NMSU OOC Men's Hoop Schedule

According to Jason Groves, the Las Cruces Sun News basketball beat writer, the Aggie's out of conference schedule looks like this:

@ Wichita State 11/4
@ St. Mary's (mid-Nov)
@ UTEP 11/22
@ Wyoming 11/29
@ UNM 12/3
UTEP 12/6
@ Oral Roberts 12/13
@ Baylor 12/17
UNM 12/20
Colorado State 12/27
UC Irvine 1/3

Solid.

I like the Shockers, St. Mary's, and Baylor especially.

If testing by fire helps, this should do it.

No Alcorn St or WNMU? Impressive.

Re: NMSU OOC Men's Hoop Schedule

Except Irvine that is one very serious schedule.

I think NMSU realizes they have to schedule a killer OOC if they want to recruit and compete. Those road games are something else - no excuses, that may be one of the toughest in the nation. Hum, I'll have to hit up my friend who's son goes to SMC for tickets to that game.

A 27 game sleight? I wouldn't be surprised if there is a home game or 2 against weak competition that is not on this list.

Supposedly, Irvine wanted a matchup between their 7'6" center and the now departed 7'5" Sim Buhllar.

We'll have to settle for 7'6" versus little brother, 7'3" Tanveer Buhllar.

Suggestions of a name for the matchup?

I'm sure there will be the usual exhibition game and perhaps an early opening home opener against less formidable opposition.

That's not true. We are still recruiting at a high level. Just look at our 2014 recruiting class.

Re: NMSU OOC Men's Hoop Schedule

NMSU is addressing its need to improve its RPI.  Strength of schedule---especially if the Aggies can claim some wins---is important in NCAA seeding (providing, of course, that NMSU can win the WAC Tournament).   The WAC last year was #24 in RPI out of 36 conferences.  NMSU had the highest RPI in the WAC and was ranked #75.  The next highest WAC team was Utah Valley at #193.  Texas Pan Am was #302.

It appears 25 games are confirmed at this point; the 11 OOC games listed above and 14 WAC games. So, with 7 of these OOC 11 games on the road, I am sure NMSU will still throw in a few cupcakes on their home schedule. It is difficult for NMSU to get good high profile opponents to come to Las Cruces. The probability of a loss is too great for teams venturing into the Pan American Center. NMSU usually plays between 30 and 32 regular season games each year . So, don't be surprised if NMSU beefs up their schedule even further by adding an early season holiday tournament.

Now THAT is a solid non-con for the RPI......before it takes hopefully not so far dip when the WAC schedule hits...now how many do actually think you're going to win....I say.....(don't hate just guessing)....4......(UTEP twice, ORU, and UCI)

Sagarin rankings is not RPI, WAC had 3 top 200 RPI teams;
NMSU 71
UVU 142
GCU 191

Hey Wisp.  Any new exciting recruits or any new recruits for next season for Utah Valley?

Good question. I have been trying to find out what's up with our basketball team, and right now information is not flowing. The coach won't release the schedule until everything is done. As long as there are contracts yet to be completed, the schedule won't get released. Hard to say why he does that - maybe he got burned once or twice having pairings announced and then needing to alter the schedule after something fell through. I know we play Arizona in our OOC schedule because the U of A announced it.

No news on recruits right now either.

Thanks Verine.  Looks like Utah Valley is also on Weber State's released schedule.  I imagine you will also be playing Utah State  On another note for other WAC teams, Grand Canyon has sweet OOC conference schedule as well with lot's of home games and a game vs. either Indiana or Kentucky.  I forget which.

BTW Ver and Wisp.  I can't wait until we play you guys.  You guys had a very good turn out for game in Orem and their is some bad blood between the teams due to the infamous brawl.  Do you think with winning the regular season WAC and a respectable appearance in the NIT will start filling up your arena?  Are people excited in Orem about Utah Valley's season or are you going to continue to get 1000+ for your games?  Is there a buzz in Orem and surrounding areas about the team or is everybody still just focused on BYU in the area?

Well, I’m looking forward to the year – and I am hoping the numbers grow.

There is something interesting going on in Orem. I am on campus this summer, and although the summer numbers are only a fraction of what they will be come fall, there still seems to be a lot of energy here right now. UVU will open the athletic year with its inaugural men’s soccer season. I know soccer is not a huge draw in most WAC schools, but there is a feeling that it’s going to be a big deal in Utah County. The World Cup summer has generated some interest in the sport and Real Salt Lake is having a good, if not spectacular, year. (It helps that Beckerman and Rimando from RSL were both in Brazil with team USA.) RSL will sell out every remaining home game through the rest of the MLS season.

Regionally, soccer has become an important sport. Indicative of the interest is what happened last fall with BYU and the U of U playing football in Provo. Around here, most would say this is THE GAME of the year. But, with a sold out stadium, and the football game broadcast locally on TV, the RSL game (same day, and exact same kickoff time) was also played in front of a standing-room-only crowd – if there were ever going to be a few thousand empty seats at an RSL match, it would have happened that day.

Nobody else in Utah has a men’s soccer team, and the UVU soccer coaches have been very public-oriented as they have recruited and begun to build the team in preparation for this season. There are billboards all up and down I-15 advertising the season opening, there were UVU soccer commercials aired all through World Cup, and a press release locally talking about the premiere UVU home match against UMass being broadcast nationally. I think there will be another advertising blitz through August (local sports radio, TV news sports interviews with coaches and maybe players – also I’ve heard the broadcast team that does the RSL matches on TV is coming to do one of UVU's first home games).

I do not know the numbers, but have heard that with the soccer season still four weeks away UVU has already sold more season soccer tickets than it has ever sold for basketball.

Just my opinion, but if the men’s soccer season turns out to be big, I think it will kindle interest in everything that follows. The more soccer crazy the town and the university become, the more the basketball team will benefit. If basketball can open the season well there might be much more interest and higher attendance. (Did we finish 3rd in WAC attendance last year, behind NMSU, and GCU?)

Since this post is already long, I’ll add that what this conference needs is an NCAA Basketball Tournament win from its conference tournament champion. We will be better as a conference this year than we were last year despite Idaho’s departure, so we’ll have to see what unfolds. NMSU looks very solid – I hope UVU can repeat some of last-year’s magic and improve RPI and its overall record. I presume the second meeting of the two schools will be in Las Cruces this season. Here’s hoping it’s a game with meaning. It would be exceptionally fun to see UVU and NMSU playing near the end of the season for the regular season crown again.

NMSU's game @ St. Mary's will be part of ESPN's Tip off marathon. 2nd year in a row NMSU has been apart of it. Game will be November 18th.

Nice that it's on national TV.....not so nice is that it starts at midnight on the West Coast, 1 a.m. in New Mexico.   Mid-major must make these sacrifices for exposure, albeit when few are watching.  But, there's always the highlights on SportsCenter.

At least you get to be on ESPN. I'm hoping one day the Redhawks will get to be a part of this.
