Giants sign Ryan Torain

"The Giants answered any questions you may have had in regards to the shortage at RB…..after signing Kregg Lumpkin earlier today (see below) the team signed former Washington Redskin Ryan Torain.

To make room for Torain on the roster, the team waived OL Selvish Capers, who will most likely clear waivers and be added back to the practice squad."

I think it was smart to go with younger backs over older veterans.  Hopefully, Wilson will step up big with his opportunity.  But regardless, neither Wilson or Bradshaw are the big backs you need in short yardage situations.

It's amazing and kind of sad how talented guys are sitting home without jobs.  It's a permanent recession for some of these guys.

Nice Highlights

Runs up...ala Jacobs
Has balance and fights
through tackles.
Seems to have good sense
of plays developing in front
to pick holes...coming.
CBs...don't have a chance of
arm tackling.

Not great burst it seemed but
with sense of opening..he takes
initiative.

Already...I'm liking the guy.

Where's the blocking video's on Blitz's
TY Shannanakins...sleeping again?

Re: Giants sign Ryan Torain

GM all. I covered Ryan at draft time and he was far down on my list of RB's. That being said you should see what the pats are doing with a kid who wasn't even on my list! He's got the most yardage of any draft pick I just can't remember his name.

Part of this growing old thing is you suddenly have memory failure it's not like you can't remember but certain things like my brothers new cell phone number in LA no matter how many times my wife screams it at me-- I just can't remember it.

The funny thing about Torain-- he can't pass block! So if you take Lumpkin & Torain and mold them together in a DNA scrambler-- you'd have a decent back.

Here is the skinny--

COACH SHANAHAN HAD RYAN AT DENVER!

Denver has  proud history of nailing mid round RB's in the draft so there actually was quite a bit of buzz surrounding Torain as he came to Bronco camp. He promptly dislocated his elbow.  COACH SHANNY WAS SO IMPRESSED HE MADE THIS COMPARISON:

"He's one of the most gifted running backs I've been around for a long time. He is very similar to Terrell Davis when he came in,"surprised Ironically it was on that very same day of the compliment that Torain was carted off the practice field.

Now at this point remember that Torain had missed a lot of college ball his final 7 games and the elbow and then he's ready to play finally and...

"I want to take up that big role that everyone is counting on and take it and run with it," Torain said. Well he ran. He ran all the way to WASHINGTON where coach Shanny was aware of his potential so starting job there right? No. Flash Forward to Washington DC.

The Washington Redskins have released third-year pro Ryan Torain, ending a perplexing season in which the running back struggled, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. .

Torain entered training camp as the favorite to start. But he broke his left hand during a training camp practice and Washington traded for Tim Hightower, who did well in the preseason. Torain never managed to rekindle the promise that he showed last season.

WOW TOUGH LUCK KID. Ankle in college. Elbow at Broncos and now hand.... he's the extremity nightmare! What's next lost toe due to harvester mishap? Bruised tongue?

In the fourth game of the season, with Hightower banged up, Torain rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries against the St. Louis Rams. But his production dropped off significantly after that.  Following the Week 5 bye, Torain gained only 22 yards on 10 carries against the Eagles, and hasn’t had a run longer than six yards since. He did run three yards to the ice bucket but that didn't count.

Since the Rams game, Torain has produced only 65 yards on 40 carries. Oooooph
What's that 1.7 a carry!redface

When asked about Torain’s ineffectiveness, Shanahan could offer little insight.

“It’s hard to say,” said Shanahan, who in 2008 drafted Torain in Denver and brought him to Washington last season. “ But what you look for is consistency at every position. The people that are consistent get more opportunities. If you’re not consistent, you don’t get as many opportunities to show us what you can do.”

Sixth-round pick Aldrick Robinson, a wide receiver, was promoted to the 53-man roster, filling Torain’s spot.~si

I really like this signing as I remember being impressed by him when he was with Washington.

Part of me wonders how much of his signing has to do with the fact that he knows the Washington playbook. Then again, that was 2 years ago. Its not like he was released last month.

I also wonder if the team has no confidence in Wilson after signing TWO running backs. We'll see. I cannot wait for Monday night.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.

I think signing two maybe more guarding against another injury or a setback to AB.

It's probably the lack of confidence of David Wilson.

Yup.

Let's see how long it takes Torian to learn the Giants' blocking schemes and get on the field.

No it's not lack of confidence in Wilson-- you can't go into a game with only 3 backs and all of them playing!
If anything it's lack of confidence in the other guy who's name I can't remember at the moment. Lumpkin yes! Still got it!!!
Lumpkin...  this is a Frankenstein approach to cobbling together a running game and Folks we need BRADSHAW FOR THE PLAYOFFS AND WE ALSO DON'T WANT TO SHOW THE REDSKINS EVERYTHING THIS GAME... SO STOP WISHING FOR MIRACLES: IT'S WILSON WILSON WILSON'S GAME TO SHINE!!!!! It's finally his chance don't let these mediocre signings take away from his moment. Remember David's game is like Birth Control when you forget about it-- YOU WISH YOU HAD IT!!!devil ~stoney

RE: Giants sign Ryan Torain

I think we made some good depth signings. I wouldn't count on seeing much of Torain or Lumpkin this week. Lumpkin might be added to the 47 actives initially because he can play special teams and catching the ball out of the backfield doesn't require a lot of coaching. I think Wilson will get his chance and if he impresses he will be the backup. If not, Torain and Lumpkin (for short yardage) are learning more every day and waiting in the wings. This is Wilson's chance and he better not "fumble" it.

RE: Giants sign Ryan Torain

I just hope that if Wilson is having a good game but then fumbles the ball once that Coughlin doesn't yank him out of the game and bench him for one of the other guys. That would just KILL Wilson's confidence. They need to keep him in the game, even if he makes a mistake or two.

Good teams rely on their stars,
Great teams rely on each other.
