Backup QB

Posted: 1/4/2013 10:31 AM

Backup QB

One of the really overlooked upcoming Free Agents we have is Matt Moore, who is probably going to depart for a starting gig (which he's definitely earned a shot at.) If that happens, we'll be in the market for a backup or we'll be riding with Devlin.

One name I think we could keep our eyes on for next year is Ryan Fitzpatrick. Buffalo will almost certainly release him to avoid paying $7mil +, he knows the WCO, is inconsistent but can come in and win a game or two if called upon. Smart guy who could probably help Tannehill continue to develop in terms of breaking down film and preparation.

There really isn't much point in paying Fitzpatrick the kind of money he'd expect.

I don't know how much Fitz expects to be paid, but it's probably just backup money as I don't think anybody in the league really views him as a starter. He also just came off a fat contract so he's not in dire straits.

No reason not to pick up another QB from college, high pick or low doesn't matter to me, just so long as he shows some promise...

RE: Backup QB

I don't like the idea of having a career backup at Qb. When they come in in most cases the offense gets dumbed down and you run the ball more. In some cases they light it up for 3 quarters and create a qb contrevesy and then go back to being who you thought they were. I like having a young guy who hasn't told himself he's just a back up yet. I like Matt Moore and I hope we resign him although I doubt he wants to be here. I see him in either KC, Arizona, Tampa, or maybe Buffalo. I couls see Andy Reid turning Matt Moore into a starter. I think it would be wise to draft a QB in the 3rd round this year. Delvin will probably get the backup job but I think it would be good for Tannehill to have some heat behind him. I think Delvin is just happy with being on the roster.

I don't see a market for Matt Moore as a starter anywhere in the league.  Tampa won't give up on Freeman yet, Arizona won't trade for Moore (they will draft a QB or go after Vick), Buffalo will draft the Syracuse QB in the 2nd or 3rd round to compete with Fitz, and Reid will not trade for Matt Moore let alone turn him into a starter.  Matt Moore is an okay QB who is good as a spot starter / Back up.  No one in the league thinks he is the answer to any starting QB vacancy and if he decides to sign elsewhere then so be it.

As for drafting a QB to back up RTH, with the needs this team has I wouldn't be too excited if Miami drafted a developmental QB.  Devlin is untested as well so to have two untested inexperienced backups isn't the way to go.  Tavares Jackson is a possibility as a back up option, along with a few other potential veteran options that I wouldn't mind exploring.

On Bleacher Report they have us drafting Aaron Rogers little brother in the final round. I would be ok with that.

A ton of Jets fans have been clamoring to sign Matt Moore next offseason since he will be cheap but good and send him to compete against Mark Sanchez who they are married too.I would say the Jets are going to put a high target on him considering the breakout game he had this year was against them and they finally realize Mark Sanchez sucks.

Dante isn't Matt Moore a free agent this year i think his contract is already ended so no team would have to trade for him at all he is going to the highest bidder.
