Nick Haynes to UK!

Posted: 2/3/2013 12:50 PM

Nick Haynes to UK!

#20 on our committ list, just tweeted out he's a Wildcat. 6'4 294 3star Olineman from Florida. One of our least heralded committs but lots of potential because of his size and athleticism, once played TE

Does he have academic issues?  If so, will UK sign him despite the commit?   Thanks.

Have you heard of academic issues? And, what does "despite the commit" mean?

Hope we get Timmons. Hate to compare him to a Gator, but I could see Neal Brown using him like Percy Harvin.

Harvin is Timmons' favorite player. That's one reason Illinois has remained a player. One of the  Illnini coaches (OC?) was Harvin's position coach at UF.

I thought yes on the academics, but perhaps I'm wrong.  The dtc means that if he has issues, could we choose not to sign him?

If we soft played Hearns because of grades, I can't imagine signing anyone else either. If they sign, they count toward the limit.

Of course.  Hence my original question.

Would only come into question if we were to have more than 25 ready to sign, I don't think that is going to be the case this year. He would not count against the 85 if he were to fail to qualify for the Fall Semester.

Maybe I'm confused,  if Haynes signs with us and doesn't qualify,  isn't he counted against the 25 and we would actually lose his spot?  I could be wrong.  But I have looked everywhere that I can, and cannot find any questions about him having grade problems.

Re: Nick Haynes to UK!

"I was a tight end and a tackle for the most part," he said. "I also played fullback and some D-Line, but no center or guard. Coach Schlarman said they really like me as a center because of my footwork and intelligence. They like how I'm aware of things that other players may not pick up on, and that's very important for the center in their system. He's got to call out a lot of stuff for the rest of the line."

I'm confused as to why there's concern about his academics. I cannot find anything that would suggest that he may not be academically eligible or will have problems that he will not make the academic requirements. In fact, as indicated, he may play center due to his footwork and intelligence. I realize he may be football smart, but not have his academics in order.

I have seen nothing questioning his academics. Gerntz raised it without any source. So, who knows?

Yes, we would lose the spot as far as 25 goes. That's what I was getting at, that it would only come into play if we had more than 25 that were wanting to sign. I don't think we are looking to have more than 25 so it would be a non issue if we don't.

Does anyone believe Haynes is being recruited as a TE? Huh? Scout?

Bad, I read a quote from Haynes on twitter that said he thought he would play either guard or center.

Re: Nick Haynes to UK!

Why don't we want the commit? There I said it--what gives discussing something that has not come up in any discussion before on the young man? Could it be we are now a playuh for every uncommitted 4 and 5-star recruit in the land? Was just here on an official visit, 3-star and no less an authority than the coaches want him. Anybody get that?

Welcome Nick and I know everyone will love you when you start playing. You'll make a fine C or G for the Blue.

RE: Nick Haynes to UK!

I am sure of that.  I think as a center or guard recruit, he is likely to be seen as a 3 star, but Scout has him listed as a TE.  I doubt any team recruited Haynes to play TE.

Re: Nick Haynes to UK!

The prospect of him not havnig grades was thrown out of no where from Gerntz who provided no basis for his understanding, other than to say he thought he heard it some where.  I have heard nothing about such things before the post.  I suspect it is baseless.  Which leads to a senseless discussion.

The impact is two-fold in signing someone that doesn't qualify.

First - according to the SEC rule we are limited to 25 new enrollees per year and can only enroll from our list of signees.

Second - If one of your signees doesn't enroll in the fall you can't re-use, or back date, that scholarship for a December grad - January enrollee.

I can't speak for Gerntz, but is it possible he simply confused Haynes with Hearns?

if that's what he did, mea culpa. Easy to do with the whirlwind of recruits mentioned recently.

Re: Nick Haynes to UK!

I don't believe there are any questions about Mr. Haynes' academic standing. From what I have read on another board, his HS is a very elite academic institution in Florida, so there is little doubt that he will having any trouble getting through the academic clearing house. All I can say is welcom aboard Mr. Haynes, looking forward to seeing you in BLUE!

Re: Nick Haynes to UK!

Guys, thought I could possibly clear this up. I'm close to the situation in Niceville, and one of his coaches reports that Haynes has a 3.7 GPA and an ACT score that's well above the qualifying limit. He's also a member of the Niceville hall of fame, which honors those who are well-rounded. Grades are not an issue with Haynes.

He's a 3-star everywhere because he's only been playing since the beginning on his junior season. The kid got better and better as a junior at tight end, then moved to tackle as a senior, where he gained more and more interest with each week. Florida State and Florida have both shown very late interest, but Kentucky got a steal here. Trust me, this is a big get for you guys.

Thanks WPwriter and southflirish. It's always good to hear about the person and not just the player. I always remember these kind of things when I see them play and develop. thanks again. Welcome Nick!
