NGT: Brees roughing the passer call

NGT: Brees roughing the passer call

Well......I guess this is the state of NFL 2013 and forward.    I suppose by the letter of the law.....the penalty was correct........but I personally despise that it's a penalty.     Seriously......what's a defender supposed to do?     And now they want to FURTHER review how to protect the QB?        I have an idea......let's not allow more than 3 guys to rush.....ever.    That way you don't have to worry about it.   Just let the scores be 70-50....like an NBA game.

I don't know.....I really don't.    While that play alone did not make the primary differential in the game (even though it was a major event).....it just doesn't feel right that it would cost the Niners the game.    The NFL has to be careful.    Fans know when they feel wronged.

Agreed.  If they got the call right, they should change the rule.  True, the defender hit him high, but it wasn't a head shot; it was more neck.  If the QB was taller, the flag isn't thrown.

Football is in a tough spot here.  The game isn't safe to play, but if they make it too safe people will stop watching.  I'm not sure if there is an easy solution to the problem.

My guess is that they will make the game safer and safer until they start losing fans.  Baseball will reemerge as the country's national pastime.

The league is doing the right thing... Bree's will have to live like this for the rest of his life.

I think the roughing the passer is more about the quality of the game than it is about safety.  How many quality QBs are there in the league?  Certainly less than 16.  The league simply cannot afford to lose the top 12 or so QBs and maintain a high level of quality play.  The defense would dominate and that is not what they want.

Re: NGT: Brees roughing the passer call

My biggest problem with the penalty is that it's not even a neck hit. His arm clearly contacts Brees on his upper chest padding. The whiplash of his neck is what makes it look like a huge hit and is also what proves his neck wasn't what took the hit. Bad call.

Ahmad Brooks vs. Drew Brees play

Did you guys see the play from the 49ers-Saints game?

I think it was pure b.s. He tackled him around the front of the shoulder pads and upper chest, then the momentum caused Brees's neck to go into Brooks' bicep. To me, that is a clean play and 10 years ago we wouldn't have even been discussing it. It's a football play, and a very good one at that. The fumble should have counted and the 49ers should have won that game. If I'm a 49er fan, I'm furious about that call.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

If its by the book......then it wasn't a blow to the head

It looked more like a close line hit

It was the velocity that he hit him with and the reaction.

I would be pissed too if that was what happened to the Gmen

RE: Ahmad Brooks vs. Drew Brees play

One of the things that I suspect is going on is that the refs are very concerned about how they grade out each game and that influences how they call the game.  I am suspecting that missing a roughing the QB penalty might affect their grade.

Last night I saw what in my view were a lot of ticky tacky calls in the KC Denver game. It is that game that got me thinking that the grading system that the NFL uses for refs may be such that it is having a negative impact of how games are called.

They throw flags now it looks like the hit hurt. It has nothing to do with technique or whether or not a helmet was involved.

I would rather watch curling. Has more action. It was a terrible call. Defenders are going to end up taking out guys legs because if you hit a guy above the navel you're at risk of a flag.

RE: NGT: Brees roughing the passer call

good call. first he was hit in the upper shoulder with the defenders arm across his neck, and when brees went down the arm slid into his adams apple.

YOU DONT TACKLE GUYS BY THE ADAMS APPLE., not when they make 20 million and are one of the main faces of the league !!!!!!

good call, refs got it correct.

another mitigating factor is brees is 5'10" and the LB is 6'5". the arm is where it should be and on Eli wouldve been mid chest, against Brees, in the neck area.

RE: NGT: Brees roughing the passer call

An argument can be made that this was tackling at the head level.

Rolle had two of these in the last game and I was holding my breath. Honestly either of those could of been a penalty it was close.
I'll be looking to see if the league fines Rolle, if they don't they are kind of blessing this high tackle as long as you don't grab inside the shoulder pad too much. And what fine of Ahmad Brooks ??? That will be very interesting, if it's low then you know the NFL is saying ' we have gone too far and made a mistake '

This is a seminal moment for the new rules I believe. If the League comes down hard on Brooks then old school football is forever gone. I believe they will reverse direction a bit now because despite their want of increasing safety, the art of the game is now suffering.

Think of boxing without blows to the head.~stoney
