Should the Giants add a new kicker?
I read an article earlier, can't remember where I saw it, but it was about the fact that if the Giants had a kicker with a stronger leg, they could have been 11-5 and 5-1 vs. the NFC East this year.
I thought about it, and they're right. Tynes missed that 54 yarder against the Eagles (in Philadelphia) and the 47 yarder against the Redskins (in Washington). Either of those field goals wins the game. Who knows what happens this postseason if the Giants win the East.
I know that Tynes had a good year, and he's improved a lot on his kickoffs, but the fact is that he's never had a strong leg and he's can never be counted on to make long kicks when the team has to have it (minus the 47 yarder in the 2007 NFC Title game). He's an UFA and will probably command decent money. The Giants are already paying punter Steve Weatherford over $2M a year. They can draft a top kicker at the end of the draft and save a lot of money and add a stronger leg, but also lose that veteran experience.
It'll be interesting to see what the Giants do.
Good teams rely on their stars, Great teams rely on each other.

Re: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
I would be surprised if Tynes is not our kicker in 2013. I believe keeping him will come from the "loyalty" factor of TC.

Loyalty is not a four letter word Tupper. However, a four letter word for guys that kick the ball.....Matt, as in Dodge! Hope we keep Tynes.

RE: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
The reality is had the Giants had scored more TDs instead of settling for 3s they would of been 11-5 or 12-4 easy especially in those losses to the Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins

Lawrence types is going nowhere. And we've been bit once before on a drafted kicker. Also you lost credibility bringing up the eagles kick

RE: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
Lost credibility? Huh? A 54 yard field goal is not makeable? Obviously its not likely but its not impossible. There are kickers in this league that make that kick. I'm not saying he's the reason they lost that game, not at all, but I'm just pointing out that a strong legged, accurate kicker could have made that. Janokowski and several others would have probably made it. Heck, Matt Bryant probably makes it.
Good teams rely on their stars, Great teams rely on each other.

Re: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
I don't think it's a crazy thought. Tynes made 84.6% of his tries this year, good for 17th in the league. His long was 50 yards, good for 29th in the league. I think if an upgrade is available, you take it. I'm not sure why one earth that wouldn't be the case.

I think Tynes got burned out. He was on pace to set the FGs made record. He may have been overworked a bit which made those long FGs a little tougher.

The missed 54 yarder at Philly had nothing to do with fatigue. It was Week 3. The missed FG at Washington is more possible that fatigue set in. FTR, I consider 50+ yard field goals a 50-50 average proposition. Add to it being the final play of the game to decide a game, and it's more pressure. I was sure he'd make the GW FG if not for that offensive pass interference at the end zone. I had no problem with them not settling for the FG the way I didn't have a problem with the last TD the Giants score in the 2011 season

We have no problem at kicking . Tynes is just fine !
Doesn't hurt to bring a little competition in the pre season , but I believe he'll be kicking for the GIANTS next season !

54 yards is rough, but don't forget he missed that kick twice. First when Philly called a TO and then again the second time. Upgrades are always welcome at any position.

Re: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
Tynes regularly makes my blood pressure elevated......but usually the guy has come up and brought it in the clutch moments. I don't know how a kicker gets tired.....but perhaps his focus lapsed a bit. I thought the missed FG in Atlanta was a semi-big deal as it re-deflated an already flat Giants squad. That stuff annoys me......but the guy was on pace for setting a FG record.....which I think deserves consideration.
If someone is available that could be an upgrade.....great. But I'm not in a hurry to make a change at either kicking position.

His touchbacks are ranked very low ,pretty sure, and they should at least look to see what's available, but I suppose keeping him for a reasonable $$ wouldn't be all that bad either!

Re: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
This kind of question seems to come up a lot... Football is about winning and ANYTIME you can find a player (or coach) that improves your chances of winning you have take it. Loyalty is a nice luxury in a non-competetive environment. I don't mean to sound clinical, but in the NFL nobody is irreplacable. Nobody.
Now, if you only want to change for the sake of changing, you're making an emotional decision that's likely to blow-up in your face (The Dan Reeves Paradox). In the case of Tynes, it's far better to live with the devil you know rather than spin the wheel and live with the devil you don't know.

RE: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
You don't kick those FGs unless the game is seconds from over or Halftime..otherwise it's a non issue.
I have no problems with him resigned.
I do agree with the opinion..we was used a lot because of a complete FAILURE to get 3rd conversions that should have easily been done. That's the OL and the AGE factor..our guys all year got pushed around like rag dolls. We need to get younger and have that MAULER personality.

RE: Should the Giants add a new kicker?
Tynes is a FA. I say let him walk and use the 6th round pick to draft K Caleb Sturgis from Florida. During practice for the Eas-West Shrine Game, he was drilling them from 50+ out (54 and 57 yards out). Cheaper option than Tynes as well as having a younger, more powerful leg that will actually reach the goal post. I say thank you to Tynes for kicking the Giants to 2 Super Bowl victories, but he's on the decline now. Bring in a yunger guy who can be a weapon for the Giants since they might continue down the path of not scoring in the damn red zone.
