Exhibition Game Vs. Univ of Bridgeport TONIGHT @ 7:30pm
http://www.connpost.com/sports/ci_13713844 dunno about the reports of AJ now standing 6'10".... What are looking for tonight? For me, a much better (read: cleaner) effort than what we saw in AH two weeks ago. Maybe we'll see how Cooley expects to run the point this year... Should be interesting...

My best guess on the most probable starting line-up: Needham - PG Jordan - 2G Turner - SF S. Johnson - PF A. Johnson - C Of course if Edney's ankle is up to it, then he would get the wing start over Turner. And there is a chance that Olander would start instead of S. Johnson. It should be interesting. Actually, Evanovich might start over Shimeek.

I think you give the nods to Olander and Evanovich...

RE: Exhibition Game Vs. Univ of Bridgeport TONIGHT @ 7:30pm
I want us to perform better as a unit than Syracuse did against LeMoyne earlier this week. Without Nero and Hawkins -- I think it's most important that whoever is playing the point establish himself as a player that can run the offense effectively and kick butt of anyone on our team who's f***ing up his responsibilities. Regardless of who's the point guard -- the entire team needs to show intensity and hustle on defense and in rebounding. Establishing hustle and intensity right from the first "game" as constants of Fairfield basketball this season would be a good way to start things off for us.

RE: Exhibition Game Vs. Univ of Bridgeport TONIGHT @ 7:30pm
The starting line-up could be anything at this point, but I would not be surprised if Cooley went with the "experienced" team
PG Turner 2G Jordan SF Edney PF Evanovich CC AJ The big question is if we use this Exhibition game to play everyone equally to evaluate talent. Or does Cooley use this game to play his prospective starters more...... in order to build Chemistry. IMO, some of the ballhandling and sloppiness that occurred in the scrimmage was due to a lack of Chemistry. The Chemistry issue was due to inuries, inexperienced frosh, and just not a lot of practive time.
We still have the Stonehill exhibition to build Chemistry, but I would like to see us play the 2nd half of Bridgeport using our prospective Starters.

Is Johnson really 6'10" or was that a typo? Wow, he and Olander have the potential to be a real force on the glass this season, something that was missing at times last year.

AJ is only 6-8.... its a typo
I do agree that we have to establish who our PG is ASAP, so that player establishes his role as the person that is running the team. And visa-versa..... the team needs to know how that PG operates. Needham and Turner are at the opposite ends of the spectrum on style of play and aggressiveness. But the bottom line is that Needham is loaded with talent, and Turner has limitations to his game. The only question mark is that Needham has not proved he can run this team...... I would would give him 2 exhibitions to prove that he can or can't.

We really have been spoiled the past couple of years. It sounds like the Mirror is having difficulty finding the next generation of sports reporters. The guys who did the blogging and glogging the past two years are now running the Mirror and have limited time for sports coverage. Chris Simmons actually wrote a column last week basically pleading for students interested in sports journalism to join the Mirror. I find it hard to believe they are having difficulty finding new writers with the great journalism program. You would think that Jack Cavanaugh's Sports Journalism course would inspire one or two students a year. The athletic department would be wise to encourage some students to step up as the Mirror coverage is priceless. http://fairfieldmirror.com/200...n-maac-tourney/

I am on the glogging...... thanks Stago for the heads-up. I almost gave up all hope.
Everyone should go to Stago's link, its a great job by Mirror staff. Usually I am at the game, or listening to WVOF..... so this is an unexpected pleasure. Except we are playing awful.

Well..... they at least should have dominated on the boards and on defense. I expected some rusty offense with Hawk out, Edney only part time, and frosh learning their trade at guard. But for Bridgeport to score 76 points is inexcusable. It also sounded like they out-rebounded us.

Both frosh guards (Needham and Nickerson) and the red-shirt Shimeek got a lot of PT. Yes they are talented, but can 3 players who only have HS experience beat a Division II team???? More importantly, where is our leadership from the upperclassmen..... Jordan, Evanovich and AJ.
Shimeek and Needham might have had the best game on the team, which is scary because they are frosh. Jordan seemed to play OK, but he has to do more. But where is the defense and physical play. Would like to hear some LIVE reports, and the Mirror will also have Press conference coverage and Post game analysis.

Link to Boxscore
purpleknights.bridgeport.edu/I...tball/exbpt.htm - We get out-rebounded 43-35..... should not happen - AJ Olander goes 5 of 17 from the field, 2-5 from FT line, and 13 rebounds in 42 minutes - Only 11 turnovers, but only 11 assists. All the assists came from guards..... thats not good. - Shimeek 12pts, 6rebs, and 2 blocks in 24 minutes - Evanovich 8 pts in only 10 minutes - Needham and Jordan both play 31 minutes. Jordan goes 5-8 for 13 pts..... nice game, but need more than 8 shots

I can understand Peanut's struggles tonight, but, Ryan is now in his third year and doesn't seem to be progressing offensively. If these guys are going to continue to fumble the ball, I think we would be more effective with an offense that stretches the opposing defense and opens lanes for our better offensive wings and guards.

Back from Bridgeport.
Let's just say that if the MAAC coaches saw the team tonight, they would not have picked us fourth.

Normally I wouldn't advise people to give up on a season after an exhibition loss. And I wouldn't give up on this season either. I would just give up on any hope of finishing better than 7th in the conference. We will be lucky to win 9 games this year. Evanovich does not deserve the playing time he gets. Put him in for 5-10 minutes, let him chuck up some 3s, and let it be done with. I'd rather see Grezck and Olander get the majority of these minutes. Our offense is gonna be atrocious. Based on the coaching staff and the skills of our players, this is a given. But to have our defense give up 76 points to the mighty UB? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???????????

RE: Exhibition Game Vs. Univ of Bridgeport TONIGHT @ 7:30pm
Just got back myself after getting caught in that nightmare construction delay by Southport, took me an extra 30 minutes to get home. Oh well, onto the game.... Needham, Jordan and Shimeek Johnson were the only people being aggressive on offense, and they all 3 got a lot of minutes. Needham is also clearly the vocal leader on the court, he really got on Olander to finish strong after he missed a layup. Needham is also FAST, he outran the entire UB defense several times for layups. Now on to the bad; shocking how UB took it to us inside. Their guards penetrated with no fear and got little resistance. Our centers and forwards did not look good on offense. Olander and AJ had trouble all night long, I can't even count the number of walks and missed layups inside the lane. We also looked completely lost when UB went zone, we ran out the shot clock and everyone looked confused. We need to work on this. I saw a lot of effort and Needham & Jordan were fantastic. Amazing to see Needham already the leader on the court, we won't miss Han at all. But our outside shooting is bad, our interior defense was soft and AJ & Olander need to FINISH around the basket.

Elsberry's exhibition report. Similar report I just over the phone..... a lot of substitution at beginning of the game. Not a lot of shooters and we had trouble when going to the hoop and finishing. Hawkins could be cleared to play this weekend, but Edney limping off the court is not a good sign. Cooley challenges his teams physicality by saying he will bring Pink pillows to the game for them. WOW..... a lot to improve in a short time frame. blog.ctnews.com/elsberry/2009/...ition-a-report/
