House cleaning is needed, however, Reese is fooling himself if he sticks with Fewell. If we are going to clean house on Defense, start at the top.

How are Webster and Diehl not the first to be shown the door?

RE: Canty just cut too...

Webster should stay, you can't revamp your whole defense and somehow get better players for less money. Everyone is just remembering that pitiful game he had against the Ravens. Yes, he didn't play that great the whole year, but the guy had a broken hand at one point, to go along with some other leg aliments.

The guy at 58 solo tackles, 4int's and 13 passes defended. I remember when we had Will Allen and Will Peterson and they didn't have for int's together. Yes, I agree, the stats don't tell the whole story, but IMO he wasn't that bad.

Just an uneducated guess, but I get the feeling they're now releasing players who refuse to discuss pay cuts and/or restructuring contracts.

I can see Webster being resigned at a much lower salary. Same for Diehl, who could be the Jumbo TE and who has played all the OL positions except center.

Re: Canty just cut too...

Yeah it was time for Canty to go, he was a decent Free Agenty signing when he was Healthy but he never really lived up to the Money they paid him to get him from the Cowboys, probably better in a 3-4 as a DEnoidea

We need another Defensive Tackle next to Joseph for sure, Austin can't stay healthy and Kuhn may take a few years to develop

Re: Canty just cut too...

I'm thinking that Diehl will accept a major pay cut.  Essentially, Diehl will likely accept an amount that is slightly above the total dead money that his release would produce anyway.  Diehl must know that he is out of football if the Giants release him and so, if he wants to stay around, he will need to accept whatever terms the Giants offer him and that would involve a massive pay cut.

If Diehl does return in 2013, he will hopefully return as bench depth and not a starter.

This is true.  Canty's release creates a noticeable hole at DT for the Giants.  But Austin has a lot of upside and might be ready to start.  Kuhn, on the other hand, was a slightly older player when the Giants drafted him.  I don't believe he has much upside.  Austin is three years younger than Kuhn.

I'm OK with Joseph and Austin as the starting DTs, with the Giants adding depth through free agency (and not the draft).

I am not comfortable starting Austin. As a backup DT, sure. Fine by me. But if you are asking a player who hasn't played football for three straight years and expect him to start and be somewhat effective is being very delusional.

Austin will need to be in a rotation of some sort, but I think he can contribute as a starter as early as next season.  A year ago, how many Giants fans thought that Beatty would develop into a top ten left tackle?  Austin has talent, he just needs to stay healthy.

Both Canty and Bradshaw are really nice guys.

I love Bradshaw, more of course. Suck that they were cut because of financial decisions.

Re: Canty just cut too...

The Giants have released 3 guys who are in the final year, Canty has two more, who are due a lot of money and are either battling injuries or on the decline. It's tough to see the Giants cut three players on the level that Canty, Boley and Bradshaw are, they're making the right decisions.

Canty was a beast last year.  This year, he was a shell of himself and clearly never was 100% after the knee surgery.

RE: Canty just cut too...

We can't afford to get rid of Webster too. I think his play in the Ravens game is what everyone is remembering. Don't forget he had a cast of his hand for however many weeks and he still had 4INT's and 13 PD's, to go along with 58 solo tackles.

Furthermore, If you cut Webster who is going to replace him and play better then him, at a cheaper cost. Most here believe that we already need a RT, a DT, 2-3 LB just to fill starting positions. If we are lucky and I mean real lucky we can get 2 starters from the draft. Remember TC hardly ever starts rookies.

I would bet that Webster stays this year. Plus, I think I remember reading, it would cost too much of a CAP hit to release him.

Finally, lets take a look at some of the WR's, Webster had to face throughout the year. I will start with Dallas: Romo, Dez, Austin, Ogletree (he killed us the 1st game)and Whitten. Say what you want about Romo, the guy is a gamer. Then he had to play against V. Jackson on TB.  Steve Smith CAR,  Crabtree and Moss SF, D. Jackson and Maclin PHI,  Wallace PIT, Green CIN, All the GB WR's, Brees and his WR's, White and Jones ATL, and finally Torrey Smith, who just made him look awful.  Don't forget he had a broken hand and he played in all 16 games. Prince missed 3 games.

I am by no means a big Webster fan and would gladly except any player at any position for that performs better, at anytime. This is not his time
