Ryan Swope retires

I was pretty shocked to hear this. He had concussion issues and maybe he wouldn't have suffered the OTA concussion like he did in AZ.. Still i think his health was on thin ice and it would have eventually happened.. Just goes to show you how much we know. sorry i know it is another team but this was a guy many people on this site wanted to pick badly goes to show how much any of us know.

 CBS sportsline

“We knew Ryan has a concussion history in college and understood that it could possibly be an issue,” said Cardinals general manager Steve Keim in a statement. “But weighing all the elements -- the medical information available, the particular position in the draft -- it was a decision we were comfortable making. As it turned out, he had a setback after he got here. Over the course of the subsequent evaluations, we all decided that Ryan's long-term well-being was the number-one priority and this was the best course to take.”

Said Swope in a statement through his agency, Rep 1 Sports: "As a result of a concussion I suffered during OTAs, I was advised by doctors that there were serious risks in returning to play football at this point. It has been a lifelong dream to play in the NFL but my long-term health interests outweigh my current goals for football. Because of that, I am electing to retire from the game for now and then reassess my future after this season. In the meantime, I plan to return to Texas A&M to pursue my degree. I want to thank the Arizona Cardinals organization for the opportunity and their support. I wish the team much success this season."

Wow!
I was surprised , as many were, that the Dolphins didn't burn a draft pick on him given his outstanding combine numbers, productivity and history with Tannehill, etc.

Football's not everything, but I can't remember a scenario exactly like this.

I know Larry Csonka had concussion issues at the beginning of his career and they devised a special helmet for him to wear (which he stopped wearing) but we know Zonk went on to have a HOF career.

Well to be honest the NCAA is a joke at punishing and flagging for illegal hits in games compared to the NFL.. You can launch at players, hitting a defenseless reciever and helmet to helmet contact are rarely called. We all know that and many people point to that as a reason they love college football..

Still at the collegiate level i could see the need for these rules even more so then the NFL. These are 17-22 year old kids going out there getting destroyed in many cases and they don't even make any money while putting their professional career on the line. They aren't even getting paid salaries, Its sad that this guys career is over before it even began essentially from concussions suffered in college... This is one guy who definitely deserves to to be part of the concussion lawsuit only i don't think he can sue the NFL.noidea

It is becoming more of a serious problem as you look at the number of college prospects who have come into the NFL with concussion injuries already.. Javid best, Ryan Swope, countless others are devalued by the NFL already by these issues. I think college football is going to have to clean their game up or face the same issues the NFL is facing.. Ryan Swope may be the lighting rod that starts the storm.

It's a shame that this all happened.  I agree that Swope may be the catalyst for major changes in the NCAA that may end up translating to the NFL.  Kid had a bright future and I was supportive of drafting him.

I liked the direction the NFL took with putting some responsibility on the ball carrier.  There is a lot they can learn from rugby on safety.

If we had come away with Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor and Ryan Swope I would have calling for Ireland to get an extension. Swope will play at some point IMO but no way is this the guy I want on my team now. If he gets rolling and becomes a key cog in your offense he's a fragile player who is obviously one hit from a career ending concussion. Extremely unfortunate for him.

Dstock, how can you say he'll play at some point when he just retired? Apparently he suffered another concussion during OTAs and hasn't recovered - he was at severe risk for the future and went back to A&M to get his degree.
Somebody gave me a Hickey.

RE: Ryan Swope retires

Read the article he said he consider his options next year (not in those words). Not sure what he is going to school for but it probably wouldn't pay him as much as football would. If he feels healthy next spring its going to be hard for him to stay retired and not pursue his dream.

Swope released a statement Thursday night through his representation, Rep1 Sports:

"As a result of a concussion I suffered during OTAs, I was advised by doctors that there were serious risks in returning to play football at this point. It has been a lifelong dream to play in the NFL but my long-term health interests outweigh my current goals for football. He's done, seems like the Dolphins already knew the ice was very thin with Swope and there was no way they were going to pick him. More Sherman inside info..
