Giants sign K David Buehler

The Giants announced today they have signed kicker David Buehler.

Buehler, who turned 26 last week, was with the Dallas Cowboys from 2009-2011. He handled kickoff duties throughout the first two of those seasons and in four games in 2011. In three years, Buehler had 60 touchbacks on 175 kickoffs, a 34.3 percentage. He led the NFL with 29 touchbacks (on 76 kickoffs) as a rookie in 2009.

In 2010, Buehler was also the Cowboys’ field goal kicker. He made 24 of 32 attempts (75 percent) with a long field goal of 53 yards vs. New Orleans on Nov. 25. Buehler also succeeded on 42 of 44 extra point tries for 114 points.

Buehler played in four games the following season and had nine touchbacks on 18 kickoffs. He did not attempt a field goal. Buehler was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 10, 2011 with a torn adductor muscle. He underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip on Dec. 11. Buehler was waived/failed physical by the Cowboys on March 13, 2012.

Buehler did not play in 2012.

smart move for tynes maybe on the way out.
'
tynes ended last season missing kicks, one in washington a 43 yarder that costs the giants dearly.

I'm all for bringing in the best players available.... I don't think Buehler is going to be much better than Tynes.

Buehler isn't accurate and Tynes doesn't have a strong leg.  I've been saying it whenever I can, the Giants should draft Caleb Sturgis.  One of the best kickers in the draft with a strong leg and nice accuracy.

I am so with you on this. If Tynes is not coming back, I want a young college kicker with a strong leg. A top kicking prospect. I'm willing to invest a 7th or 8th round pick on one. He'd be dirt cheap and might actually upgrade the position.

I do not like what I am reading about this Buehler guy. Doesn't sound very impressive at all.

With all the moves that need to be made this offseason, I'm quite intrigued with what happens at the kicker position.

Great teams rely on each other.

Matt Dodge was a punter.

Re: Giants sign K David Buehler

Tynes was definitely  not on top of his game as the season wore on, whether this is a good move or not awaits to be seen.
Just what did they sign him for a bucket of beads or real money, I doubt he could have cost much and what does he get if he doesn't make the team , Saying the Giants have signed him doesn't really tell us much.
It could just be a competition signing or adios Tynes,
Tynes had an 81.5 % FG ave he's 17th on the best average list you have to go all the way down to 31 st to find a F.G kicker with only a 75% average
Dan Bailey of Dallas leads the pack with an 89.7 %  75% is poor could cost us some games or indeed a lot of games Giants must feel he's better than his stats.or they had an extra $1,000 bill laying around and said "what can we get with this"?

Taking a top kicker 7th rd is a no brainer.

Kickers actually the last time i checked put points on the board. And win playoff games and superbowls last i checked...

If Tynes is going to cost us too much $$$ which we don't have...time to get a college leg and have a vet compete.

Think Tynes was getting 1.5 mil.

I wonder if it was "tired leg" that
caused him to lose it.
Remember...we stunk on scoring TD's
when we failed miserably to get first
downs the last 3 games or so.
He was leading scorer for the team, I thought.

It's just that since he couldn't do touch backs
that his job is up...Yes...we need an upgrade
with young legs for a fraction of the cost.

There is no 8th round...and a 7th riund pick doubt seriously would yeild a top kicking prospect !

Re: Giants sign K David Buehler

It is possible that they signed Buehler simply to provide some competition for Tynes and/or to handle the KO and 50+yd FG duties.  It's been done before....

Yeah, but I would think the JR  be extremely cautious of using any draft pick on a football player that just kicks the ball again.  New York is NOT the place for a rookie punter/kicker to be thrown into the fire like that as Matt Dodge has proven.

Justin Tucker was different.  1, Baltimore is not New York and 2, After Cundiff missed that FG, the fans there were open to anything, and Tucker beat him out.

I'm all for bringing in guys to create competition. If Tynes can't beat Buehler out in camp then he doesn't deserve to be our kicker.

I really don't like this signing at all. As much as Tynes has struggle at times, he is 100% better than Buehler.

Doubt they'll get a comp pick...they lost MM,Ross & Tolley ,but signed Bennett,S.Brown & Locklear....seems like a break even situation,but who knows?

Someone mentioned to me(2-23-13) that S.Brown was a RFA with the Colts, but wasn't tendered,so he doesn't count as a typical FA signing against them, which hopefully is the case and perhaps a 6th comp pick is in line...can use all the picks they can get !
