Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
There are a decent amount of good DCs available out there, and yet the Giants are sticking with Fewell. I don't think that Fewell is awful, but I disagree with his defense from a fundamental standpoint. I don't believe in a defense sitting back and waiting for the offense to make a mistake and using turnovers as the means to stopping them. At times it seems like there are only two outcomes when the opponent has the ball. Either they'll drive down the field and score a TD or FG, or the Giants will get a turnover.
I think the defense needs more players. They need some pieces on the d-line, they need a linebacker or two, they need another "good" corner. However, as stated above I just don't agree with Fewell's scheme. I believe in attacking on defense, on trying to force the offense to change their scheme. This is why I loved Spags and John Fox.
Good teams rely on their stars, Great teams rely on each other.

It's a moot point as long as TC is here because he will protect his coaches.

Yes and because no change is being made, I am really not looking forward to next season. We can expect a lot more of the same. It's too bad really.

There is nothing wrong with the coaching staff that a healthy, and acceptable roster won't fix. The DLine needs improvement, as well as a STRONG MLB, with a healthy Phillips to go with Stevie Brown with Rolle as the 3rd Safety/slot. A healthy Webster, along with Prince and there will be NO complaints about Fewell next year. Except of course for those who just love to complain.

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
I don't love the PF scheme.....but I would also say that our players on D really don't complement the system that well. I am ok with us turning over some elements of our defensive roster with the hope we better stock ourselves with guys that may be better suited for this system.....
I might not have minded sliding a Pettine or Rob Ryan type in here......but that is not happening based on the mindset of our FO (which I like) regarding stability and character. So.......we will have to wait and see.
However.......I think leagued's POV is gaining more velocity from the fanbase. I think we are going to be very ornery if we have another carbon copy of last season occur.

Nope Leagued.
no reason to change the 30th ranked...seriously, the roller coaster will continue imo
next yr - 50+ sacks? :-)
lets see how this all pans out with a clash of should I stay or should I go, on defense. 1982 was a long time ago.

RE: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
I'm a little disturbed Coughlin is keeping Fewell around after the defense looked as bad as it did. Coughlin always says "injuries aren't an excuse" so what excuse does he have in keeping Fewell around? The Falcons and Ravens games should of been a wake up call for Tom. Fewell did nothing to adjust his defense during those games and came up with the 4-4-2-1 scheme that was supposd to stop the Ravens running attack, and we all know the exact opposite happened. Fewell has been outcoached, runs a scheme that doesn't benefit the players he has, and never takes responsibility for it. That last part is why I think he isn't being interviewed for head coaching jobs. When he blamed the players, who admitted they had no idea what they were supposed to be doing, after either the Falcons or Ravens loss (not sure which), that should of been a Red Flag to Coughlin. Outside of the takeaways, what can we say really worked for fewell this season?

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
I'm not upset Fewell is staying. Why would I be. In 3 years, the guy has DC had a
Top defense that had a terrible 8 minutes Not as good a defense as 2010 but got up to a Super Bowl caliber by the end This year his D had a bunch of turnovers, but overall he hurt his HC stock with the not as good as 2011 D. If that doesn't get fixed that he will never get to be a NFL head coach (unless he's holding out for THIS job).

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
How do you know Fewell is staying?
He is currently under contract, and has not been fired. That's all we know. A lot can happen in the next month.
The Playoffs are still going on - moving parts could be held up until league year ends. I'd keep an eye on what's happening in New Orleans - Gregg Williams has applied for reinstatement, as per January 2nd. If the Saints get the band back together - Sean Payton at Head Coach, Williams at Defensive Coordinator - Spags gets the boot and opens the door for a Giants return. A lot of his Position Coaches are still here.
In any event, I think I'll be the mob lawyer and caution everybody's getting excited here.
The order of this Defense needs to be "get healthy" and "get a middle linebacker". People are sick of hearing these excuses but the simple fact is Fewell's never had good health or been given a quality MLB. His D looks like a MASH unit by the time training camp ends.
Let it play out. Let them get healthy again and go after Rolando McClain, Rey Maualuga, Manti Te'o, Kevin Minter or any other MLB who can come in, play 3 downs and take ownership of this D. I'm no Fewell apologist but it's a proven scheme that funnels everything to the MLB and the WLB. GET STUDS IN THOSE POSITIONS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. And no - Mike Boley is not a stud LB in this league.
That said - I want Spags back. ;)

RE: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
they're not gonna fire him and he got an extension for one more year..
needless to say....we need pieces to liven up the Defensive side of the ball.
Osi wasn't a leader Tuck is on last legs Canty hurt LB's...hurt Secondary a few hurt
JPP and Brown were saving graces this year. JPP doubled because they could.
Webster wasn't hurt he just got AWFUL Diehl was hurt..but he was worse than Webster. and AB is..was..and always be hurt.
WE NEED YOUNG HUNGRY players...not over the hill OVERPAID from what happened a year ago. This is almost the same result after the 07 SB.
Fewell has one year left.

I would tend to agree with this but..Its not PF fault Osi was extended and TT was injured.Im not crazy about PF but look at the free agents like Rivers.the gamble on Austin etc.

It sounds like they just think nothing is really wrong.

Except of course for those who just love to complain. No offense, but there's too many excuses made for PF. I'm not one of those sky is falling fans (heck, i'm not advocating the firing of KG). IF this, IF that, IF whatever. If you gave me the '85 Bears D, I would be able to run that. The point is, no team is ever 100%. There are always holes to fill. PF has shown he can't do that. I'd like to see a new scheme.

I am way too old to wait another 10 to 15 years until we make it to the SB again.

From the way the fans are going, you'd wish they lost to Philly too. Then John Mara could pull another 8-8 is 4-12 rant and firing coordinators. Mara can't pull a 9-7 is 5-11 rant for 2012 because that exact record equaled a Super Bowl ring a year ago

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
From ESPN
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-yo...ting-2012-stats
A major reason for the Giants' failed title defense was the defense. The Giants allowed 6,134 yards for an average of 383.4 yards a game. Both were franchise records. In 2011, the defense surrendered 6,022 yards. The past two seasons are the only seasons in which the Giants have allowed 6,000 yards. The Giants finished the season ranked 31st in the NFL in total defense. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it is the first time the Giants’ defense was ranked second-to-last since 1966. The big play killed the Giants defense. It allowed 60 passes of 20 or more yards (fourth highest in the NFL) and a league-high 29 passes of at least 30 yards and 13 passes of 40 or more yards -- second most in the NFL. And yet despite all the yardage, the Giants surrendered 344 points which tied them for 12th in scoring defense. The Giants defense excelled in the red zone, allowing only 23 touchdowns on 50 opposing possessions in the red zone -- sixth-best in the NFL. And the Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35) and turnover differential (plus-14). The plus-14 is the Giants’ best turnover differential since 1997 when they were plus-25. The Giants' 21 interceptions were their most since 1997.

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
If it weren't for Osi's strip sacks and the secondary's ability to catch...Fewell would be long gone. Turnovers and that 6 game stretch last year are the only thing that has saved this unit from being the worst in the league over the past 3 years.

Re: Anyone else upset that Giants aren't bringing in a new DC?
I think Fewell is a terrible coordinator, and I think it speaks volumes that no one has interviewed him for a HC position this off season. His stock has dropped these last few years. Injuries are always the Giants excuse for him, but game in and game out, receivers are wide open and defenders look at each other after every big play with a "I thought you had him" look. I can't think of another team who runs his type of scheme who we would consider a good defensive team. I'm not wishing TC and Reese over-react like Jerry Jones, but their blind loyality to poor coordinators is frustrating.
