According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 cap
http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoff...ct-cap-strategyAnd this doesn't count the 5-10 million that will go to Victor Cruz or the money that will go to Stevie Brown (both players are restricted free agents). Once those two contracts are factored in, the Giants are significantly over the cap. They will have limited resources for free agency. After restructures and cuts, the Giants resources will be spent on resigning players: Cruz, Brown, Beatty (and he will cost a lot of money as well), maybe Boothe, maybe Bennett. Hopefully, the Giants can free up a little extra money to sign a D. Smith or a comparable free agent for MLB. We can forget about a quality free agent CB, the good ones will be priced out of the Giants range. The Giants will need to address CB through the draft mostly. I'm assuming they will cut Webster, and that will leave Hosley and Prince as the starters, but they will need to draft for depth at the position. As far as RT goes, again, the money isn't there for a quality free agent. I think Brewer and Mosley will compete for the starting job. Boothe and Bennett? If they want too much money, the Giants might let them walk, which would create depth issues at both positions. Maybe let Cordle and a draft pick compete for the starting job at LG. I would like to see the Giants retain Bennett, as I would like to see some two TE sets with Bennett and A. Robinson in 2013. Both players are very athletic and would create match up problems for defenses. I would like to see the Giants offense evolve a little bit and give a bigger role to the tight ends. I think we will see at least 3 cuts among the following players. The ones that remain accept pay cuts: Diehl, Tuck, Canty, Boley, Rolle, and Webster I think Snee and Bradshaw are safe.

If Webster refuses a restructure...CUT in a NY second.
Diehl is already a cut.
Savings! $14-15 million? Snee needs to Restructure.
This is where Eli needs to take leadership role...restructure. Why? To protect his own butt.

Savings! $14-15 million? According to the numbers that I have seen (which may not be accurate), the Giants would free up close to 19 million if they release Diehl, Boley, and Webster. I believe that releasing those three are no-brainers. Interestingly, resigning Brown, Cruz, and Beatty will cost more than 19 million and so the Giants will need to find more cap space beyond this. At the end of the day, the Giants will NOT have the resources for a top free agent. The Giants will be bottom feeders in free agency, but maybe they can sign a guy like D.Smith, who would upgrade their LB unit.

Yes Eli did restructure 2 years ago. I think he restructures if they ask him to, but he keeps it on the down low. He doesn't make public annoucments about it.

RE: According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 ca
There is no way that Brown, Cruz and Beatty would be a 19 mil CAP hit in 2013. They just do not do contracts that way. Signing bonuses and guaranteed salary are structured in such a way that the first year and often the second year are invariably CAP friendly. Webster's 2008 contract extension is a good example. In 2009 he received 9 mil but only 3 counted towards the CAP. In 2010 he received 6.75 mil with a 6.75 mil CAP hit. 2011 - 2013 his CAP hit should be around 11.5 mil. If he is cut, the Giants would save 7.5 mil in CAP.
Starting in 2016 the salary CAP is expected to rise by 4% a year. That will be a factor in how teams structure contracts. Until then, it appears that the Salary CAP will be between 121 and 130 mil.

RE: According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 ca
I am very much a novice when trying to understand exactly how the cap works, but unless I am wayy off on Beatty, Brown, and Cruz's values... I am not understanding how they come in at 19+ either....
Stevie should be a 1.5 - 2.5 a year guy, Beatty maybe 3ish? Cruz 5-10? And those would be averages 1st years may be significantly lower.
Restructuring or cutting the vast number of over-paid players on the team should free up quite a bit to allow them some breathing space at least... I hope!

Snee should also restructure another savings. I think we'll be fine in Cap Space this year with the right Cuts as well as restructures...Of course the Cuts will be the whopper to free it up.
If Bennett prices himself to high then he goes..bye bye.
We take another TE in the draft. I like that Stanford kid.

RE: According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 ca
If the Giants give Cruz a first round tender, which is what they will do if they don't agree on a long term deal, the cost for a first round tender was around 2.7 million for Mike Wallace last season and it will be around the same amount this year. However, if another team offers more money to Cruz, the Giants can either match that offer or let Cruz go for a first round pick.
If the Giants don't resign Cruz or Brown to long term deals, I would expect both players to receive first round tenders, again, at around 2.7 million, and then it just depends on whether another team is willing to give up a first round pick. If not, both players come back at a very reasonable cost. Since he is a restricted free agent, the Giants definitely have leverage in their contract talks with Cruz. On the other hand, maybe Cruz feels that another team will make him a big offer and give up a first round pick for his services. But even if that does happen, the Giants get a first round pick out of it and so not all is lost.
Beatty is unrestricted and so he presents a bigger problem for the Giants. If the Giants don't resign Beatty, they will need to use the franchise tag on him. The franchise tag for Left Tackles is expected to be around 15 million this year.
The Giants best strategy is to sign Beatty long term and avoid the franchise tag so that he doesn't consume 15 million of the 2013 cap. After resigning Beatty, the Giants should give first round tenders to Cruz and Brown if they aren't signed to reasonable long term deals.
So, in retrospect, those three players probably won't cost 19 million against the 2013 cap However, if the Giants use the franchise tag on Beatty, and they may need to do that, they will reach that figure. There is a chance that the Giants will use the franchise tag on Beatty and then attempt to sign him to a long term deal in order to lessen the impact on the 2013 salary cap.

One thing worth nothing, that -4.7 million cap figure might include T.Thomas' contract.
I think the Giants structured Thomas' contract so that he could be released in the off-season without costing the Giants any cap space.

Isnt Rolle due in the $9 mil range?? I would think he would be asked to take a pay cut, or maybe restructure on an extension.

RE: According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 ca
I don't quite understand how the Giants are always over the cap. The only expensive players they have are Eli, Webster, Canty (who knows why), Snee (again, why), Rolle and Boley. This isn't a star-studded roster like other teams have, such as Dallas and San Francisco etc. I guess this is what happens when your quarterback makes over $100M. That contract for Eli has really tied their hands, but in a quarterback driven league that's how it has to be.
I've never understood why the Giants are dishing out so much money to Canty. He needs to be cut. They won't have to pay Osi anymore so there is savings there. Webster needs to restructure or else be cut (even though that puts the Giants in a horrible position next year with such young, unproven guys starting at CB).
Again, I just don't understand how they're in this position. They can't afford to lose guys like Webster, Rolle, etc. They need those experienced players.
Good teams rely on their stars, Great teams rely on each other.

Oh and I forgot to say this, there is no need to stick someone in at RT that isn't qualified when the Giants can re-sign Sean Locklear for another year or two. He performed very well before his injury this year. He was much better than Diehl.

Giants will not use a franchise tag on Beatty, they will not risk having to pay him $15.... If Miami wont do it with Jake Long.. Giants wont be doing it with an average LT that has had injury problems... They would look to sign another FA.

Don't forget that in some of the uncapped seasons prior to the lockout, the Giants were one of the few teams spending on its roster. Plus......when you're good.....you usually have guys on the roster that are paid pretty well. :-) What......no mention of the savings from Osi? Does that cap number exclude Osi sage??? I could see the Giants using the axe on quite a few of the guys listed on Sage's list. I would add that Snee is not safe, either. He will def need a contract restructuing. Sadly, I think Corey Webster will be shown the door. I think Rolle should go.....but for some reason I feel like the Giants will keep him around....just a hunch. Plus.....we all will wonder who gets franchised this year. Would it be crazy for Boothe to get franchised??

RE: According to report, the Giants are 4.7 million over 2013 ca
I'm really interested in seeing if the Giants just look to make a few tweaks or if they shock everyone and start a major overhaul, such as cutting all the veterans most of you have listed. That would constitute an overhaul, cutting your best corner, your best offensive lineman, your best DT, your best safety. You have to replace those guys and its not easy and will take time. If they make those many changes, you can pretty much count out 2013 as a contending year.
If I'm GM (I know, scary thought), I would want to retain Webster, Beatty, Locklear, Rolle and Boley. I'd ask them to take pay cuts though (other than Locklear who is obviously a FA). I'd wave goodbye to Diehl and Canty without even asking for a pay cut. I'd ask Tuck for a pay cut and if he wouldn't agree I'd cut him. I, frankly, can't believe he's expected back. He makes a pretty good penny and he isn't close to what he used to be, and really he hasn't for a few seasons now.
I'd invest two draft picks on the offensive line and all of the rest I'd spend on the defense (DT, CB, LB).
Good teams rely on their stars, Great teams rely on each other.

There is no way that the Giants don't use the franchise tag on Beatty if he isn't signed long term. According to PFF, Beatty was the 9th best LT in the NFL, behind J.Staley, D.Brown, M.Roos, R.Clady, J.Thomas, D.Ferguson, E.Monroe, and A.Whitworth. But the difference between 9th best (Beatty) and 3rd best (Roos) was rather slight. Roos earned a 27.8 overall grade, while Beatty earned a 22.4 overall grade. The difference between 9th best (Beatty) and 6th best (Ferguson) was meaningless: Ferguson earned a 23.5 overall grade. In other words, Beatty is one of the best Left Tackles in the league, arguably a top 5 Left Tackle. Sure, a 15 million franchise tag would be an overpay, but the Giants don't have a choice. An organization cannot let a top LT leave for a mere compensation pick. And, if Beatty hits the open market, the Giants will not resign him--another team with more cap resources will swoop in, we can be certain of that. The Giants will need to use the franchise tag on Beatty to keep him from the open market. They can then negotiate a long term deal. If the Giants don't want to pay Beatty, it would make sense for them to use the franchise tag anyway and then trade him for a high draft pick.

I think it does exclude Osi. We are dealing with the 2013 numbers, and Osi is no longer under contract in 2013. But T.Thomas might not be excluded and so once the Giants release him, the cap number would come down.

Osi's contract reportedly includes 1 mil in salary for 2013. That was done so they could write off his 2 mil bonus over a 2 year period. So, the 4 mil over could very well include 2 mil of CAP that is associated with Osi with a 1 mil saving if Osi does not play for the Giants in 2013.
