Joker Phillips' Monday Presser - WKU Week

* We have a game time announced for the Florida game: 12:21 ET kickoff in Gainesville on the SEC Network.

* Larry Warford has been named SEC co-Offensive Lineman of the Week. Graded out at 91% against KSU with 8 knockdown blocks.

* Joker says RB CoShik Williams and LB/S hybrid Josh Forrest are probable this week after missing the KSU game with minor injuries.

RE: Joker Phillips' Monday Presser - WKU Week

* Film review of the KSU game showed they still could have made some plays. Left a few big opportunities on the field. One of them, the goal line stand by KSU, Joker was initially critical of Dyshawn Mobley. But after watching film, said the freshman RB had nowhere to go.

* Joker said they're giving up too many big plays on defense, 4x had runs of 15+ or passes of 25+ -- their assessment of a "big play."

* Says Cats need to stretch the field more. Missed a potential big play to La'Rod King early. Thinks people will start to sit on their short routes if they don't take more shots downfield.

* Joker said the defense was a lot better in getting lined up against Kent State. Made some strides in that regard from Week 1 to Week 2. Thinks that will continue to be a focus because many teams in SEC will go even faster at LOS.

* Says Maxwell Smith carried himself like a starter during the off-season, and it's showing up on the field with his play and his chemistry with the wide receivers. Teammates saw it and took note of it.

* Joked that Max was kind of tossed to the wolves as a "pup" last year, especially in LSU game, where he joked that he got a "sprained face."

In the SEC, teams are going to sit on the short routes, bring some heat, and force them to beat them down field.

* Sounds like you'll see more of Taylor Wyndham at DE and Bud Dupree at WLB in order "to get the best 11 guys on the field." ... "It's not a temporary thing."

* Joker says they'll have to find more ways to utilize Morgan Newton and put some additional things in the package for him as an H-back.

* Says they wanted to get Whitlow an earlier series against KSU, but didn't get a big enough lead when they wanted it.

* Asked about Aaron Boyd, Joker says they never give up on a player. Says he wasn't a fast receiver, either, during his time at UK. Gotta find ways to be effective, and Boyd has done that. "Nobody more proud of Aaron than myself."

* Credited Pat Washington for helping get the best out of Boyd, too. Says knowledge has really been invaluable.

* Says players like Aaron Boyd and Mikie Benton are big examples to players (especially walk-ons in Benton's case) to never give up. Keep working.

RE: Joker Phillips' Monday Presser - WKU Week

* Asked what he saw from WKU vs. Bama, said they had some individual guys win a lot of battles. They got a good pass rush on the Tide, recording six sacks. Had some good coverage on the back end, too.

* Joker said there's been no big structural change or terminology changes in their defense. They're just stressing getting lined up and getting off blocks, making plays. Says you can't stop everything, but you have to stop something.

* Daryl Collins has slipped down to No. 2 on the depth chart behind Gene McCaskill. Joker said that Daryl did not bring the same kind of intensity and focus to the game Saturday as he did the previous week at Louisville. Said he needs to bring "that guy" to the game.

RE: Joker Phillips' Monday Presser - WKU Week

* Joker said Aaron Boyd and EJ Fields are blocking the best at the WR position, and that's helping them get more snaps than others. "You're going to catch passes" (as much as the Cats throw it). Gotta do the little things.

* Joker said they're not surprised by the O-Line's play, but very happy with it. Good communication, especially from the middle. Said he was worried about the left side a bit because they don't do much talking. "I thought they'd try to text each other," he quipped. "I thought both of them were mute at first." (Darrian Miller and Zach West)

* Joker said not to read anything into the decision to play freshman QB Jalen Whitlow now and redshirt Patrick Towles. Said it had mainly to do with Whitlow being a "different type of quarterback" they can do other things with. Has nothing to do with how they feel about the future of the position.

If he wants to be critical of someone there, it should be whomever called basically the same play three times in a row.  rolleyes
Don't panic

I tend to agree (play-action to the TE has never been stopped in that situation in the history of football - see Tyler Robinson in the UofL game) but I kind of know what they were doing there. They were trying to challenge the O-Line and, to some extent Mobley, who got into some trouble with his Tweets last week, to punch that ball in.

This seems counter to

"Sanders said the OL is really playing well."  and

"Joker said they're not surprised by the O-Line's play, but very happy with it. Good communication, especially from the middle. Said he was worried about the left side a bit because they don't do much talking."

Not at all. O-Line was really good almost all night long. Just not there. And I think there were some backups in at the time. They played a lot of guys.
