AFC East (Dolphins) salary cap

AFC East (Dolphins) salary cap

Free agency begins in less than two months. Teams around the league are planning their strategies and figuring out which big names to pursue.

But where teams stand with the $120-million salary cap next season will be an indicator of which will be aggressive and which won't.

Let's take an early look at the projected 2012 cap numbers in the AFC East:

Buffalo Bills (6-10)

Projected cap: $105.5 million

Key free agents: WR Steve Johnson, TE Scott Chandler, K Rian Lindell

Analysis: The Bills are looking pretty good entering free agency. General manager Buddy Nix says the team will spend to the cap this year. The first order of business is deciding on Johnson's future. The two sides are still a ways apart and I think it's a 50-50 proposition. With or without Johnson, Buffalo has the space to acquire impact players. We mentionedHouston Texans defensive end/linebacker and unrestricted free agent Mario Williams as a possibility to help the Bills' pass rush. But getting Williams -- or any top free agent -- to come to Buffalo will be a tough sell.

Miami Dolphins (6-10)

Projected cap: $114.3 million

Key free agents: DT Paul Soliai, G Vernon Carey, QB Chad Henne

Analysis: The Dolphins are in decent (but not great) shape with the cap. There will be an interesting dynamic in Miami to keep an eye on this offseason. Usually when a new coach comes in, there is huge turnover in the coach's first season. But that probably won't happen with general manager Jeff Ireland still in charge of the 53-man roster. Ireland is not going to cut many of the players he helped bring to Miami. But the Dolphins would have to do something if they want to make enough room to make a splash for a big free agent.Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn is a good example.

New England Patriots (13-3)

Projected cap: $99.9 million

Key free agents: WR Wes Welker, DE Andre Carter, WR Deion Branch

Analysis: It's amazing that the best team in the AFC East also is in the best shape with the cap. The Patriots have done a masterful job and have plenty of money to spend in free agency if they choose. A big chunk of it will go to Welker, who is due for a nice payday. New England won't let Welker slip away. The Patriots also have the tools to acquire defensive help in free agency, as well as sign their two first-round picks and two second-round picks in the draft. The Patriots are in position to be a major force again next season.

New York Jets (8-8)

Projected cap: $125 million

Key free agents: WR Plaxico Burress, DT Sione Pouha, S Jim Leonhard

Analysis: The Jets are the only AFC East team projected to be over the cap. This was a team built to win now and it didn't work out; now New York has to make some trimmings on the roster if it wants to do anything in free agency. There's a good chance Burress and Leonhard won't return. Pouha is a good player and could come back at the right price. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson also is a free agent. But his role was drastically reduced this past season and it's unlikely he will return. Tomlinson is contemplating retirement.

I apologize for going off-topic here, MDF.....but speaking of the Jets.....

Did any of y'all catch this week's Inside The NFL interview with LaDanian?
O.M.F.G.

My jaw was on the floor! I could NOT believe he was SO open about what happened toward the end of their season.
Obviously, he ain't gonna be there this year.

Check it out this weekend if ya get a minute (I think it comes on again @ 10p tonight - on Showtime):

LOL Mrs...

So to get back on subject regarding the cap space. I believe if we can get Jake and Big Paul to sign long term deals, we could actually create another 10 mil in cap space. We are going to need the space to bring in the wr's we will need to run this new offense.
Thank you for a great season Shockers!

RE: AFC East (Dolphins) salary cap

Paul Soliai was paid last year more than he is worth, if we could of signed him to a decent contract we would of. It will be interesting to see if anyone gets a new contract to create cap space, Long the most obvious choise has been battling injures which I suspect would put him in doubt, Marshall no chance in hell, Dansby showed up out of shape last year, thats not what you want to see, Burnett to new. Have to wait to see what kind of defense we run, If its a 4-3 Wake could be trade bait, I don't see a spot for him but other's disagree, maybe a 3rd down pass rusher. I still think we have more wholes on both sides of the ball than most people are willing to admitt. Wouldn't surprise me if Ireland didn't tryed to trade our 8th or 9th pick like Parcells did in 2010 and try for a 2 for 1. I do have a feeling if we do get our quarterback it will be Flynn and thats only if the Packers don't want more than a 2nd round pick. His agent will see he does get paid 7-8-9 mil a year with a nice siging bonus 15-20 mil, and thats only if Philbin checks off on it. Kid over at the phinsider has a draft up and his pick number 7 was interesting, I imagine the guy had to do something pretty awful to fall that far but it still peaked my interest first round talent in the 7th round. How New England is so far under the cap puzzles me concidering the pay Brady big bucks....Working with young players from the draft I quess..It would be nice if we diddn't have to go to FA as much as we do, but thats what built the better part of this team.

RE: AFC East (Dolphins) salary cap

Carrying Over Room. A Club may "carry over" Room from one League Year to the following League Year by submitting notice in writing signed by the owner to the NFL no later than fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the next League Year indicating the maximum amount of Room that the Club wishes to carry over. The NFL shall promptly provide a copy of any such notice to the NFLPA. The amount of Room carried over will be adjusted downward based on the final Room available after the year-end reconciliation.

we were about $9 million below the cap in 2011, and so if that gets carried over, we'll be about $14.4 million under the 2012 salary cap.

What deadwood? Carey and Columbo are free agents, Incognito was great last year, Pouncey is promising, and Feinga, Jerry, Barker, and Murtha are dirt cheap.

Garner, maybe, at $1.4 mil could go but his depth is invaluable. Clearly Long has a huge contract that maybe could be restructured, but deadwood? Seeing as he's made the pro-bowl every year of his career, I certainly wouldn't call him deadwood.

RE: AFC East (Dolphins) salary cap

This should be interesting. If Ross gets what he wants Peyton should eat up most of if not all of our cap space. There are plenty of guys on this team who should be restructuring there deals and it will show what type of players we have on this team when we see who takes the pay cut and who says no. My opininion is guys like Jake Long, Dansby, and Bell will take a pay cut to help us out. I can't see Marshall giving up any money unless its going directly torwards a QB.

sorry I FORGOT columbo was a f.a. he and Vernon Carey were the two players that i thought were our weakest links. i wished we could cut Daniel Thomas and draft Rb Richardson and Keep Hilliard who I 've grown fond of.

Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas are just fine at RBs.

If we don't get Manning, gotta try and draft a top QB.

Daniel Thomas has done more to impress me than Lex Hilliard. Not sure I understand that thinking.

Lex Hilliard is what he is. He's a marginal player that gets a handful of carries a year.

I think he is an underutilized true power HB..  Too many times last year Daniel Thomas who is supposed to be our Goal line and short yardage RB would get Stuffed.  We used Lex to punch it in once but then we cut Polite so Lex Had to become our Blocking FB and Thomas performed Poorly punching it in from a yard out IMO he seems afraid to run Full speed into the line. I dont see what use Thomas is to us really He is not a power back and he's not a burner he is in-between.

I dont know Lex Hilliard has great Push and usually gets 2 yards or more after contact but I really missed Ronnie Brown around the Goal line.. If the eagles cut him and we can get him for dirt cheap we have to pull the trigger.. RB was money If we had the ball on at least the 2 and if he got a head of steam would always get the extra 2 yards or more after contact.

I think at this point in his career being a Backup and Goal line  RB for Brown is something he can handle and i would love to see him back here.

My Wishlist:
Restructure- Bell, Long,

Resign-
Solai to a long term deal, Resign Merling, Murtha, Slaton, Francis, Hilliard

Sign- Manningham/Meachem , Ronnie Brown,Anthony Collins RT, Wesley Woodyard OLB..

Trade-Brian Hartline, Daniel thomas, Franchise Kendall Langford then dangle  him for draft picks..

Draft- Robert Griffin thats it... If we have any leftover picks i would take a TE..

Lex Hilliard is a paper tiger. He hits a hole hard but he doesn't break any tackles. He's like Ricky the last couple of years...
