? Because Garza is 35 and De La Puente is 28 and knows the system because he played two years for Bears OC Aaron Kroner when he was in New Orleans.

Re: Bears sign De La Puente

#31 teams did not want De La Puente. He may not be cracked up to be what you thin k he is. I heard Saints fans say he isn't anything to miss for what that's worth. Walton was cleared to play by our medical staff and is ready to return to form, Tom COughlin and Jerry Reese signed off on him. Walton may be better than you think and DLP didn't exactly have too many teams chasing after him. Something isn't right with him. He only got a 1 year deal.

Still, a one-year contract does not suggest anything more than insurance for one year.

Re: Bears sign De La Puente

Our very own Rich Seubert came back to play at a very high level after a devestating injury and a long time out of the game.
id rather take a chance on Walton, who could return to play at a high level, than have DeLa whatever his name is, and know what you are getting....just an average Center.

He signed for the veteran minimum with only $165K guaranteed. That says a lot.

and if Eli goes down...
and if Cruz goes down...
and if Rolle goes down...
and if DRC goes down...
and if JPP goes down...
and if Coughlin goes down...

and if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Re: Bears sign De La Puente

De La Puente was a product of ALWAYS playing with 2 All-Pro guards next to him

First he had Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans....then he had Ben Grubbs and Jahri Evans....those guys are beasts

Any Average Joe at Center would look better than he really is when sandwiched in between 2 dominant guards

He also sucked as a run-blocker this past season, and had some holding penalties

Well I think he's referring to the fact that Walton hasn't really played in nearly two years. That's why I think it's important we draft a quality Center prospect.

JD Walton was a really good college player and highly regarded in the 2010 draft. He was bad his first two years in the league. Year three with Peyton, he started to come into his own before getting hurt.

The Giants are betting that he can regain his early-2012 form. Not a terrible gamble but they do need a contingency in place. I'm hoping they add a talented backup through the draft. De La Puente wasn't the answer.

If any of those players get injured there are backups ready to play but if Walton gets injured who will replace him? De La Puente should`ve been signed as insurance in case Walton goes down or to compete for the starting job. Injuries will happen and right now we only have one guy to play center and whoever the Giants draft but who would you rather have if Walton goes down?  A rookie or an experienced veteran?
