Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

On paper, U of L is deeper, more experienced, more physically mature, and at home.  All of that points to U of L having an edge.  I think UK can win if team rebounding is solid and if guys make Louisville take contested shots.

My head says U of L in a game that may not be that close

My gut says UK could win this one if things break the right way (i.e. a player or two matures before our eyes and they follow the game plan)

"ifs" are not a great thing to have to count on for wins, but as a UK fan I think "ifs" at this stage of the season are the cats best hope.

I agree with that.  I also think that the guys are due for some strides to become visible.  I have hope for a win.

Yeah,  if you really look at it,  the birds are supposed to beat us by like 11 points,  they are ranked and talented,  if they would lose,  it could wreck their whole season.  While UK is unranked and is just wanting to put 40 minutes together as a team. You can smell their worrying when you go down Interstate 64,  well I guess it could be something else.  lol

I think this will give us a good indication how much "Camp Cal" has helped this team; hopefully we pull the upset

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

I seen that Dieng will be back in the starting lineup for this one, man they want it very bad.
I dont know what to expect, but this is what i have a feeling what will happen.
UL will try to slow this way down and make it a boxing match because the sloppier it is it favors them big time.
Wiltjer will be no help they are going to be on all over him and i mean all over him i hope i am way wrong with this one because if he is hitting then it opens up the game
Mays will hit a couple of threes and get about 12 points
goodwin will have his but ugly numbers
cauley will do good
poythress will do what he did against marshall, get into foul trouble unless wiltjer is hitting.
nerlens will do about the same as he did against marshall
and the main factor in this game will be harrow if he can control the game we squeak by 68 to 65 if he doesnt we lose 70-58
Like the old saying goes Basketball was invented in Massachusetts, Studied in Kansas but it was and always will be perfected at UK.

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

On paper our talent is much, much better.

On the court, they typically play harder than we have this year.

Assuming the refs don't foul out Russ Smith in the first half as he should have been many times this year, it will be close.   I've never seen a guy foul so much and not get called, yet flop and get the call the other way.

If they for some reason call the game correctly, Archie will shoot 50 FTs and we will win.  If they let Louisville play hack-a-cat, it could be incredibly frustrating to watch.

That's the way I see it, and if you disagree, that's perfectly fine with me.  biggrin

RE: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

I think UL will come out very aggressive. I think Pitino sees what happened in South Bend and he will try to recreate that. I think he has tried that in the past, but this UK team is susceptible.

I suspect we will see a lot of hip bumping and pressing from UL. UL has fouls to give, UK does not. In the back court, I would not doubt seeing Cal try to get Goodwin to post up whenever Russ or Siva is guarding him. Likewise, I could see Siva posting up Harrow, if the opportunity arose, given that Peyton plays a much more physical game, even if not tall.

Down low, more of the same. Pushing and shoving from UL.

I think the crowd will be as good as the Yum has seen. I think UL has a chance to really put a smack on this UK team.

RE: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

We are still trying to work the team play angle...currently, I think we still have several individuals out on the court; talented individuals, but not quite working as a coherent team yet. I think we will put up a great fight, and hope to at least have it close with 5 minutes to go....possible overtime. Prediction: Cards-71, Defending Champs-66. I won't mind the loss if this gamne shows some growth since playing Baylor, ND, and Duke. We have the talent, just young and not used to playing with each other totally yet....

RE: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

I think it funny that UL fans wanted to act like all the pressure was on UK at the Final Four last year, when BOTH teams were in the final four.

But, I disagree that UK needs this win.  In fact, I would be highly surprised if this very young UK team could beat such an experienced team this time of year.  I think this has potential for a lopsided UL victory, but will be happy if UK can keep it competitive.

The upside on this Cats team is still really huge.  I think they are just now beginning to play together.  This victory is not needed.

They should play the game on an aircraft carrier that has sailed into Chineese waters so maybe it will get sunk.

I agree, the full court body rides, and all the reaches.... should be called every time. I am all for allowing light contact, but when the contact prevents a players ability to control the ball...its a foul.

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

This game will define Harrows season if he wants to get the scared skinny kid (monkey) off his back this will be his game if not could be a very long day for him.  Poythress/Witjer will have to have the best game of this young season for Kentucky to win.  UK has to many "IF's" to win this I say Louisville by 10, but agree the pressure is on Louisville.

Would it be to much to ask for everyone to put funkbrothers on ignore since there are zero mod's on this board...

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

I don't think the Cats will win this one. And I also don't think this game will make or break the season. UK just needs to play hard a make a game of it. Unfortunately, UL is playing very well and has a very experienced team. Their defense reminds me of our '96 defense.

I saw a thread on the Cardinal Authority forums where some jackleg said Harrow was turnover-prone. I actually laughed out loud on that one.

RE: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

Neither team has any significant minute players from Kentucky, except SB for UL. So, it is likely that neither team has an innate passion for this rivalry that predated their experiences in college. The UK players surely will be motivated to show well on the road against a top five team. But, this UL team has senior and juniors that have never beaten UK and have the revenge of the Final Four. They will be highly motivated, even though the UK team they face has only one returning player who got minutes in that game. While there is more pressure on UL to win, they probably have more passion for this particular game.

Less than 24 hours until game time.  I don't know about you but I'm pretty excited!!  I think we have a chance.  I saw Louisville in the first half against Memphis and they looked horrible.  Let's get excited and give our guys a chance to prove themselves on the court.  This could change our outlook on the rest of the season!

Jgraul I did not say it would make or break UK season, (Harrow).  If he can't stand up against the Louisville pressure it could set him back.

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

According to my stats, UK is about 5 points better than UL on a neutral floor, in spite of their W-L records.  With the game on Louisville's home court, that advantage is next to nothing, but I still think UK wins the game unless UL gets away with murder with no fouls called.  We all saw Pitino's game plan the last time we played in Louisville.  I expect more of the same, maybe a LOT more.  Hopefully the refs keep the game under control from the tip-off.

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

Uk will get into foul trouble way before Louisville.  Kentucky has to play way better than we have so far to win, but we are getting better each game, just as long as this trend continues the out come of this game will not matter.

Louisville has a 2.1 fouls called per game advantage over their opponents (their opponents get called for two more per game).  UK has a 3.5 fouls called per game advantage.

RE: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

Thought UK looked improved. FTs and bad perimeter passing against an overly agressive defense in the passing lanes made the difference in this game. Those are correctable. Having Harrow improving is key. Alex needs to become an assassin and start to play violent. He has the body and hops to hurt people around the rim. An infusion of Dennis Rodman would be nice. And, FT lessons for him and WCS. Good to see the team is still climbing the learning curve.

You can't play Willie at the end of a game if he can't hit free throws.  Stats say he missed four out of four, but really he missed 6 out of 6, because of lane violations.  Someone turned the on switch for Archie in the last part of the second half but Alex is still a no show when it comes to being an asset.  Ryan is probably playing as well as we can expect him to.

Re: Thoughts on the UK - U of L Game?

Wasnt surprised by the outcome but was suprised UK made it that close. The positives were that we all know the have the ability to morph into a final four team. I like the twin tower starting line up(which is the opposite of what I felt about it before the season) and Wiltijer coming off he bench brings scoring to the second unit.

Mays needs to start sharing time with Hood (unless hood has shown nothing in practice) since he was brought in as a shooter and showed that he is not consistant as that in big games. This team still reminds me of the Knight led team which is a scary team. People might need to accept that the switch won't come on for Alex until he's in the NBA so in the mean time appreciate the things he does and hope he can go all out more often. Harrow showed a lot this game and with him playing like that UK has a punchers chance at going very far. This was the best or second best defense UK will see all year(Duke) and I have no doubt that they will get better at handling things and win a very down/winnable SEC pretty easily

You could say Chane is from KY. He played basketball in Bowling Green but was he calls Cincinnati home.

Other that the state of KY has not produced many great players for UL or UK to get in recent years.
