UK baseball players signing MLB contracts (including signees)

UK baseball players signing MLB contracts (including signees)

We have 14 kids to watch--9 UK players were drafted by MLB, and 5 more incoming signees were drafted. This is what I know, but it is incomplete. As far as I know, 6 of the 9 are definitely gone. Three more are still pending.

I will edit it if you provide more info or if I hear of something. Again, I know it's incomplete, just what I have picked up so far. And I may have error(s) in it, too, but we will fix it if I do.

UK players who have signed pro contracts

Jr  RHP Tim Peterson 20th round, Mets
Jr. C Luke Maile 8th round,  Rays
Sr. C Michael Williams 30th round, Rays
Jr. OF Brian Adams, 8th round, Padres
Sr  IF Thomas McCarthy, 18th round, White Sox
Sr. LHP Alex Phillips 21st round, Tigers
RSJr. OF Cameron Flynn, 23rd round, Marlins
Jr. LHP Taylor Rogers, 11th round, Twins

Unsigned or I just don't know yet
Jr. LHP Jerad Grundy 26th round- little bird said he was returning to UK. Hope the little bird was right. Interesting note--he has  been drafted 3 times already--46th round out of high school, 42nd round after JUCO, and then this one. He has improved his stock each time; maybe he'll see this as another opportunity? I hope. If we could return Grundy and Littrell as our starting weekend pitchers it would go a long way in the SEC.

UK incoming freshmen who were drafted - thus far nobody has signed here to my knowledge
6'6 LHP Chase Mullins, 24th Round, Texas Rangers
C  Casey Schroeder 21st Round; Cardinals
C Zach Arnold 27th Round, Mets - is going to stick with UK
RHP Kyle Cody 33rd round, Phillies
RHP Matt Pope 38th round; Pirates

Returning Starting Players to watch for Kentucky (classification is next year)
1B/P So A.J. Reed
2B Jr J.T. Riddle
SS Jr Matt Reida
LHP Jr Corey Littrell
RHP Jr Travis Gott (closer)
OF So Austin Cousino
OF Jr Lucas Witt (part-time starter, especially in tournament)
OF Zac Zellers

Others of significance

LHP So Sam Mahar
RHP So Chandler Shephard
C RSJr Michael Thomas
RHP Sr Walter Wijas

Note--there are a lot of UK players I just don't know enough about that may be "others of significance." I saw very little of Paul McConkey, but in the limited PT I saw, he sure "sounded" like he's a hard hitter. Does he play 3B? I really don't know enough. There are several pitchers that had limited innings that may have the opportunity to move up--I know some of them were highly regarded out of high school, but I have lost track of who is who, etc. and wasn't going to go back and research right now. I just went with what most of us that sorta followed UK baseball would know; the names are all very familiar to us.

The entire UK baseball roster this year is below, in case I overlooked some. (I am sure I did).

Re: UK baseball players signing MLB contracts (including

Here is an excerpt from the UK website on the signees who were drafted:

catcher Zach Arnold, righty Kyle Cody, left-hander Chase Mullins, catcher Casey Schroeder and right-hander Matt Pope.

A 6-foot-2, 190-pound catcher out of Ottawa-Glandorf High School (Ohio), Schroeder was UK’s highest drafted signee, going to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 21st round (No. 690 overall). A 6-foot-9 southpaw out of Paris, Ky., Mullins was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 24th round (No. 756). A 6-foot-2 catcher out of Franklin County High School, Arnold was picked 830th overall in the 27th round by the New York Mets, while Cody is a 6-foot-6 righty out of Central Catholic High School (Wis.) who was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 33rd round (No. 1028 overall). A 6-foot-6, 225-pound right-hander out of Matthew Science Hill High School (Tenn.), Pope marked UK’s final signee drafted, going to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 38th round (No. 1156 overall).

Paul is from here in Knoxville. Great kid. He played ss in High School. I know they are looking at him a little at 3b....but he needs to improve somewhat to play there. At this stage, he a pretty solid hitter though...may develop into relaible iinfielder at some point.
I think they really would like Max Kuhn to play 3b. Strong arm...saw little if any PT this season.

Thanks, WestKnoxCat--really good info about Paul. I didn't see him much this year, but he passes the "look" test as a hard hitter. Hope they find a place for him.

Paul is tearing it up in summer ball. There is alot of baseball talent here in Knoxville!  Over the years, UT has overlooked some ( insert Michael Williams). and that programm was in shambles.

RE: UK baseball players signing MLB contracts (including signees

Good news about Paul. He just passed the look test to me, albeit in limited time (for me) to see.

Jared Grundy is still unsigned by the Twins. I understand that it is expected to go down to the wire. He's in Cape Cod, and the Twins are getting more looks at him as well.

Grundy has started two games, going 5.0 innings each time. He is 1-0, 2.70 ERA, 9 K's, 10 innings, 3 BBs, 7 hits.
