See ya Cantor Post Rating (1 vote)

I am not sure this is a good thing, or what it says about the elections this year, but I did not like the guy. I think the GOP doesn't have as comfortable a lead as they think going into the midterms though.

Whenever I saw Cantor, I saw the poster child for 'me first' and 'arrogant'. He was a total turn-off.

ome of the more telling highlights from the editorial:

"Cantor and his staff both lost the trust of conservatives and constituents. They broke promises, made bad deals, and left many feeling very, very betrayed."

"
He and his staff have repeatedly antagonized conservatives. One conservative recently told me that Cantor's staff were the "biggest bunch of a**holes on the Hill."

"Much of it was because of Cantor's hubris and the arrogance of his top staffers. He could not be touched and he could not be defeated. He knew it and they knew it. "

I think the media coverage is a little overblown. If you look at primary races nationwide. The Tea Party got beat consistently. They won a big one, but their overall track record was poor.

Cantor's campaign spent more at steakhouses than his challenger, economics professor Dave Brat, spent on his entire campaign, a mind-boggling stat that was first noted by The New York Times.

I don't believe the Tea Party won the election, I believe disgruntled Republicans/Conservatives made the difference. Many conservatives are fed up with the actions of some Senators and Representatives who forget why they were sent to Washington.

I bet there was probably some very influential silent support behind Brat (the conspiracy theorist in me thinks this was more about some powerful people wanting Cantor gone).

Re: See ya Cantor

also...dems/repubs can cross over in VA...glad we finally stopped that nonsense in SC...

how many dems voted for the tea party leaning guy...to upset the apple cart...

my last vote tuesday, we had to declare...even got handed a repub card on my part to make sure the voting booth person plugged in the proper data cartridge....

added: also a funny thing this time...here in SC...the dems got to vote on 3 proposals...like medical weed and a few others...we pubs got to vote on eliminating the state income tax and life at conception....somehow, if enough votes are gathered on either side...it makes the big ballot this november...

hmmmm...

Re: See ya Cantor

A guy like Cantor doesn't go down like this without some help.  House majority leader?  That's nuts.  Did you see the campaign staff of two for Brat?

This is the equivalent of the Miracle on Ice back in 1980.

But hey, maybe the guy and his staff are just that lazy.  You give me $5MM vs your $300K and I'll beat you 99% of the time.

Re: See ya Cantor

I don't know how you really get more Right than Cantor. But, guy didn't even visit his district. He just seemed like an arrogant dick. My wife and I have been joking about how much ass kissing his staff is having to do right now to get new jobs, especially with how they've treated every other rank and file members staffs. It's probably a good episode of Veep and House of Cards rolled into one. The one thing I can't stand are arrogant folks. Love to see them fall on their face.

Re: See ya Cantor

Cantor is very unpopular here. Combine that with a motivated libertarian base and a cocky incumbent and you have a shocking defeat. Brat took a page from Obama and dominated the social media campaigning. Maybe his professor experience helped bc he seemed to connect with the youngins.

Brat lived next to one of my good friends for several years. He said Brat was a genuine dude's dude, the kind you enjoy chillaxin and having a beer with. Cantor was a snob.

But I would not rule out a ton of Dems voting for him.

Re: See ya Cantor Post Rating (1 vote)

There is a balancing act between home and hill that Cantor did not do very well. There is another thing to consider too, and that's the radical nature of primary votes. In both parties, you tend to get the more passionate (and by default more anti-establishment, more extreme) voters to the polls for primaries. That's especially true for Republicans, who vote at a higher clip than Democrats anyway.

David Brat won with 36,110 votes, or 55.5%. Cantor had 28,898 votes, or 44.5%. In total, that's 65,008 votes in a district of 760,000+ people. According to the Virginia State Board of Elections, there are 504,895 registered voters in this district, a primarily Republican one.

What that means is only about 12.8% of registered voters actually bothered to even vote in this primary. Even if you say the district is 50/50 Republican and Democrat, which it is pretty handily not, that would mean a MAX of 25.6% of all Republicans in that district voted in this election, assuming no Democrats voted.

Using that number, you could say that about 14.3% of the district's Republicans voted for Brat, and and about 11.3% voted for Cantor, with 74.4% not voting at all. That third number is almost certainly much higher, but it is definitely not lower.

If you do want to assume the facts that it is a majority Republican district and that some Dems probably voted in the primary, that is only worse for Republicans, because it means even fewer Republicans bothered to participate in the election. The fact of the matter is, when you leave this things to small fringe voting bloc, especially in the age of social media where getting your name out there is easier than ever, crazy things will happen. That's what happened here.

^ bob beckel completely disagrees with you...he is more agast at the dem turnout  (all states)...which, to him means....complete lack of interest...beyond lack of interest...

ie, pubs win...

however...bob is probably like me...about to take the retirement chair and let you kids fook it up as well as we did...
