Preseason vs St Louis Rams - Game Thread -Thurs 8/28 7PM Eastern

St. Louis Rams Vs. Miami Dolphins: Five Things To Watch

http://phinphanatic.com/2014/08/26/st-louis-rams-vs-miami-dolphins-five-things-watch/

This Thursday, the St. Louis Rams travel to South Beach to take on the Miami Dolphins for their final preseason contest of the year.  Here are my five things to watch for heading into the final game before the Dolphins open week 1 against the New England Patriots.

1. Can the Miami offense bounce back?

PhinPhanatic site editor Brian Miller recently wrote an article discussing HC JoePhilbin’s disappointment with the Dolphins’ first team offense.  I know for a fact Joe Philbin isn’t the only one disappointed, seeing that the Dolphins’ offense against the Cowboys was abysmal.  Three points in five drives, against a defense that was notorious for giving up large quantities of points last year?  Come on Bill Lazor, you have exactly one game to turn this offense around before playing against an AFC elite team in the New England Patriots.  I will be watching closely to see if the ‘Fins can bounce back on offense, and how well Ryan Tannehill plays after a disappointing last game.  We may not see much of the first teamers, but that doesn’t mean they can’t come out clicking early.

2.  The end of the corner back battle.

Brent Grimes is a lock at one of the CB spots.  The other side is still up for grabs.  The main three competitors are Will DavisJamar Taylor and Cortland Finnegan.  Keep an eye on who gains the edge in this game.  Personally, I like either Taylor or Davis for the job.  On a side note, the Dolphins made the right choice last season in letting Dmitri Patterson go.  The former ‘Phins CB has been suspended by the Jets for completely missing their last preseason game.

3.  The Rams QB conundrum.

It has been nothing short of a nightmare of a preseason for the St. Louis Rams, who just lost their franchise QB Sam Bradford to a season-ending ACL injury.  His replacement?  Thirty-four year old Shaun Hill.  The Dolphins have a very able backup in Matt Moore, who has also been a starter multiple times in his career.  He may be a better option for the Rams for an entire season.  This is all complete speculation, but it is still something to keep an eye on entering this game.

4. Running backs eyeing a final roster spot.

After a fantastic first preseason appearance, Knowshon Moreno has gone from future bust to competing with Lamar Miller for the starting role.  Behind those two, Miami has a plethora of backs that they will have to weed out to find their magic number in the 53 men who make the roster.  In the mix is Orleans Darkwa, Damien Williams, Daniel Thomas and Mike Gillislee.  This final game could be the nail in the coffin for one or more of these guys.

5.  The continuation of pressure on the QB.

A highlight of Miami’s win over the Cowboys was Olivier Vernon and Cameron Wake’s domination over the Cowboy’s offensive line.  Those two rushers had a field day, and DC Kevin Coyle kept them coming.  With Dion Jordan one game away from beginning his suspension, I am curious to see how Coyle plans on continuing the defense’s recent assault on the opposing QB.  I love it, and I hope it continues against the Rams and former ‘Phins lineman Jake Long.

FINS UP!

Its promising to know that Miami has 4 starting caliber CB's. Curious how Aiken is doing as well. And good for Jamar Taylor bouncing back after not even making the travel team last year.

RB Orleans Darkwa? I've always thought of myself as a stupid of all things Dolphins, but gotta say hadn't heard this player

Darkwa had a pretty nice game vs Dallas in the 2nd half.   6 carries for 70 yards and a TD, one of the carries being for 53 yards  He also caught 3 passes for 24 yards and caught a 2 pt conversion.

Re: Preseason vs St Louis Rams - Game Thread -Thurs 8/28 7PM Eas

Don't know what the guy who runs Phinphanatic hopes to see this game.

1. Tannehill and the 1st string offense may not see the field if they do it's only for a couple of play's there going to try to not get anyone hurt, How long the O-line goes may be a different story. Moore again will get to show his ware's and they have been impressive this pre-season, I have to say I was down on him for skating the last 2 years, maybe FA next year got him to pick it up, maybe Lazor's offense???? don't really know or care as long as he is playing a well as he is.

2. Cornerback battle been over for a while, Grimes and Finnegan locked them up early, I will say that Davis has jumped Taylor and will play outside moving Finnegan inside when needed. Taylor hasn't looked bad he is just not as aggressive as Davis.

3. RB - doubt we see much of Moreno, may see Miller as he still needs work on finding the right hole. Williams looks like a lock at 4th RB more for his work in practice than what he has done in game. Gillislee on IR so need to decide on him right now.. last spot could come down to Thomas, Thigpen, Darkwa. It's going to be interesting to see Thomas and Darkwa go at this game, may be for not if Philbin doesn't feel comfortable with punt and kickoff returners. Darkwa definitely a candidate for the practice squad if he's not poached.

4. Rams QB - who cares...

5. Pressure on there QB ... Coyle deserves a lot of credit along with Vernon and Wake for the blitzing linebackers... Wheeler and McCoy both added pressure.

A "stupid of all things Dolphins"?  You said it, not me.

So I'm to assume that you didn't watch the game last week?  Darkwa was our leading rusher and scored a TD...

Stephen Ross...ur an assclown.
Sell the Dolphins immediately before you completely wreck this franchise.

Smartphones aren't so smart if they auto-correct a real word.  That's a glaring indictment on the phone manufacturers.

laugh.gif  If I were to guess I'd say he meant  "Auto-fill"  which predicts the word you're typing and if you're not careful and don't watch what it guessed, it can be one of the worst most embarrassing inventions ever created.  Thus why I turned mine off!!!  Fool me once.....

Orleans Darkwa would be my preference to keep out of Thomas, Gillislee, Thigpen. But Dolphins need to find someone reliable to return punts, kickoff's I think Wallace should take.

There's no doubt in my mind Thomas can come out and look absolutely great for a game, then disappear for 2 or 3 during the regular season when we need him, Darkwa has shown some ability, keep him around a while.

RB's should be Moreno, Miller, Williams, Darkwa

You really have to give credit to Hickey for finding as many talented undrafted FA with big talent, was the better part of his draft... I never seen anyone find the talent on the backend of a draft it is truly amazing. RB Williams, Darkwa LB McCoy T •Anthony Johnson, TE Gator Hoskins, WR Damian Williams

Oliver Vernon going against Jake Long going to be interesting, Long coming back from knee surgery was not at his best last week and let defender in to hammer Sam Bradford.

Does Philbin looking at the poor performance last week by the 1st string offense start most of the guy's and leave them in a while risking injury going into the 1st week of the regular season????? If he does, does it mean he doesn't have a lot of confidence in them?

I would play the starters ONE series, then OUT they come.

Hopefully on offense, it will be a quick strike TD; and for the D, a three and out with TWO sacks!!!!!!!tongue

Game time - looks like starter except Dallas Thomas? though he lost he job to Shelly Smith guess he got it back...will sit

The rest of the starting offense against St. Louis will include quarterback Matt Moore; running back Daniel Thomas; wide receivers Damian Williams, Rishard Matthews and Jarvis Landry; tight end Dion Sims; and offensive linemen Jason Fox (left tackle), David Arkin (left guard), Sam Brenner (center) and Nate Garner (right tackle).

might have to look really hard to see what you want to here...

The starting defense will have Tevin Mims at left defensive end; Anthony Johnson and Kamal Johnson at defensive tackle; Dion Jordan at right defensive end; Chris McCain , Jason Trusnik and Jelani Jenkins at linebacker; Jamar Taylor and Will Davis at cornerback; and Michael Thomas and Don Jones at safety.

Yes!!!  Although, I'd rather him not play too much tonight, we know he's got the goods.  I'm sure it's good for experience and all but......I don't want bad to the bone breaking tackles to be said any other way by the end of the night regarding bad and breaking and bones.

1st drive stalls - well Moore and Landry did their jobs. With some scrubs playing against some scrubs but I gotta say Landry is the real deal - just a player. Don't know where we will go next year for speed if this Wallace experiment doesn't work out, but we definitely have a WR in Landry. Would love to have seen Hyde here with that pick but we did get a player. Do not want to see him returning kicks any more though!

Kickers don't always get a lot of love, but we need to make sure we keep Fields paid and happy. Absolutely one of the best I have ever seen.

Jordan Tripp is down. Can't believe we let them out of the endzone when we had them backed up that badly.

Re: Preseason vs St Louis Rams - Game Thread -Thurs 8/28 7PM Eas

I remember hearing someone complaining when we paid fields... Fields stops the balls forward progress on the 1 doesn't get any better.

There getting to much pressure on Moore and the running back starting to have a hard time.

Were starting not to get any pressure on them...WTH

our 2nd and 3rd string O-lineman still seem lacking, anyone complaining when we draft more over the next couple years needs to pop in this tape..

there QB has enough time to throw just making bad throws 3-0 Rams
