White House Releases Name of CIA Station Chief in Afghanistan

White House Releases Name of CIA Station Chief in Afghanistan

(CNN) -- The White House accidentally revealed the name of the CIA's top intelligence official in Afghanistan to some 6,000 journalists.

The identity was on a list of people attending a military briefing for President Barack Obama during his surprise visit to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan on Sunday.

It's common for such lists to be given to the media, but names of intelligence officials are almost always not provided. In this case, the individual's name was listed next to the title, "Chief of Station."

The print pool reporter -- a journalist allowed access to or information about an event who relays it to the rest of the media -- copied and pasted the list that was provided by the White House.
Print pool reports are then distributed by the White House press office, which does not edit them, to a media list.

In this case, the same reporter, who works for the Washington Post, noticed the unusual entry after the list was distributed and then checked with officials.

The White House then distributed a shorter list from a different reporter that did not include the station chief's name.

A station chief heads the CIA's office in a foreign country, establishing a relationship with its host intelligence service and overseeing agency activities.

The identity of station chiefs, like most CIA officers, are rarely disclosed to protect them and their ability to operate secretly.

Given the potentially dangerous nature of the situation, CNN has not broadcast or published online the name of the official.

"This is a problem."

The official asked if Wilson would write another pool report, asking journalists to disregard the previous report that contained the list with the chief of station's name. Wilson said he was open to the request and sent the White House a new report. He said he was unsure whether that report was distributed.

The new list, Wilson said, was distributed by a separate pool report that included details from Obama's speech to the troops. That report included a shorter list of names with a note saying, "this is the correct list of participants."

Privately administration officials are alarmed about the incident, but so far the White House and CIA officials have declined to comment publicly.

Given the potentially dangerous nature of the situation, CNN has not broadcast or published online the name of the official.

In the most recent case before this one, the Bush administration infamously leaked the name of former CIA officer Valerie Plame to a journalist in 2003.

Plame tweeted on Monday that the White House's mistake this past weekend is "astonishing."

Wait, didn't we start a political witch hunt when the last administration did this?

The Cheney and Scooter Libby incident was politically motivated...this seems like someone just made a mistake.  Big difference.

Remind me again of the story. Honestly, its one of those stories I didn't pay any attention to.

Cheney and Libby got pissed at a politician for opposing the reasons for war with Iraq...one month later, his wife was outed via a "leak."

I agree with MT.

The situations are not the same, but that doesn't mean both are not bad.

Bad yes...but not a huge deal from an intel point.  Once you get to station chief, you are a known commodity to the host nation you are in.  You are a liaison and are dealing with other heads of intel agencies.  More just dangerous for the family and those without the intel sources to find out by other means.  The biggest concern with this is the safety of the officer and his family.

valerie was outed by robert novack in an article...i never understood how/why scooter got so creamed on this one, iirc he was just repeating what was already out there...in the novack article...

valerie's husband was an ex ambassdor, and as the article again says (bears repeating)...they were way more interested in the DC cocktail circuit, and fame than her career at the CIA...

also a big diff between an analyst in the building (who enjoys the spotlight of the DC circuit) verses a station chief out in indian country...

My memory was that Scooter was never implicated in the outing, but didn't cooperate with Congress so was found in contempt, or guilty of obstruction, right?

Is the story that the Bush administration leaked it to Novack inetentionally?

As for it being different, I saw one comment.  It's the same mistake, we're just debating if political motivations are are a better or worse reason than incompetence.

Valarie Plame and her husband are 2 no-goods.  She was NOT a CIA undercover operative at the time her husband made a fact finding trip to Niger looking for "Yellow Cake" and her identity came out.  She worked in the CIA but not in jobs the liberal MSM painted her to be.  She was a washed up nothing burger.

YES, she was outed, but not as an under cover sneaky-pete in deep cover.

Thats the real story...

I have never seen Jack Bauer spread his legs to get info. Truth be known I think Bauer may be a little light in the loafers.
