Re: Former player sues after he's cut from HS basketball team

What is wrong with parents these days?  Children have been given this entitlement by their parents and I say, shame on the parents.  My father would have slapped my silly for wanting to sue for crap like this or even complain about playing time (this is also the same guy who would have slapped me for wanting to sell water by the bottle or coffee for 5 bucks a cup).  If you want playing time you have to earn it, period.  There was no entitlement for children in my family that is for certain.  Kids were kids and did what they were told, no vote no nothing except what dad said (or whoever the authority figure was).  That's it.  I went to a catholic school for a while and if I came home and cried about a priest or nun spanking me I would get spanked again for causing enough trouble for said priest or nun to spank me in the first place.  My parents did not run to the school and threaten with law suit or anything else for that matter.

Stuff like this is just crazy and hopefully will not get any credit in court.  Wow.

Kluwless started this crap...and now every player who was given participation awards as a kid, and never having to earn things - will sue.

And there are hundreds of thousands of lawyers who will take these cases and comtinue to clog up our legal system.

Rome is happening here.

Scroll down a bit in the comments section at the bottom of the page. His parents made a long comment, so they surely saw everyone else's comments and likes/dislikes. Yowzer!

his parents are just as clueless as a lot of people are these days. the First Amendment doesn't protect you from getting kicked off the basketball team. idiots.

won't do them much good. he got some publicity for gay rights but as far as everyone else is concerned the Vikings still cut him for football reasons only.

This is a gross oversimplification. He's not suing because he's didn't get enough playing time. He's suing because he believes that when he "exercised his 1st Amendment" right by complaining about playing time that he was cut without due process. He also believes that his initial loss in paying time was a retaliation for him missing a game due to a conflict with another school activity, although he was not forewarned that he would suffer a consequence for it.

Now, before anyone get's their panties in a bunch, I'm not commenting on whether or not I think he has a case. I'd need to know more about the facts. However, to generate clicks this is clearly being inaccurately portrayed as a kid who didn't get enough playing time so he sued. There's more to it than that and if we want to be intellectually honest about it and have a legitimate discussion it's incumbent upon us to see the nuance.

Re: Former player sues after he's cut from HS basketball team

Here in Southern California this is old news.

At the HS where I work we had a terrific football coach, good teacher, just a nice man...  the football "boosters" pushed out because the President's son wasn't getting enough "play time" so...they got a new coach and proceeded to lose every game the next season...but hey, dad got what he wanted.  Our old coach went on to a new school and lost in southern section CIF final (forget which division-this was about three years ago)

Last year our basketball coach was being sued by a parent because his son wasn't getting enough PT.  This is a coach who won their CIF division pretty much every year, and a state title six years ago.

Our track program doesn't cut anyone - we have 300 + on our team each year....fortunately half of them drop out after the team picture...seriously.

We've done this to kids by rewarding mediocrity.

he IS suing in part because of a lack of playing time. it's in the complaint. the other part is the Twitter issue.

This is a great point.

Sometimes I think our society is going to ****.

Sometimes I think our society only seems like it is going to **** thanks to the 24-hour news cycle and "headlines" that don't accurately portray the actual story in an effort to generate clicks or boost ratings.

It is probably a combination of both and one exacerbates the other over and over and over again.
