Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

I have some  thoughts on this, but wanted to toss out the question and see what kind of community response we got.  I'm betting there could be at least 4 different responses.

What say you?

What is your most important game of the 2014 season for Kentucky?

Only pick one. No ties.

Vanderbilt; simply because we need to end that SEC losing streak.

I'm going with Florida. They don't have to win it, but if they came go in there and play them tough then I think that would be immeasureable from a confidence standpoint. If they go in there and pull out the win, then lookout, I think guys will start having that swagger. Likewise, if they go in there and get pummeled, that could have just as bad an affect in the wrong direction.

Florida maybe if they play in Lex but swamp is hard plus florida kids will no doubt be playing for muschamp's job-lose and may be fired on the spot- imo it's vandy- what 3 losses in a row and it's at home.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

The first one is Florida, The second is Vandy. The third is So Car. The fourth is Miss St. The fifth is Missouri. The sixth is Georgia. The seventh is Tenn and the eighth is UL. Sorry but the point of that little spiel is that if you don't get the first one then the next big game is.... I hope they play and prepare for them one at a time. I did not include the non conference ones and LSU but each could become a big game depending on the outcome of others.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

IMO, year in/year out it's probably vanderbilt for one reason: It's very rare that we have been able to be bowl eligible unless we've beaten them. Eventually, the 4 ooc's need to be sure wins. Whether that means ul stays or goes, so be it. Then after Vandy comes msu. For us to reach the lowest level of success (bowl eligibility), we have to beat vu, msu and all ooc's.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

I'm going to assume that the SEC east goes back to a more natural order this year.  For that reason, it's gotta be Vandy.  We're in the cellar of our division and we need to at least get a foot on the stairs.  It'd be great if we could take four or five steps this year, but it's very very important to at least break the inertia at the bottom.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

Without a doubt -- and I would argue this at length -- it is Ohio.

Everyone wants to look ahead too much and assume too much.

UT Martin should be a gimme.  But, Ohio is a real team with a great coach that has pulled some big upsets and thrown some big scares in recent years.  If we beat Ohio -- and we should -- then we are 2-0 and THEN we can think about Florida and Vandy and Miss St and even UT and UofL.

But, if we lose to Ohio, then the program loses all credibility and we are back to wringing our hands and gnashing our teeth.

It is like climbing a ladder.  A person can climb a ladder a hundred feet into the air or more -- IF they can reach the first rung.  But miss that first rung, and you are back on the ground flat on your back.

Sorry folks, but it is Ohio.

Case closed.

If we don't beat Ohio by at least 4 touchdowns we're in big trouble.

For me, they're all important but I agree about the Florida game potentially setting the stage for a really nice season, win or lose.
The sleeping giant is awakening.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

My choice was Vandy for the following reasons:

* It's early in the schedule. It will set the tone, for better or worse. Win, and UK could realistically be 4-2 and have the confidence to win a couple of games in the second half of the season. Lose, and things could get iffy. That winless SEC skid could reach three years, and that may result in some lost momentum for the staff in recruiting.

* It's at home. If you are really taking the next step as a program, you have to begin by defending your home turf.

* Vandy has lost its head coach and a lot of talent. The Dores are projected to take a step (or three) back this season. The Cats have to get back on the winning side of this rivalry.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

I don't see a realistic chance of beating UF in the Swamp.  Keeping it from being a blowout is VERY important.  Assuming that that happens, and that the team finishes the first three games without serious injury issues, then Vandy should be the most important.  Win, and it's a good time to become optimistic.  Lose, and it'll be tough to convince people that this team is a threat to win SEC games.  So, Vandy, I think.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

Vandy is my choice 1.B for all the reasons Jeff mentioned.  I am still going with Ohio, though.  If you think we should beat Ohio by 4 touchdowns I would say I probably agree with that.  But then I ask, "Isn't that the way we felt about WKU 2 years ago?"

A win over Vandy would be absolutely great, and would set up the season and infuse the program with a much needed shot of enthusiasm and optimism.  But a loss to Ohio would be absolutely devastating, not only for this season, but for recruiting as well.  It is one thing to compete with OSU for Ohio kids.  That task becomes far more daunting if you cannot beat Ohio.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

I'm of the mind that they will thump Ohio. You make a lot of improvement between your first and second games and I looked on their website and their body of positive work for the last 5 years only counts in the MAC. Several routs occurred within that conference too during the span including last year.

This team still has some youth and the Fla game will be tough on the road. I don't know how much those guys  have improved and a lot of preseason analysts are giving them the benefit of the doubt on it. Doubts remain. UK's offense will have to make a good showing in the Swamp. I am glad they have started practicing in hot and humid weather because they need to for games like this.

My view too.  Could also affect recruiting with G. Brown & Harris.

To all the "beat ohio by 4 tds" guessing you guys must know a helluva lot about them than I do- I'm more of the opinion that this team will have to play hard against anyone including ohio- we've won 4 games last 2 years- don't see taking anyone for granted

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

If UK can not beat UTM, OU, and ULM  forget any game being important.    I thought about Vandy being the most important game but felt that is a home game UK should also win.      I am going with Missouri as being the most important game.    IMO this is a game UK can win and if they win it is a road win.    This would be the fifth win and set UK up with two more winnable games on it schedule in UT and UofL to become bowl eligible.      UK must beat the three OOC teams and Vandy for this to be the most important game but if they can not beat those four is any game going to be very important.

Another way to look at it however is any win is important for a team that has had a 2-10 won loss record two years in a row and that first SEC could be considered important for a team that hasn't won a SEC game for two years.

This all changes however if UK can upset one of USC, Georgia, Florida, LSU, or MSU then that automatically becomes the most important game.

Louisville for two reasons. First is it could very well be for bowl eligibility and second because it is Louisville.

Re: Most important game on the 2014 schedule?

Vanderbilt closely followed by Miss State.  UK must win one of the two if they are not going to beat anybody else in the SEC.  A very board and subjective question so I will narrow it down even further to eliminate any further elaboration.  Any SEC win that comes before the Tennessee game.  If no quality SEC wins then will take a good showing against Florida.

I don't think the Ohio game is everything.   I will take an Ohio loss and a win a against any SEC team outside of (Vandy, Miss State, and Tennessee) over going 4-8 with a Vandy win.  That would be a losing season that would show more progress to me by the team losing to someone they shouldn't but beating great SEC team later on rather then just 4-8 with a Vandy win.

I thought there may be a few more UofL picks. It's an interesting suggestion, if they can scratch out 5 wins prior to the game.

And if that scenario played out, a few of those folks who are still belly-aching about the game being moved to the end of schedule will probably change their tune.

nothing could be better than the ul game being for a bowl....Essentially, the ul game has been for bowl eligibility for Ky even though the game was at the beginning of the season.

We're going to beat the brakes off of Ohio.

Ohio will not be a push over. Vandy is the SEC  team we will beat first.

Ohio U lost 8 of their offensive starters and truthfully they were not great even with them last year.     UK should beat them by at least 3 TDs if they expect to make any noise on the rest of the schedule.

I say Vandy. We need to win an SEC game.Going winless in the SEC the past two seasons is not acceptable.Vandy moving up on the schedule is our first home SEC game of the season and we need to win.
