Grimes

According to espn we got our # 1 cb on a one year deal. Sweet! It's 5.5 mill deal

RE: Grimes

Brent Grimes strikes deal with Dolphins

Franchised a year ago by the Falcons, cornerback Brent Grimes was a free agent in 2013.

And now he’s no longer a free agent.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Grimes has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Dolphins.

The contract is worth $5.5 million, which puts him near the top of this year’s pathetic cornerback market — and which gives him another crack at getting paid again in 2014. Of that amount, the base value if $5 million; $500,000 comes from per-game roster bonuses.

The deal also includes a $2.25 million signing bonus, and $750,000 of the base salary is guaranteed. That results in a total guarantee of $3 million.

Grimes tore an Achilles tendon in the first week of the 2013 regular season. Coupled with the fact that he’ll be 30 later this year, interest wasn’t as high as it could have been, but he still did well in relation to the market at large.

For the Dolphins, the amount counts fully against the 2013 cap. But that’s not a problem, given that they structured all of the new multi-year deals to have minimal cap consequences in the current year.

RE: Grimes

If he stays healthy I can see a long term deal in his future. I had Grimes as my #3 CB free agent, so glad we got him and 750k guaranteed makes it a safe deal.

RE: Grimes

Good solid signing. Gives us a lot of freedom with our picks this year and get good value for each pick.

Agree and as he is 30 and coming off a major injury, a 1-year "prove yourself" deal is a great move. Per the pundits, this is a very deep CB draft with the value being in rounds 3-5. If there is value in rounds 1-3, I can see Ireland pulling the trigger then a double-down a bit later. No team should ever reach in the draft to fill a need and I don't think Ireland will be tempted at #12.

With all the FA signings, I can see us moving up a bit and targeting 8-10 rookies on the roster vs 11-15.

I wonder about Marshall. He had a good career before coming here. I don't know how he was used in Arizona, zone or man to man. He certainly wasn't impressive last year but he was playing hurt and possibly out of scheme. He seems like the safer of the 2 to me. I don't see Patterson getting 4.6 million from us unless he lights it up during camps. Nobody should be cut until Grimes comes in healthy though.

RE: Grimes

Agreed.  No one gets cut unless Grimes is healthy.  I like the deal.  LOVE the deal.  Grimes had an Achilles rupture so he is a risk, but for one year at 3.5 million, not a huge risk.  If he comes back and plays well, he can be re-signed for a longer term deal.  If not, he's gone next off-season.  We had a need at the position and they got one of the guys I wanted.  I'm happy.  This has been a terrific off-season so far and with the addition of one or two more pieces i can see the team drafting BPA in the draft.

C'monnnnnnnnn Winston.  I still think we should sign him too.Re-structure Patterson and Marshall and get Winston in here.  Do it Ireland, quit dilly dallying.

If Ireland will just come out and say: "we felt comfortable letting Smith and Vontae Davis go because Marshall and Patterson are projected as our starting corners and we're confident in their abilities."

But to pay these 2 guys a ton of money who have done nothing, cherry pick for injured player discounts, and say nothing about Patterson and Marshall leaves more question marks.

Are you ever happy or what. Why so down we are having a nice free agency with 11 picks coming in April...
Total buzz kill

RE: Grimes

Wanny we can cut Patterson at any time with no dead money, give me one good reason we wouldn't keep him on the roster for camp. If he dominates he earns his contract, if he's good but not that good we ask him to restructure using Marshall as leverage. If he's bad he's released.

Also, there's this new thing coming up, it's called the "draft". And apparently you can find pretty good players there - it's not like we are set at cornerback for the rest of the season.

Look the sun is going to rise Jschwald, and Wanny is going to complain its just the way of the universe.

I like the Brent Grimes signing, However i still think we take a CB early on in the draft like 2nd round and maybe 3rd as well..

1st pick right now is undoubtedly going to be a LT/RT though,

No negativity just reality. What OT are you talking about?

Every draft in the world has us taking Rhodes at 12 and the Chargers taking Johnson at 11.

The Louis and Grimes signings are good but not great. They're both coming off recent, serious injuries and are major question marks as to when they can participate and how good they'll be.

However, on paper, this has been a much better offseason than last year.

No one can dispute that.

Until they actually perform on the field for us, isn't every FA acquisition under scrutiny? If these guys outperform their 1-year contact then it was a great signing and if Wallace does not break the 1000 yard mark or score x number of TD's then it's considered a bust.

I do agree with you that this year is better on paper so let's hope Ireland nails another draft & we'll be in good shape moving forward.

RE: Grimes

Reason for excitement: No wonder Ireland opened up the pocketbook a little more.

Grimes tore his Achilles the first week of the season and after watching this little jumping jack on YOU Tube videos, I can honestly say with confidence Grimes should be ready to go by training camp.

Not sure about Louis. He tore his ACL I believe the last week in November and he's a much bigger man.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us trade up in the first round and get Lane Johnson or Eric Fischer even.. We have the Ammo to do it and would still have enough draft picks left to cover our area's of weakness (CB, DE) and then some.

Xavier rhodes doesn't seem like a Jeff Ireland pick to me ( to straightforward and high for a CB).. he is going to end up spending our first pick on an Olineman,im having a feeling that Ireland may kick out John Jerry to tackle which may actually be a better position for him with his size and power. Then maybe draft Cooper or Warmack with the pick to challenge for a starting guard spot.
