ESPN Top 50 Coaches

ESPN Top 50 Coaches

They are down to the final two and it is between Cal and Billy D.  I must say I am shocked that ESPN kept Cal in it this long.  He absolutely deserves it but ESPN loves Coach K and Izzo.  Props to ESPN for giving Cal and Donovan the respect they deserve.

It's funny that they have him this high, especially after that piece about him being something like 9th or 10th in developing players.

I'm thinking their final three will be: Izzo 1, Calipari 2, Donovan 3.

They reversed it on you JDrum, but you got Cal right.

1) Donovan
2) Calipari
3) Izzo

Had a hunch they'd find a way to have Cal No. 2. If nothing else, it creates drama and clicks from people debating it. wink

I'm sure that there who actually believe that Donovan is the best.  I don't for a second think that he'd do what Cal has, if he ever coached at UK.  All of that's fine, because I see all three of these coaches as being in the places where their respective styles of basketball are the best fit tor their respective fan bases.

Re: ESPN Top 50 Coaches

Donovan does it at Florida where basketball is a pretty distant 2nd.  He does it without Rupp Arena and the 'basketball first' resources.  He does it without the "blue blood" budgets.  He does it without classes full of McDonalds All Americans and NBA ready talent. .

Maybe you're right.  Maybe Donovan wouldn't do as well at UK.  Who knows.  I think it is far more likely that Cal, Self, Izzo wouldn't do what Donovan consistently does, if they were ever at Florida.  None of them is making a Final Four without a single NBA draft pick.

I'm among those who think Billy D is a fantastic coach, but I don't agree with the end of your take here.

Now, the part about the NBA draft pick, that is an anomoly. That's not the "norm" for Donovan. He's always had pros on other successful teams. Cal did the same at UMass and Memphis, so it's a reach to say he couldn't do it at Florida. I have no doubt he'd be pretty successful in North Dakota. tongue
