Jamar Taylor almost quit

Jamar Taylor almost quit

There were high hopes for cornerback Jamar Taylor last season after the Dolphins used a second-round draft pick on the former Boise State star.

But it was a nightmarish season for Taylor. He suffered through hernia and groin injuries and then was buried on the depth chart when he was healthy. He played just 45 snaps.

Apparently it was so bad that Taylor considered quitting.

Taylor, who will compete with veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan (and possibly second-year CB Will Davis) for a starting job, opened up to the Idaho Statesman about his rough rookie year.

“It was to the point last year I thought I was done playing football,” Taylor told the Statesman. “I didn’t want to play anymore. I was out of it. Thank God for my girlfriend, my family, my pastors and God — because I made it through and kept working. I’m really looking forward to this year. I’m going to turn a lot of heads.”

Taylor knows he has talent which made it tougher to ride the bench.

“Coming back, not being myself, being slower, not as quick, not as agile — watching on Sunday, knowing you want to play, knowing you’re better than some guys and there’s nothing you can do about it,” he said.

Taylor has spent much his offseason in Boise, working toward a master’s degree in kinesiology, the Statesman reported. He’s only a semester away from graduating. This is not surprising because in the few conversations I’ve had with Taylor he comes across as intelligent.

Taylor has also been mentoring current Boise State players. He has added incentive to spend time in Boise because his girlfriend, Mackenzie Flannigan, is a member of the Boise State track team.

Taylor says he’s ready to prove his worth with the Dolphins.

“We’ve got a lot of competition (with the Dolphins) but I’m not scared of competition,” Taylor told the Statesman. “May the best man win. I played with a lot of great DBs here. … I’m healthy and ready to take over the world. That’s my plan.”

Taylor recently gave a shoutout on Twitter to former Dolphins Pro Bowl cornerbacks Sam Madison and Pat Surtain.

Gotcha, loved the article. He did have a rough year, but I remember how much they raved on ESPN when we got him. All of them were all about this guy. He is tough and works hard. He`ll be fine.

Taylor graded out high, was a bottom 1st round talent before injury.

He has his chance now. Go out there and win that starting job from Finnegan and prove the naysayers wrong.

Intelligent kid, gotta say. Kineisiology!

Boise State players don't translate to the NFL very well. We fell into that hype drafting Kyle Wilson CB in the first round, and he's been a huge disappointment for the Jets.noidea

Just because Wilson has been a bust how can you label the entire program a bust?

Not impressed with this guy or Davis. They both were simply flops. He should have quit

They really didn't perform well at all and Taylor was injured going into the draft. Let's see what he can do with a full healthy off-season and training camp under his belt. Prior to his injury he was rated very highly coming out of school, so there is a lot of talent there.

Have a hernia and groin injury and then go play CB in the NFL as a rookie.  You cant tell a damn thing from just the few snaps he took.  Dont even try to say that you can.

Everyone is different. Some can play with injuries others can't get out of their own way. Not impressed as I said. You don't like it don't get offended its my opinion.

And I did play with injuries. I don't want to hear anymore excuses.

Do CBs have to be the fastest players on the field and YOU can "play with injuries"?  We arent talking a broken finger.  Ever tried to do anything with a pulled groin and a hernia?  If so, were you as fast as you were when healthy?  No.  To say otherwise is a lie.  And you've been called out for a ridiculous post.

Lmao, yeah I think it's a little unfair to say either Davis or Taylor or any of last years draft picks are busts. It's almost as if Philbin refused to play rookies last season. I know those 2 were injured but Philbin really doesn't seem fond of playing rookies either way.

Which rookies should have gotten more playing time?  If they are injured, then they sit.  Otherwise, practice performance dictates playing time.  I dont know that anyone on here was a t every practice to know who should be out there...

I would just love to hear what major injury you played with and how you still made it onto an NFL field...sarcasm.gif

Funny how one little sound bite in a 30 min interview were he is saying how is looking forward to this year and focused on coming out strong after being hit with multiple injuries last year one after the other turns into he quitting....
