Remember these words
High praise!
“We were going to force him on our shoulders, that’s what he means to us, he is so important in our hearts, he loves this program so much and he breathes it. He’s a champion.” - Larry Warford

Re: Remember these words
So a lot of players like Joker. No surprise there. Champion? Of what? Was there a Madden tournament during the open week? Joker is a nice guy, but a champion of absolutely nothing.

You do not get it. If you did, you would have some discipline over your tongue (typing fingers).

He was not a good coach but that doesn't mean he didn't form strong relationships with his players. I played for poor coaches but remained loyal to them even after they were fired because they were good to me. As for being a winner, who knows if he is or not. If he is happy, has a purpose in life and is contributing to the welfare of others, he probably is happy....who knows. In fact, that's really none of our business. Our interest should be if he can do what we want to pay a football coach for doing....winning. Can't knock the players having stong feelings for the man.

Point is not about coaching. I hope you are just not trying.

Re: Remember these words
I understand all of that. And I do get it Bad. My point is that players make these comments at every school every time a coach is let go. Coaches form a strong bond with players that last long after their playing days are over. My point - should you choose to "get it"(I'll hold my breath) -is that this statement is no different from any other made every year by players leaving a program whether the coach is fired or not. In my post I said Joker is a nice guy and he no doubt cares greatly about these kids. But champion? I have a hard time not rolling my eyes at that statement and I truly do not care if you approve or not.

RE: Remember these words
The players identified a good man who cared about them AND IS ONE OF US. He is blue through and through. The idea is to realize that the firing is OVER and there is no need for people to continue to pile on. Joker needs to be seen for what he is, a man who committed himself to UK. And, IT IS different, because Joker remains ONE OF US.
Otherwise, all the fan postings when kids commit and come to Kentucky about them being part of our family is NOTHING BUT HOGWASH.
So, I hope now you get it. Because, I think the players do.

I still don't understand the point of this. What do you want us to do - Have a wake?
Joker made $2M per year while working at his dream job. It didn't work out. We should all be so lucky.

I am starting to believe you wish Joker was still the coach at UK. Yes the players liked him who doesn't but he was a terrible football coach and got paid and nice wage for being terrible. Badinage wrote:

I think that is more your bias than anything I have ever stated. Please demonstrate your contention with some evidence. catmanjack wrote: I am starting to believe you wish Joker was still the coach at UK. You can disagree, but to debate your position, you might want to back it up with some facts, which you have yet to do in any disagreement we have had on this board. CatFever49 wrote: Catmanjack, you're not allowed to disagree with some posters here. It makes you a "troll." LOL.

RE: Remember these words
"Can be proved" and proved are two separate things. You offer no evidence to back up your allegations, contentions or positions. You just ask futher inane questions in response to others' evidence or present responses that are not very intelligible. I have my conclusion about your motivation here.

Your conclusions are only as good as your understanding. In other words, they're useless. What do want me to prove, that top recruits want to play for top coaches? That's self evident.

RE: Remember these words
Ok, so the kids enjoyed playing for Joker. Did they enjoy losing, too? I had coaches, teachers and professors whom I respected in some way other than what they were bringing to light as professional instructors and leaders. The point is that JP had to satisfy his employers by performing to certain standards and given ample time, he failed. Bottom line. Sentimentality is not necessarily a weakness, but maybe a form of blindness or, better yet, forgiveness.

This gentleman lost me when he started trashing Larry V for writing a few articles with good comments about what people think of Bobby P.

Vaught has little to no respect from the rest of the news media in KY. His coverage of the UK coaching search has been beyond a joke. catmanjack wrote: This gentleman lost me when he started trashing Larry V for writing a few articles with good comments about what people think of Bobby P.

Re: Remember these words
In terms of the content of this thread. It's bizarre. JOker is a great guy, had a shot at his dream job, it didn't work out. to somehow argue that he deserves more time is crazy. He had his shot. He did poorly in every way besides being a good ambassador.

RE: Remember these words
No one has argued he deserved more time. Heck, I thought his fate was decided after the WKU game. This is about how Joker is treated NOW by the fan base. Some wish to continue to pile, even though Joker has been gracious and accepted the validity of his dismissal. He is a Kentucky guy, former player, assistant coach that brought some good years to the fans and a guy that loves this program like we all will hope the next coach will come to feel. He deserves to be treated like a Wildcat, with respect. He has been fired. As an HC, he is done. How we perceive him now should not only be through that prism. I do not know how I can explain it any better. But, I know that someone here will come back and contend he deserved to be fired, which has NOTHING to do with this thread. The players get it, even when some fans clearly do not.

RE: Remember these words
I hold no ill will towards joker and haven't piled on. The kids love him. That's great. But its' job to win and we need to move on and rally behind whoever gets the job. I don't disagree with a thing you've said. Badinage wrote: No one has argued he deserved more time. Heck, I thought his fate was decided after the WKU game. I think all media members in the state of KY are below average at best. So not sure there is any merit in there comments either. Hoptownukfan wrote: Vaught has little to no respect from the rest of the news media in KY.

Re: Remember these words
OK, here a some facts: 1) Joker Phillips will coach his last game at UK on Saturday. 2) Joker Phillips truly is a good man and a lot of the players love him. There. Facts. Now the opinion section. I know he's a great guy and that he has the best interests of the kids at heart. I also know that I am relieved that he will not be returning next season. I wish it would have worked out, but at the end of the day he is paid to coach football and in that regard he is just incapable and lost. He may a champion to the players, but not as a coach.
