Although I'm not a fan of Bergdahl, I am a fan of no man left behind. Whether he's a traitor, coward, deserter, or whatever. I'm glad we got him. We can figure out the rest when he stands trial.

Is he left behind if he willfully walked away?

And are five terrorists worth a guy that hates the US?

Willfully walked away is hard to know without a trial. And I don't know if he hates the US. Maybe, he hates US policies. What we do know, for some reason, he wanted to come back home.

He will be tried for AWOL. If convicted, will spend 2 to 5 years in prison.

As long as a soldier doesn't turn against us, aka. Benedict Arnold, then I want to see him come home.

That's just my opinion, I know I'm not in the majority with most Conservatives. And that's fine. We don't have to agree on 100% of stuff.

Yeah, he wasn't exactly left behind or captured. He walked off and good soldiers were killed trying to recover his sorry ass. The dude should be a goat turd.

In general I agree but we gave up five high level guys for one. Two issues with this, it teaches the enemy we are willing to trade which leads to more abductions and five for one is not a good deal any way you spin it.

What if we turned the five guys and their actually CIA implants into terrorist cells? Or, we put trackers with cyanide in them and we can kill them at any time unless they help us? Or, we just put trackers on them? Or, O'Bama had beers with them and made sure everything is ok?

Mallred, you are waaaayyy off on this. The guy is a deserter and men died because of it. He deserves nothing but the trial to convict him.

Mallred, I agrre with you waaay more than I don't.  But on this one, you are waaay off base, IMO.  Yes, I agree about bringing everyone home, dead or alvive.  But only if it makes sense and is practical to do so.

We left over 125,000 BRAVE Americans who died in combat during WWI/WWII and we buried them in cemetery near where they died.  We did not bring them home to CONUS.

Bowe Bergdahl should have been shot by a firing squad and buried in Afganistan, the country he loved so much..

Re: Photo of smiling Bowe Bergdahl posing with Taliban official

It has been said before, at least concerning WW2, that non torture, and capture / trade policies, actually protect the lives of soldiers (albeit on both sides).  But in essence, it offers diffusion of engagements when an opponent doesn't fear sure death, torture, humiliation if captured, therefore, willingness to peacefully surrender is more likely to occur.  This reduces the fight till the last ounce of life scenerios which result in more casualties of troops (again on both sides).  Then it also gives enemies reason to capture our troops and hold them, rather than torture / behead as they can trade.  That's how I've heard the importance of the Treaty of Versailles described with regard to POWs.  Hearing it explained that way, I tend to agree with it.  I'll defer to other military folks in here who've experienced it.

I'll say, I think Bowe deserves a day in court and an end to the court of news flavored opinion.

Edit - I'll add, the clearest evidence of this in my lifetime is the first war in Iraq.  When Cookie's squadrons got entire tank divisions to surrender to airplanes without any sight of US ground troops.  Just straight up stopped and waived white flags.

This thread stopped just and I mean just short of arguing how we should have cut his head off to deter others.

Sound familiar?

Meanwhiles, most if not all are talking out of their ass.

IF he deserted then he should stand trial and IF found guilty he should pay...perhaps the ultimate price. All the ignorant judgement based on bs news media between here and there is a damn shame!

I agree 5 for 1 is a shite deal...but I seem to remember a common quote...would trade a thousand of them for one American. Where did that sentiment go? I also remember a ton of "no man left behind" which was and is BS...the hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Too quick to judge IMO...let it play out. My thought is, very little to win eitherwise.

You're treading very thin ice, bud.

The evidence points to desertion, but you're saying let it play out rather than listen to the media. Which way do you want it? Like it or not, the media is the mouthpiece....but it's also the forum for his colleagues to tell their side, regrettably.

I would trade a thousand? He's not perceived as American...that's why.
'No man left behind' is BS...tell that to one of your military 'friends'....and tell him/her it's hypocrisy. Oh, yeah, don't forget to duck.

I support the notion. It's BS because the gov has, does, and will again. Not a shot at our service men and women.

FTR, I THINK he deserted as well. All the more reason to bring him home and try his butt for it.

Re: Photo of smiling Bowe Bergdahl posing with Taliban official

Everyone deserves their day in court. If he did leave on his own will, then he should get the maximum consequence. It is a damn shame that men had to die when they tried to find him...but we all raise our hands and swear to obey the orders of those above them...sometimes those orders are crap.

The 5 for 1 thing is extremely suspicious.

Yeah, I apologize if I offended anyone. Too much reading of FB comments on political posts yesterday.

That crap is maddening and had me in a piss poor mood.

IMHO, the time for investigation was soon after his going missing.  If we determined he was a deserter, this whole mess never happens.   If we determined he was kidnapped, or even found that we couldn't be sure, then I have to say I'm leaning on the "no man left behind" side.

I don't like the negotiating with a terrorist organization.   These sort of "as the war ends" swaps are generally done with legitimate governing bodies or nations, not terrorists.    And that leaves me with wondering if we aren't causing future headaches.

But I'm honestly torn on this, given the one assumption that we're not treating this as a desertion.
