Patriots @ Dolphins 12-6-09 1pm CBS Game Thread

Dolphins vs Patriots: Prediction Time

As we do this time every week, let's check out a few "expert" picks for this week's game. But keep in mind that all 12 of the "expert picks" last week were wrong. Everyone picked the Dolphins. Didn't work out too well, did it? What about this week?

Chris Mortensen - NEAdam Schefter - NERon Jaworski - NE
Tom Jackson - MiaMike Ditka - NEPeter King - NE
PFT - NEJason Cole - NECharles Robinson - NE
Pete Prisco - NEHarmon Forecast - NEClark Judge - NE

To be honest, I'm a bit surprised by how much "love" the Dolphins are getting. While only Tom Jackson was willing to pick the Dolphins, several of the "experts" above made sure to point out that they think it's going to be a close game and that they almost went the other way with their pick.

Peter King acknowledges that he "almost went the other way" because he thinks the Dolphins will pressure Tom Brady. But in the end, he took the Pats to win by three. ProFootballTalk calls this game a "dangerous game" for the Pats - but also take the Pats to win by three. And Pete Prisco, a famed Dolphin-hater, also takes the Pats to win by only three.

I, too, think that this game will be very close. I see it coming down to the fourth quarter - which has proven to be a problem for the Dolphins. If the Dolphins can put together a full 60 minutes, execute offensively, and not collapse in the fourth quarter, I give them a decent shot to win. But they have to pressure Brady and they have to create some big plays of their own on offense.

Porter getting sacks, clamming up

By The Associated Press 10 hours, 1 minute ago

Joey Porter(notes) has quietly rediscovered his knack for sacks.

Hampered by a leg injury, the 2008 AFC leader totaled only 2 1/2 sacks in the first nine games. He has 4 1/2 sacks in the past two games to lead the Miami Dolphins with seven, but he’s still slowed by the injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against New England.

While Porter’s productivity has improved, his usual bluster has been missing. Miffed at the media for reasons unclear, he gave mostly cryptic answers in recent interviews. He was expansive this week only when asked about athletes being in a fish bowl.

“We made ourselves too accessible to you,” Porter said. “It backfires on the athlete. We don’t get to write a story about y’all. An athlete makes a mistake, everybody wants to write about it. It’s a one-way street, like it has always been.”

Was Porter referring to Tiger Woods?

“I’m not going to have a comment on that,” Porter said. “It has nothing to do with me.”

dolphins vs pats 1pm est on cbs pre and post thoughts

Dolphins have one last shot to stay in AFC East race

In Brief

» Last meeting: In Week 9, the Patriots held off the visiting Dolphins, 27-17.
» Streaks: The Patriots have won four of the past five, but trail the overall series, 49-39, including the playoffs.
» Last week: New England went into New Orleans and left with a meager 38-17 loss. ... Miami faltered down the stretch and was beaten by Buffalo, 31-14.

Henne has been remarkably consistent (he has 17 completions and between 172 and 175 passing yards in three consecutive games), but he needs to up his production for the Dolphins to have a chance against an explosive Patriots team.

Joey Porter making his presence felt: Prior to getting shut out in his first game against the Patriots this year, Porter had been on a roll vs. New England, with eight sacks in his last four outings. He talked plenty of trash before getting blanked in the Week 9 meeting, and it is on him to come up big this time around.

Wes Welker's production: When Welker is heavily involved in the Patriots' game plan, they are far more dangerous. In fact, New England is 4-0 this season when Welker has at least 100 yards receiving, and only 2-3 when he doesn't (this does not include two games Welker missed). After a tough game against the Saints, in which Welker was held to a season-low 32 yards, look for the Patriots to get him involved early and often.

Did you know?

Re: Patriots @ Dolphins Game thread 12-6-09

When the New England Patriots left for Miami on Saturday, several injured players stayed behind, their status for Sunday's game necessarily downgraded to out.

Per Tom Curran of Comcast's CSNNE.com, tackle Sebastian Vollmer, cornerback Shawn Springs, and running back Fred Taylor will not play.

Vollmer has been suffering from a concussion, and the offensive line has been suffering without the rookie, who grabbed hold of the starting job after Matt Light was injured.  Light is now back, but he's not the same as he used to be.

Taylor has been out more two-plus months with an ankle injury, and he had been listed as doubtful for Sunday's game.  The only good news for him of late is that he returned to practice on Friday.

Springs officially was probable with a knee injury -- his absence likely is related to performance.

Miami Dolphins: (Updated) Jake Grove still not practicing, Smiley to start?
> Posted by Mike Berardino on December 4, 2009 11:57 AM

Well, it's not looking good at all for Miami Dolphins center Jake Grove to play Sunday against New England and massive NT Vince Wilfork (right, looking goofy).Wilfork

As soon as team stretching ended this morning in the practice bubble, Grove walked slowly and solemnly toward the stationary exercise bike he's been riding for the past two weeks.

Grove's high left ankle sprain has progressed this week, according to Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, but with Grove unable to practice since suffering the injury at Carolina on Nov. 19, you can pretty much bank on Joe Berger starting at center for the second straight week.

I asked Sparano on Thursday if he would be comfortable "trusting the player" if Grove says he can go this week. That's the phrase Sparano used earlier this year when talking about how to handle Joey Porter's hamstring as it kept him out of practice.

"I got to be honest, I’m a little afraid of that," Sparano said. "I’m not tipping my hand one way or the other. I’m just afraid of that in my experience with offensive linemen. They have a hard job in there, none harder than this week with the guy [Wilfork] that will be playing on the other side.

"If you don’t know whether or not a guy can anchor and those things and you don’t see it in practice ... I have another day of practice [Friday] and I’ll take a look at him out there and if he’s going to do something and we’ll go from there."

Well, Grove didn't do much of anything, so look for Berger, in whom Sparano has expressed great confidence despite his limited game experience.

The best news this morning might be the return of Justin Smiley to the starting lineup. Smiley, who has missed three straight starts as he continues to monitor shoulder woes, worked with the first unit during the early portion of Friday's drills. The intriguing part was Nate Garner, his replacement, flipped over to right guard as Donald Thomas slipped back to second team.

This was the arrangement for several series on Sunday at Buffalo, but Thomas hasn't been listed on the injury report all year, to the best of my knowledge, and he seems to be effective enough to keep his starting role. Maybe Garner really has come on that strong, although I must point out it appeared Garner, pulling from the left side, had a chance to block a blitzing Paul Posluszny and failed to do so on that Ricky Williams end zone interception in Buffalo we're still obsessing about.

If Posluszny gets picked up -- Garner blocked the end instead as No. 51 raced by untouched to hit Ricky in the chest -- maybe Ricky gets enough on that ball to reach Joey Haynos in the back of the end zone. Of course, Haynos appeared to be too shallow on that route as well, allowing two Bills to be in the coverage area.

Anyway, it would be big to get Smiley back into the starting lineup.

Also this morning, noticed Joey Porter was taking things pretty easy as he continues to nurse those hamstring/knee issues that aren't listed on the injury report. When it was time to run from one side of the bubble to the other -- everybody was jogging -- Porter walked slowly.

No wonder he was in such a dour mood while spending a whopping 3 1/2 minutes with the local media on Wednesday.

Just one Dolphins player was absent from Friday's abbreviated practice: outside linebacker Quentin Moses. Should find out the reason for that once Sparano meets the media around 1:30 this afternoon.

UPDATE 1:59 P.M.: Just finished up with Sparano, who confirmed Jake Grove did not practice but did not rule him out for this game. Grove did not appear in the locker room during open media time, but both Jake Long and Joe Berger answered questions as though Berger would be starting again on Sunday.

The coach also played it close to the vest on Smiley, saying only "We'll see" when asked if he would start at left guard ahead of Nate Garner. Sparano did make it clear that the reason Donald Thomas is being rotated of late isn't so much about performance as "preservation" for a young player going through his first full season.

Porter didn't practice either, Sparano said.

"I rested him," Sparano said, without saying why.

As for Moses, he missed practice with a "personal family issue."

Dolphins in all-white today due to time change...
target="_blank">www.thesunchronicle.com/artic...ts/6555573.txt

FOXBORO - When NBC dropped the Patriots-Dolphins game from its Sunday Night Football lineup and handed it back to CBS as an afternoon tilt, it also made Donnie Brocher's life a little more hectic.

Brocher, the Patriots' long-time equipment manager, had to pack an entirely different set of uniforms for the trip to LandShark Stadium this weekend.

This is the last of the "throwback" games, part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the American Football League. All season long, the eight original AFL franchises have chosen games in which to wear replica uniforms representative of an important period in the franchise's AFL history.

The Patriots chose to replicate their 1963 uniforms, symbolic of their participation in that year's AFL championship game against San Diego. It would take another 22 years for the Patriots to make another championship game (Super Bowl XX) and another 16 after that for them to win one (Super Bowl XXXVI).

Although Miami was not an original AFL franchise, entering the league in 1966, the Patriots chose this Sunday's trip there as the last appearance of the throwbacks and the Pat Patriot-adorned helmets. They were originally to wear the white uniforms (previously worn in Denver) when the game was scheduled at night. Now that the game is a 1 p.m. start, the Dolphins have chosen to wear their sunlight-reflecting white jerseys at home. So, Brocher and his staff have rescued the red shirts (worn against Buffalo and Tennessee) and will have them in the cargo hold of the charter for the flight to Miami.

The Patriots are 2-0 in the red throwbacks, and 0-1 in the whites.

"I think it's fun to wear something different," tight end Benjamin Watson said. "It's always fun to put on a different costume and go out and play."

Channing Crowder plans on holding his tongue
Linebacker remembers fine last year for what he says was hurting Matt Light's feelings

DAVIE -- An injury kept linebacker Channing Crowder from playing in the Dolphins' first game against the Patriots, preventing him from getting another shot at his on-field rival, tackle Matt Light.

But ahead of Sunday's clash, Crowder made it clear he thinks his $15,000 fine after their last confrontation was not warranted.

Crowder said he received a fine for what he said was simply "talking" on the field last season, and he is eager to avoid another fine, even if it means changing his personality for one game.

"I didn't think guys get in trouble for talking, I guess it's just with the Patriots," Crowder said. "If you play the Patriots, you're not allowed to talk, I guess, or else you get fined $15,000."

Crowder said Light "called the NFL to tell them I hurt his feelings" after an on-field scuffle last November in which Light attacked Crowder, who lost his helmet during the play. After the confrontation, Patriots players accused Crowder of going after Light's head during the course of the game.

Crowder, who has one sack and 42 tackles in nine games since returning from injury, said he didn't know if he could "play quiet" to avoid another fine but said he will try. Crowder is known for his boisterous on- and off-field demeanor.

"I'll just be quiet and smile at people," he joked.
