Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

Do you have any opinions about the Vikings that a lot of fans would disagree with?

I seem to have a lot of them but here's my top 5:

1) Bridgewater should either be our starter or our #3 QB. I don't want to see the Vikings start Cassel the first 6 games, go 1-5, and then bring in Bridgewater when the season is already lost. Screw that, it's a hopeless situation with no chance to turn things around. If we're not going to start Bridgewater at the beginning of the season then he should be our #3 QB all year learning so he can take over as the starter in 2015. On the other hand if we start him day 1 then he should start for at least 2 years unless injured.

2) Our new stadium needs a retractable roof. I don't care if the new stadium we're building allows light in or how cool it looks from outside. Real football is played outdoors (45 of 48 SB champions were outdoor teams). It's embarrassing to watch the Vikings play indoors like a bunch of *******. Man up and put a retractable roof on it before it's too late. It's not a coincidence we haven't been to the Superbowl in over 30 years since we started playing indoors.

3) Not sold on Norv Turner as the solution. I know he's a big name in football but if you look at his track record it makes you question some things. The Vikings are the 6th team he's coached over the past 13 years. How is that even possible? I hope things work out and he should easily be an upgrade over Musgrave but I'm not sure if he's the answer.

4) Our new uniforms are an improvement over the horrible uniforms we wore a couple of years ago but our throwbacks are way better. Simply put our throwback jerseys are the best uniform in any sport period. It's a huge mistake not to wear them every game. They are bada$$.

5) I don't like the changes to our Norseman logo. I know the changes were supposed to be minor but I think they really messed it up. As a result I go out of my way to find Vikings gear that has our old logo on it because I can't stand our new one.

1. Chilly was a decent head coach.

2. Signing Favre was a mistake.

tongue

how did they screw up the norseman logo? the only thing i prefer on the old logo is the shading on the horns.

1.  The new uniforms are terrible.  We have the worst uniforms in the league.  Just drop the stupid shoulder stripe and go with our practice uniforms.

2.  I am not sold that our defense will be much if any better.  Way too many question marks.

3.  Not sold at all on Barr.  I see journeyman in his future.

Re: Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

Oh, yes, I have a lot of opinions that most fans ridicule me for:

1. I think Bridgewater is going to be a complete bust and I feel that we wasted two draft picks on him.

2. I think Ponder has a very good chance of winning the starting job in TC. On that same note, I think that Cassel is an awful QB and is worse than Ponder by a long shot. I don't care that Cassel looks more confident in games - that doesn't mean squat when he doesn't put points on the board - he had a lower ppg average than Ponder last year and they nearly tied for interceptions even though Cassel played less games than Ponder. Also, the way Cassel throws the ball bugs me more than most people. Every time one of his passes gets batted down I want to do this - banghead - which ends up giving me a headache by the end of the game. I'm going to need a lot of aspirin if he ends up winning the starting job.

3. I think Greg Jennings is a jerk, a diva and isn't a very good receiver. I hate that we always take Green Bay's leftovers (including Farve). I read that he cheats on his wife (not sure if it's true but the sources sounded legit) plus I thought he looked like a spoiled brat when he threw that temper tantrum on the sidelines during the final minutes of the Redskins game. When people start talking about how he's a good role model and they are glad we got him, I just roll my eyes. rolleyes Side note: I thought it was pretty funny when the Packer fans were booing him in GB.

4. The new uniforms are hideous. The color of the helmet doesn't match the color of the uniform and it drives me nuts (supposedly, they are the same color but the light reflects off them differently making them look like different colors) plus the font is so bad that it's almost impossible to read the names/numbers.

5. I think Rick Speilman is a good GM. He's done a few things that I didn't agree with but, overall, I think he's done a good job picking up the right guys in the draft and free agency. I also don't think picking Ponder in the 2011 draft was a mistake - it was a learning experience (at least I hope we learned from it).

Historically, the Vikings are losers.
Wilf is a shyster.
Randy Moss is a good human being.
I'm in an abusive relationship with the Minnesota Vikings.

Kalil not as good as his draft position. Could have taken an LT later with similar results.

Couldn't agree more about the new uniforms.  What really gets my goat is the "grape" shade of purple the ownership have seemingly embraced.  We are walking Barnies once again.  Go deep, dark purple (as our practice unis are closer to) and make us look cool intimidating true VIKINGS!

Zygi I hope your listening.  New stadium new design.  Please........

Remember when Coke came out with New Coke? Everybody went out and bought some. It wasn't as good as the old version. So Coke brought back the Original and of course everybody had to buy some since they missed it.
Maybe the Vikings are playing that game. Marketing ploy?

1. AD is not "best all time".  He has a LONG ways to go to get even close to that.
2. Zimmer is not a defensive God, he is "ok". The defensive expectations are being drastically over blown.
3. Bridgewater, Barr, eh. Horrible first round.

If our unpopular opinions can be addressed to the past,

I've always believed that Robert Smith was an overrated RB, one that should have been replaced in order to field a more complete team in the late 90's..  Guy was fast, but that was about it.

Re: Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

Seems like the popular consensus is that we've signed football coach gods and we should be a shoe in for a top 5 offense and top 5 defense. I think our offense will be about the same as last year in terms of overall production and our defense will be moderately better (15-25). I like our coaches, but it's not as easy as many make it out to be and it will take time, especially when we're depending on so many young inexperienced guys.

AD is overrated ... for the price we pay for him. AD is amazing and will be a shoe-in for the hall of fame, and is a great face of the franchise, but there are a lot of other RBs that are right in his neighborhood of overall production for a lot less money. The second highest RB makes $5M a year less than AD. You could buy a borderline pro bowl WR, and a top 10 RB for AD's salary, plus get picks if you could trade him.

The other RBs are so hit or miss and up and down.

When is the last time we went into a season and wondered if our RB would have a decent year or not? Other teams get 1 or 2 good years intermingled with sporadic results.

Chad Greenway is way overrated, and has been for some time now.

Funny, I've always thought that Robert was one of the most underrated players in Viking history. IMO, the 1998 team for instance, would not have been as good with almost any other running back of the time. He had a high gear that was probably the best of any RB I've seen and he was surprisingly tough running the ball inside. Two things kept him from being a 10,000 yard career rusher and potential HOFer -- booze and injuries.

Re: Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

1) Playing outdoors at a subpar (by NFL standards) stadium the next two years is going to affect the team more than expected and not in a good way. The novalty of playing outside will be old to fans by the time the weather turns cold year two, if not sooner.

2) When you have a RB like Peterson and QBs like the Vikes have had the last couple years, the offense is going to be fairly predictable. That doesn't mean the coaches are idiots. It's just the reality of a run heavy offense. Way to much blame sent Childress and Musgrave's way. Not that either were great, and I had no problem with letting either of them go. But when you have AP, you feed AP. Since he's never looked comfortable pass catching, it's going to look very bland. And being overly creative when teams are stacking the line like they were is a good way to have negative plays.

3) I suspect our defense is going to be very hit and miss this year, and not just game to game, but often play to play. There's going to be signs of hope, but completely changing schemes takes time.

Re: Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

We should trade, or cut, every player age 30 or older no matter how good they are. Greenway, AD (next year), Jennings, etc. I'd rather cut someone a year or two before their decline, and be forced to develop their young replacement, than keep them on the roster a year too long.

Greenway deserves more credit than stated by detractors.
and,
The historical Vikings were godless heathens, and ruthless plunderers (pure Anglo-Saxon biased history, as if they should talk).

Re: Unpopular opinions about the Vikings

1. Tarkenton is overrated by most fans now, and would not even start in today's game.  Oh yeah, he's a jerk too.

2. The best RB the Vikes have ever had after Adrian Peterson is not Chuck Foreman, or Robert Smith, but Terry Allen.

3. The new stadium looks hideous. (Granted it will be much better than the MetroDump)

4. The Vikings will go 11-5 this year.
