UK Football Practice Notes - Tuesday, Sept. 18

* It was "Coordinator Tuesday" at UK football practice today. No Joker Phillips on Tuesdays, but both coordinators and other staff members are available for longer interviews.

* Randy Sanders was up first, and talked about finding ways to get the ball in DeMarcus Sweat's hands more often. The freshman WR has scored TDs in each of the last two games and, according to some around the program, is one of the best prospects they've ever had at the position. He's still learning, though. The biggest challenges for Sweat are knowing where he's supposed to be at all times, according to Sanders. "Older is nice, but talented is better," Sanders said. "We're working hard with DeMarcus and pushing him to learn what to do and how to do. DeMarcus has to do his part. Some days he's better at it than others. We need to see consistency out of him because there's no doubt he can make plays." ... "Right now, when he's on the field, there's a good chance somebody's band is gonna play. We just gotta make sure it's ours and not the other team's."

* Sanders also talked about the wish to run the ball more than the Cats have so far, but they've fallen behind in the Louisville and WKU games by too much to make that realistic. He thinks Jonathan George did a good job last week, but don't expect that to mean he becomes the man moving forward. There's a reason he's been behind CoShik and Raymond on the depth chart, Sanders said.

* Asked about what he expects to see from Florida, Sanders said "A bunch of big angry guys." Scheme-wise, he said the Gators are similar to what WKU did, but much bigger and faster.

* On what the film revealed about Maxwell Smith's interceptions, Sanders said: "We had one bad throw that got away from him. We had one miscommunication between he and a receiver. We had one, the safety made a great play. And we had one bad decision, basically is what it amounted to. Obviously, we've got to eliminate those things, but the one thing that Max normally does is throw it where he wants it to go, and he had one get away from him. That was the first interception."

* Sanders said he did some positives from the way Smith kept competing and got the Cats back into the game. "That's the thing about quarterback. You can play 78 plays really good, but four bad ones, you get beat. He said QBs and CBs have to learn to put things behind them and play the next play.

* Sanders said they have to continue to keep working on stretching the field and getting more out of their deep passing game. They had some opportunities against Western, but didn't take advantage.

* Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Rick Minter said he has always admired Boise State's offense from a spectator's standpoint. That's what Florida has incorporated with Brent Pease in Gainesville. "It's Boise State's offense with really fast players," he said.

* Asked what the Cats need to do against a strong Florida rushing game, Minter said they need to hold the edges better and take the proper gaps. Said the jet sweeps with wide receivers and hybrid athletes add another dimension to the offense that makes it difficult to defend. "They have a lot of different ways to attack you in the rushing game."

* "They're much more diverse than what I remember in the past," Minter said of Florida.

* Minter said he thinks S Dakotah Tyler's reps are increasing and he's getting closer to getting more snaps in the game.

* Asked about freshman Thomas Chapman being on the depth chart at DT now, Minter said they're still trying to decide whether he'll play or not. There's been some talk about it among the coaches, but he said it has more to do with some other guys being banged up. They want to be fair to both the player and the program, Minter said, clearly in reference to not burning a redshirt if a kid isn't going to be on the field very much.

* Regarding Taylor Wyndham's ongoing development at the hybrid spot and how he's adjusting to the challenge of dropping back in coverage, Minter said he came within an eyelash of winning the game for the Cats on Saturday. He did a nice job of picking up the back on the flare route and nearly intercepted it. Just needed a bit more vertical, but "that was a heckuva play."

* Minter said he was concerned about how the defense put up no resistance on a couple of the goal line situations. He thought they played the run fairly well if you look at the whole game (51 rushes, 163 yards, 3.1 avg) but they barely laid a hand on the WKU backs on the short TD runs. He was very disappointed about the effort and execution on those plays.

* "We're just not getting off blocks and striking," Minter said of the overall defensive execution. They need more 2nd and 9s instead of 2nd and 5s.

Re: UK Football Practice Notes - Tuesday, Sept. 18

Thanks, JD.

If you want the ball in Sweat's hands, it would help to have him on the field.  Take your choice, talent or experience.

It's laughable to say we want to run the ball more when Darrell Warren likes to never see the field on O.  We weren't far enough behind WKU early to not run if we had any interest in doing so.

On the one TD from the one yd line, one of our linebackers went to his left on the snap and the running back ran right to the place where our guy vacated and scored easily..It seems our defense has always bit on ball fakes,no matter what coach we had..this goes back to when I started my season tickets in 1989..If that backer holds his ground he makes the tackle...Dont know what the answer is..
