Postgame Thoughts: WKU 59, BGSU 31

Not perfect, but it will do for a first run. I will have a more detailed analysis/explanation tomorrow.

Re: Final Box: WKU 59, BGSU 31

Our defense surprised me at half holding the Falcons to only 10.  I can't figure out how good/bad BGSU's offense is and how good WKU's defense is after watching the game tonight.

No way Doughty throws for 560+ yards again this season but he was in a zone tonight.  Of course,
one main reason for that was our offensive line was awesome tonight.

Allen showed glimpses tonight but struggled quite a bit too.  A lot of it was play selection for him.  We have to figure out how to use Leon Allen who is by far better running off tackle than straight up the middle.
Ace Wells showed me some promise tonight too.

Not too much to say because I am still in shock but our receivers are by far the best I have ever seen in my 40 years of watching WKU football.  So many weapons that it's scary.  I know all the cards were falling in our direction tonight but 46-56 completions with 0 interceptions is incredible.  Never have I witnessed a performance in L.T. Smith Stadium by any WKU QB or opposing QB.  Totally awesome performance by Brandon Doughty.

we're much more explosive on the perimeter. great playcalls to get doughty going early. the D played well early, but didn't like our 3 down linemen sets later in the game. huge way to start the season and Brohm era.

Like Brandon said in the post game, don't get too high on the wins, but man it's hard not to after a night like tonight.

I don't expect Brandon to have nights like this again, but if you take a real look at what he did, most of those plays are pretty replicable. He made all the throws he is supposed to. Our offense is designed to allow him to make the throws that we know he can make. All he has to do is make them.

The difference between this year and last year though is that we have a ridiculous amount of weapons at WR and TE. Taywan Taylor is on another level. His route running tonight was impeccable. He was in the right spot every time. Jared Dangerfield was the recruit I was most excited about, and he did not disappoint. He offers us something we haven't really had before in a sizable WR who also has some speed. And he showed what he can do tonight. Loved watching him play.

The defense also performed much better than I expected in what will be a very good BGSU offense the rest of the year. Definitely some things to clean up there though. Need to get a little better play from Prince Charles and whoever is playing nickel for us. They didn't throw Cam Thomas' way many times tonight, and I think that's what we'll see from most teams. They'll try to go after Prince because Cam is gonna shut people down. But for his first real action for us Prince wasn't too bad.

Absolutely great night to be a Tops fan though. Cant wait to see what we do in Champaign next week.

Can't judge the defense on this game BG lined up after every tackle and no time to switch packages or shifts and hardly any blitzing. Disappointed in a few plays where we failed to wrap up and a couple where we were totally out of position but other than that I think we will be OK on defense.

Same thing with Allen's running we were in the spread a lot more than last year and BG made it their mission to stop our running game...first game of 2013 AA only had 99 yards on 20 carries. I will be shocked if Wales doesn't have a couple 100 yard games this year. He sees the hole better than any RB we have.

I said it for a month now....

Johnson would not be the best QB in this game

First, if you don't have season tickets and can make it to home games, you better get them NOW. Trust me, I've seen first hand ticket demand just swamp availability.

As far as the Defense, first game looked  pretty dxmn good IMO for the first game of the season (from what I head on the radio and read). Continuity really paid of for WKU.

As long as everyone stays healthy, adjustment will be made to tighten it up.

Look at your O and remember your D is facing that in practice. They may not turn into a shut down d, but they'll get their stops and keep the other team in check.

Wow! That's it, just wow!

i didn't dream we'd be this good, this quickly. Coach Brohm for president, until he loses a game. No, just kidding, I'm in it for the long haul. I hereby officially apologize for my lack of faith and realize my preseason prediction was badly flawed. I didn't predict a bad season, still bowl eligible, but now I don't know what to expect.

I think I'll go troll the Middle board. ;-)

Re: Postgame Thoughts: WKU 59, BGSU 31

Take-A-Ways from yesterday's game.

1.  The OL made it possible for Doughty to have the time he needed.  Excellent play by the hogs.  I saw Brandon Ray limp off late.  I hope he is okay.  We don't have a ton of experienced depth for our OL.

2. Doughty showed that he was in command of the offense.  He was quoted earlier this week as saying "Last year I was trying to figure out what we were going to call but not always understanding why.  This year I know what we need to call and why we are calling it.  He showed patience and poise all the way.  He also has a good handle on not getting to high but playing each possession. We will see what he's really made of next week in Champagne, Illinois.  I think he's up for the challenge.

3. Our receivers were sure handed and really blocked for one another down field. The one dropped long bomb was unfortunate because Doughty had it timed perfectly but we are getting better.   Taywan Taylor was huge for us last night and Jared Dangerfield and Antwane Grant were also amazing.  Then  you had McNeal, German and Norris picking up some clutch receptions too.

4. Our rushing game showed some signs of post Andrews stress.  IMHO, Allen is going to grow up quickly but he doesn't see the field quite as well as AA did at this point.  Some of that comes with experience.  Allen seems to run better off tackle than up the middle.  He also does well if he can turn the corner on a  sweep or a screen.   Ace Wales showed me some good moves and he definitely has dangerous speed.   No doubt, this offense is geared for Doughty and the passing game but I hope we can see  a little more consistency in the running game as we go along.

5. Our defense was impressive the 1st quarter.  Shutting them out early was key to giving us an edge.  The 2nd and 3rd quarter defense wasn't pretty.  We gave up 10 and 14 points and it looked like we were losing ground fast.  Then, late in the 3rd quarter we banged up their QB a little and started getting to him more and were able to slow them down to only 7 4th quarter points.  We can't give up 31 points every game and expect to win but it was our first game with a lot of new faces and we hung in there.

6. Coaching and game management were excellent.  The "Brohm Squad" looked smooth in their play calling and did a great job of managing the clock at the end of the 1st half, not allowing them to get the ball back after we kicked the field goal.  Also, in the fourth quarter Brohm did a great job of slowing it down and running down the clock on the last two drives.  I was very impressed with how prepared our team was too.  We had 7 penalties but not nearly as bad as BGSU's 11 penalties.

7. The crowd was decent.  They said 17,000 and I am not sure how accurate that was but the stands were pretty full.    The crowd was in to it the first half but became complacent in the 3rd quarter when BGSU was trying to make a come back.   The 4th quarter the crowd was celebrating pretty well and gave Doughty a standing "O" when they announced his record breaking performance.

8. Winning this 1st game was a huge confidence builder and even though we may not see 700 yards in a game the rest of the season, I know the CUSA coaches took notice of what we did last night.  I guarantee you people took notice of our performance against a formidable opponent.

I was really impressed with Dangerfiled not only catching the ball but his blocking down the field....He really helped Taylor on a couple of those yards after the catch plays.....

Really hope we do not have a major let down this Saturday and keep this going! If so the buzz is really going to be there and excitement of what this team can do...

It has occurred to me in hindsight that in order to have a 700 yard game, the opponent has to help. No way in hell anyone could do that against a grind it out bruising, running, four yards and a cloud of dust type team. They keep the ball too long. BGSU inadvertently cooperated by giving the ball back to us quickly whether successful or not.
