Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

I hate the Game Start Times.  I do not like getting home from a football game after midnight!!!!  I bitched about midweek games before, so now we have all the games on Fridays and Saturdays, but it looks like every Saturday game could start after 8:00.   Probably no daylight games.  I miss those morning tailgates.

Four out of the first six games are on the road, but four out of the last six games are on the Blue.
Could be a very tough season for the Broncos.  In the land of the Broncos, an 8-4 season is devastating.
Lot of spoiled fans up here.  Really like our coaching staff and we will have some great new guys playing on the blue, but every home game will be against a team that played in a bowl game.   No freebies!

So I am thinking 8 and 4 or maybe 9 and 3.   By mid season, the Broncos should be a decent team, the schedule is tough.......don't like playing Wyoming in Laramie late November....wonder if that will be a night game!!!!

Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

for Boise:

Mississippi likely L
Colorado State likely W
UConn likely W
Louisiana-Lafayette likely W
Air Force likely W
Nevada tossup
Fresno State likely W
BYU likely W
New Mexico likely W
San Diego State likely W
Wyoming likely W
Utah State likely W

lots of "likely W"'s on the schedule, but actually winning them all seems like a reach. 8-4 not a bad guess, but 9-3 would definitely be on optimistic side IMO. OTOH, the books ( compu-picks.com/2014Offseason/20140723_Lines.html ) show 9-3 at even over-under vig, so the books are more optimistic for Boise than I am.

Interesting Website.  I have never seen it before.   I will have to spend some time there.
Would not surprise me if Boise went 10 - 2 either.
A 6-6 season WOULD Shock me.
The first Boise State game I ever saw was a 17to 7 loss to Linfield College in 1968 in old Bronco Stadium.
Have not seen them lose very often in Boise since that time.   I am almost always to see the Broncos lose at home.......

I, obviously really like your projection.
I would also like to see 7 MWC team go to Bowl games this season.

I see Boise State and USU both having a great shot at a 10-2 season this year.

BYU was favored in every game on the schedule in one early Vegas look, but that is much, MUCH easier said than done. Roadies at Texas and UCF are beasts, as well as the local meat-n-potatoes that are tough to chew themselves...

The game on the Blue will be interesting this year as the Broncos were embarrassed in Provo last year.

Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

UTEP - Track meet last year. We can beat them at home.
Arizona State - There will be some fight but ASU will out last us late.
NMSU - Still has a long way to go. Last year's 66-17 win will be much closer.
Fresno - Fresno's offense have a few new looks and feels, they return much defense, but we've added D. Calling the upset.
UTSA - Another squad with quite a bit of Texas-sized D but without their 4-year signal caller. We can take them.
SDSU - We had SDSU in their house but lost 35-30. We will take them at home.
AFA - Still rebuilding, AFA has a ways to go. UNM's defense additions bring us home.
UNLV - I don't know where to gauge UNLV, Sherry is probably starting but last year was a track meet. Close loss.
BSU - We will give BSU hell, but the game later in the year may not put UNM at full strength. Close loss. Again.
USU- With chuckie and that defense. No way. Loss.
CSU - We will need this game for bowl eligibility in many scenarios. They lose lineman and backs but have a good squad. Close win.
WYO - Wyoming will be happy to end the season by now. We do not Cinderella a difficult season for them with precious win.

That's 8-4 with one upset. That's way, way ahead of schedule. 6-6 is very close to that. 4-8 is possible.

New Mexico Bowl. They'll claw and fight until we get a berth there, even if we're third in the mountain division.

But the breakout begins tomorrow in camp!

Boise State and Texas are two teams BYU has to play this season that are VERY DIFFERENT when facing them on their own home turf.

Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

at Ole Miss - loss
Colo St - win*
at UConn - win
La-La - win
at Air Force - win
at Nevada - win*
Fresno - win*
BYU - loss*
at New Mexico - win
SDSU - win*
at Wyoming - win
Utah State - win*

Wouldn't be completely surprised to see us go 10-2 but I think it would be quite the accomplishment.

BYU I think will be a very good team this year, despite what their record might be when they get to Boise. They have a tough schedule. We were throttled last year in Provo and Taysom will be that much better this year. I think it'll be a close game with the Cougars coming out on top but I can also see us winning if we play our absolute best.

Teams like Fresno and SDSU now know what it's like to beat Boise. We're not invincible anymore. SDSU's defense has always given us fits but Grant played them last year so hopefully he's learned a few things. Fresno's defense should be very good and we'll see how their qb play comes along. I have us winning both of these games right now but we'll see.

Now we've got a few surprise teams. Colorado State is coming off a huge bowl win and I feel there is a lot of momentum with the program right now. Playing at Nevada is always hard it seems and the Utah State game will be for all the marbles in the Mtn division.

The games with a * are ones I could see going either way possibly. Not all of them but I just get the feeling that one team is going to surprise the Broncos this season. The competition level is much higher now. No more blowing teams out by 40 points. I would be absolutely thrilled with 10-2, or even 11-1 is a possibility, but I think realistically we'll end the season 9-3.

This is the year Fresno finally defeats Boise on "The Blue". The last time Fresno played Boise on "The Blue" the score was actually closer than the game. Boise rattled Carr and had their way with Carr on "The Blue". Connette is a different breed-of-cat. He won't "rattle" and is a "grinder". ...something Boise is not used to seeing out of Fresno.

It has been a long time coming Fresno defeating Boise on "The Blue". Fresno's win over USC first game of the season will instill a Fresno confidence and swagger not seen since the Jim Sweeney years. The only thing which sort of pours a little cold-water on my scenario is Fresno has a tough travel schedule before facing a what will be well rested Boise.

I'd like to redeem the 32-29 loss to Boise the last time we played them at home. We spotted 21 points off of short fields...directly from three turnovers. Three more turnovers got us back into the game late.

It's just too late in the year (Nov) to tell if we're full strength or not. Needless to say we should be a handful. We got some great additions to the defense and gutted the coaching staff on that side of the ball.

Sorry ....Volklgirl already penciled in a loss to BYU on the Blue.......Boise State cannot lose 2 games on the Blue in one season.

The way I look at is that Boise lost to SDSU and Fresno last year.   Turnovers were the difference in both games.
So...we need some payback......biggrin

That was a very scary game   for Bronco fans.   Give credit to the Lobos for being fired up.  At the same time, the Broncos played with the fire in bellies.

I just hope we can beat the Lobos in Basketball this season.

That was a great game and thank goodness for Jay Ajayi biggrin Love what Coach Davie is doing down there. The triple option is always scary to play against.

This is going to be a real test for Caragher in his 2nd year and starting a new QB. As a Spartan I am ever hopeful, but I think we are still transitioning, and I'm not yet sold that Caragher will make it at the FBS level. But assuming he does work out then I am looking for 5 wins this year.

North Dakota must be a win, or else the vultures will start swarming the very first day. UNLV and Hawaii at home have to be wins. That gets to three. Minnesota in the past might have been winnable, but that program is a legit 7+ win B1G program. Long shot at best. The best chances beyond that are probably Navy on the road, and somehow ambushing Colorado State at home. Road games against SDSU, Fresno State, and especially Utah State are tall orders. The CSU foes offer a better chance since the players tend to be more emotional (both sides) when they meet, making the games a bit less predictable.

If it's a typical season then one of the "have to win" games is a loss and one of the longer shots (probably one of the CSU teams) we'll pull an upset. While I'm hopeful for 5 wins, if the QB situation isn't good that could fall to only 2 or 3. The jury is out on the staff and this team. I hope things click and we top my 5 win hope.

BTW, SJSU and Fresno State need to get the MWC to fix the schedule. We both should host one CSU a year, which means we have to swap our home years from odd to even with Fresno (yeah it means back to back trips to Fresno for us, but it needs to be done). Both schools need a CSU home game to help rivalry turnout. To work either UNLV or Nevada would have to swap the years they host us - I don't think either Fresno State or we Spartans care which. (There are a lot of schedule problems in the MWC, see Steve Fisher complaining about the stupidity of the way Basketball is handled: Fisher's valid complaint and then the partial fix.)

MWC Commissioner is about borderline idiot when it comes to scheduling. Either that or he lets his personal emotions influence scheduling. I get the impression there are MWC teams he favors and MWC teams he wants to punish.  ....probably I am just paranoid about it, but it just seems to be the case.

Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

I think they may be loading schedules to be brutal or cake walks on alternating years. That might give the conference more chances to field an undefeated team in the years where that team gets their tough opponents all at home.

The way I look at is that Boise lost to SDSU and Fresno last year.   Turnovers were the difference in both games.
So...we need some payback......biggrin

Lol, Up until now about the only plus the bulldogs have got out of going to "The Blue" is a side-trip to Cabela's and a pair of warm socks.  .....but as it has been said for eons, "this year is different". ...actually better productive time spent waiting for the 2nd coming of Christ.

Re: Evaluate your school's football schedule

No, I work with a youth league that schedules 350 teams for a 9 game schedule. It's borderline incompetence, and a refusal to hire somebody competent to handle that job - it's seen as a chore, not as high priority opportunity. The ACC is another conference, at a higher level, where the same kind of complaints are issued every year, about not taking input and scheduling without paying attention to needs of members, and where as a result favoritism is charged. But I seriously doubt the favoritism, as it looks more like a case of incompetence.

I do wonder if SJSU or Fresno AD's were even aware of the problem of not playing a CSU at home every year. I have not heard peep from either one, even though its plainly obvious to fans of both schools.

I would set it up so that we play Fresno and Las Vegas at home one year, and Reno and San Diego the next year so that we play at home and on the road a team within short driving distance every year.
